Book excerpt: After his wife's death, reporter Jeremy Michaels concentrates on writing news stories that try to bring justice to the underdogs of the world, until an announcement by Buckingham Palace shatters his glass cocoon. The village hermit from the hometown Jeremy fled is to be knighted for still-classified services during World War II, a man Jeremy knows well from a certain childhood adventure. The editor of the newspaper Jeremy writes for sends him back home to find out why, but he is scooped by the hometown paper's revelation that the man worked inside the French Resistance. Yet the knighthood is refused, and Jeremy's chance to save his job—and an old friendship—lies in discovering the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is natural theology compatible with presuppositional apologetics? At first glance, it may seem like it's not. Natural theology is closely linked to classical apologetics, and classical apologetics, due to the influence of Thomas Aquinas, is so interwoven with Greek philosophy. And Greek philosophy has no place in presuppositionalism. Yet, a natural theology free of the influence of Greek philosophy is consistent with presuppositionalism. Presuppositionalists do not take issue with natural revelation or with the body of doctrine communicated in natural revelation; they are against pagan philosophers who have suppressed, twisted, and perverted what has been communicated in natural revelation. Greek philosophers did not confess the God of natural revelation. Far from it. They rejected what they knew in their hearts by attempting to formulate their own explanation of God. The god they created was an abstract being that is not the personal Caretaker and Judge of the universe. Such a god is not the God of natural revelation.Thomas Aquinas is the one who ruined natural theology. Not that Thomas was the first to mix Greek philosophy with theology, but he has done the most damage in syncretizing the pantheistic notions flowing out of Athens with the ontologically distinct and self-contained God who personally revealed himself in Jerusalem. Therefore, if natural theology can be saved, it must be saved from Thomas Aquinas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A book in the best tradition of popular history—the untold story of Ireland's role in maintaining Western culture while the Dark Ages settled on Europe. • The perfect St. Patrick's Day gift! Every year millions of Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but they may not be aware of how great an influence St. Patrick was on the subsequent history of civilization. Not only did he bring Christianity to Ireland, he instilled a sense of literacy and learning that would create the conditions that allowed Ireland to become "the isle of saints and scholars"—and thus preserve Western culture while Europe was being overrun by barbarians. In this entertaining and compelling narrative, Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Europe evolved from the classical age of Rome to the medieval era. Without Ireland, the transition could not have taken place. Not only did Irish monks and scribes maintain the very record of Western civilization -- copying manuscripts of Greek and Latin writers, both pagan and Christian, while libraries and learning on the continent were forever lost—they brought their uniquely Irish world-view to the task. As Cahill delightfully illustrates, so much of the liveliness we associate with medieval culture has its roots in Ireland. When the seeds of culture were replanted on the European continent, it was from Ireland that they were germinated. In the tradition of Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, How The Irish Saved Civilization reconstructs an era that few know about but which is central to understanding our past and our cultural heritage. But it conveys its knowledge with a winking wit that aptly captures the sensibility of the unsung Irish who relaunched civilization.

Book excerpt: A 2020 IAN BOOK OF THE YEAR FINALIST. Bree Thomas is the lone survivor of an explosion that killed her parents in Thailand years ago. A few weeks away from high school graduation, Bree discovers that the aunt she's been living with in America is no relation at all and wants her out of the house-like now-leaving her college ambitions in ruins. When a strange foundation offers Bree a free college education once she completes a two-year altruistic apprenticeship abroad, she must accept without knowing the whole story to avoid homelessness and a bleak future. But when the charitable foundation gig turns out to be military-style training at an isolated jungle camp in Thailand, Bree realizes she's been recruited to deliver exploited men, women and children from backwater hellholes to the sanctuary of New Lingyang, an unpopulated walled city in China. Bree becomes enamored with saving the downtrodden masses until discovering that behind the philanthropic facade of New Lingyang lies a shocking truth that makes her complicit in a horrific atrocity inflicted on the people she delivered there. Now, with time running out, Bree must take on a global conspiracy to save the people she put in harm's way and for the sake of saving Karma... "If Mitch Rapp or Jack Reacher ever had a daughter, it would be Bree Thomas." " Bree Thomas is the female James Bond. Like Thai food-she's SWEET, SOUR and SPICY." "An original thrill-ride through Asia that leaves you hanging on like a petrified bat."

Book excerpt: A noted cultural critic unearths the weird, the eerie, and the horrific in 20th-century culture through a wide range of literature, film, and music references—from H.P. Lovecraft and Daphne Du Maurier to Stanley Kubrick and Christopher Nolan. What exactly are the Weird and the Eerie? Two closely related but distinct modes, and each possesses its own distinct properties. Both have often been associated with Horror, but this genre alone does not fully encapsulate the pull of the outside and the unknown. In several essays, Mark Fisher argues that a proper understanding of the human condition requires examination of transitory concepts such as the Weird and the Eerie. Featuring discussion of the works of: H. P. Lovecraft, H. G. Wells, M.R. James, Christopher Priest, Joan Lindsay, Nigel Kneale, Daphne Du Maurier, Alan Garner and Margaret Atwood, and films by Stanley Kubrick, Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan.

Book excerpt: This is a fun and interesting book to read. Mrs. Swinton covered the typical events in a biography, from Thomas S. Monson's ancestry through his childhood and then into his life as a general authority. However, the life she followed is so remarkable that the book was hard to put down. It is filled with uncountable stories, some short, some lengthy, that give the reader faith and hope. A choice line reveals that immediately after Thomas S. Monson's call to the apostleship, he went home and mowed the lawn. A majestic chapter deals with Elder Monson's years of service with the East Germans. A progressive thread is the passing of senior apostles, interlaced with the fact that Tom Monson was seventeen years younger than the next junior apostle, Gordon B. Hinckley. Many details in the book reveal that Thomas S. Monson was a humble man, led by the Lord to perform acts of greatness, and yet his favorite breakfast is Wheaties. Elder Monson served in the highest councils of the LDS Church for thirty-six years, gaining tremendous experience and perspective, before being sustained as president.
