Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A candid and moving memoir of how one woman’s pregnancy forced her to confront her definition of how to live a successful life “Slyly ironic, frequently hilarious, [Martha] Beck’s memoir charts the journey from being smart to becoming wise.”—Time This edition includes a new afterword about Adam. From the moment Martha and her husband, John, accidentally conceived their second child, all hell broke loose. They were a couple obsessed with success. After years of matching IQs and test scores with less driven peers, they had two Harvard degrees apiece and were gunning for more. They’d plotted out a future in the most vaunted ivory tower of academe. But when their unborn son, Adam, was diagnosed with Down syndrome, doctors, advisers, and friends in the Harvard community warned them that if they decided to keep the baby, they would lose all hope of achieving their carefully crafted goals. Fortunately, that’s exactly what happened. By the time Adam was born, Martha and John were propelled into a world in which they were forced to redefine everything of value to them, put all their faith in miracles, and trust that they could fly without a net. And it worked. Expecting Adam captures the abject terror and exhilarating freedom of facing impending parenthood, being forced to question one’s deepest beliefs, and rewriting life’s rules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unlikely story of how Americans canonized Adam Smith as the patron saint of free markets Originally published in 1776, Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations was lauded by America’s founders as a landmark work of Enlightenment thinking about national wealth, statecraft, and moral virtue. Today, Smith is one of the most influential icons of economic thought in America. Glory Liu traces how generations of Americans have read, reinterpreted, and weaponized Smith’s ideas, revealing how his popular image as a champion of American-style capitalism and free markets is a historical invention. Drawing on a trove of illuminating archival materials, Liu tells the story of how an unassuming Scottish philosopher captured the American imagination and played a leading role in shaping American economic and political ideas. She shows how Smith became known as the father of political economy in the nineteenth century and was firmly associated with free trade, and how, in the aftermath of the Great Depression, the Chicago School of Economics transformed him into the preeminent theorist of self-interest and the miracle of free markets. Liu explores how a new generation of political theorists and public intellectuals has sought to recover Smith’s original intentions and restore his reputation as a moral philosopher. Charting the enduring fascination that this humble philosopher from Scotland has held for American readers over more than two centuries, Adam Smith’s America shows how Smith continues to be a vehicle for articulating perennial moral and political anxieties about modern capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Holy Scripture, words mean things! Why is the "place of the skull" so important when three of the four Gospels mention Golgotha? Inquiring minds long before ago answered that question! It may not be because the rock formation resembles a skull. It may have deeper meaning. Perhaps as some church fathers believed, Adam is buried on Calvary. In this book, that contention is explored. Did Adam lose his significance at his death, or is there a link throughout the Scripture? That may never be known, but the thought is intriguing. This is a work of fiction, but in the stories of biblical characters, there seems to be much more implied than said. John made that clear when he wrote his Gospel. Since Jesus was here in the beginning, where was he? He was always there! He still is always with us! The skull of Adam is used herein to present essential doctrines in a casual conversational manner. It is all about the mystery of God. The mystery revealed is that in all times, the Scripture is all about Jesus. What is said in these conversations explain the words of Jesus before he was ever born.

Book excerpt: Featuring insightful, actionable and proven cost-saving ideas, How To Save Big On Workers' Compensation shows how employers can maximize productivity and profits through safety and a culture of caring. This essential guide shares strategies that saved a quarter of a billion dollars. This easy-to-read book includes exclusive interviews with leading industry experts. The experts include Larry LaPointe, former director of the Division of Confidential Investigations at the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF); Ed Hiller, director of Claims and Medical Operations for NYSIF; Brian Mittman, the managing partner of Markhoff & Mittman, a law firm helping injured workers; Robert Firmbach, a veteran loss-control and safety expert; Eileen Preiato, the Friedlander Claims Solution manager; and Cosmo Preiato, executive vice president of Friedlander Group and leader of Safety Group Underwriting and Operations. "Friedlander's approach in this well-written, helpful book is to focus on what employers can do to minimize workers' compensation claims in the first place. He believes that by creating a "culture of caring," employers can effectively save money on workers' compensation, because "that culture will maximize your productivity, efficiencies, and profits." ...This revelation alone makes the book valuable, along with several eye-opening interviews with workers' compensation experts. Employers will gain insight into such key issues as claims and premium fraud, abuse of the system, loss control and reducing the cost of claims. A thoughtful book that could actually save employers some serious money." Kirkus Review "During my time as CEO of the New York State Insurance Fund, Adam always displayed a keen insight into the intricate workings of the state compensation system. He is a true comp professional who understands the needs of the system's stakeholders; policyholders, associations, injured workers and policy makers. His primer is a must read for those involved in our industry. Ken Ross, CEO/President, Pinnacol Assurance "How to Save Big on Workers' Compensation is interesting, informative and a must read book. Adam uses his vast knowledge, candid insights including interviews with true experts in workers' compensation to discuss issues related to fraud, claims, safety and loss control. The book focuses on safety prevention as a major linchpin of effective cost control resulting in lowering premium costs. The reader should benefit from this unique review of important issues." Donald T. DeCarlo, J.D. CEO AMCOMP, Commissioner of NYS Insurance Fund, 1997-2009 "Adam offers a number of key concepts - such as managment-employee relations and a culture of caring - that are very straight forward and really work to control workers' compensation costs. His interviews with industry experts deliver the information in an easy-to-understand, real-world style. This is a great book for virtually every American business." Dennis Otmaskin, CPCU Regional President, Northeast & Mid-Atlantic Harleysville Group "I found it to be a riveting book, presented in a manner that every employer would clearly enjoy reading and would cut the cost to his bottom line. This should be considered a training manual. This is also a worthwhile book for every Insurance Broker to read and present to every business client. It presents a powerful bit of knowledge." Arthur Natter, former broker and NYSIF retiree "Adam's a serious professional and a clear-headed writer." Steve Acunto, Editor & Publisher of Insurance Advocate "I had an opportunity to read "How to $ave Big on Workers' Compensation." It is exceptional! Book excerpt: Universally acknowledged as the father of capitalism, the eighteenth-century Scottish thinker Adam Smith is best known for his “invisible hand” theory. This theory argued in favor of setting individuals free to pursue their self-interests for the good of all and has helped to make Smith's name synonymous with unfettered free market capitalism. In this book, Jonathan Conlin rescues Smith from the straight-jacket of economics, reattaching the “invisible hand” to Smith’s philosophy of ethics. As Conlin shows, Smith rooted our instincts to trade in human psychology. Analyzing the contrasts he saw between the industrializing Scottish lowlands and the clan-based pastoralism of the Scottish highlands—as well as the contrasts between the ideas of contemporary thinkers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and David Hume—Smith advanced a system of ethics founded on sympathy. Weaving together Smith’s life and ideas, Conlin shows how the latter anticipated much more recent developments surrounding behavioral economics, virtue ethics, and social inequality. Ultimately, Conlin argues, Adam Smith offers us a set of tools to face today's challenges and become better and happier human beings.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller that examines how people can champion new ideas in their careers and everyday life—and how leaders can fight groupthink, from the author of Think Again and co-author of Option B “Filled with fresh insights on a broad array of topics that are important to our personal and professional lives.”—The New York Times DealBook “Originals is one of the most important and captivating books I have ever read, full of surprising and powerful ideas. It will not only change the way you see the world; it might just change the way you live your life. And it could very well inspire you to change your world.” —Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of Lean In With Give and Take, Adam Grant not only introduced a landmark new paradigm for success but also established himself as one of his generation’s most compelling and provocative thought leaders. In Originals he again addresses the challenge of improving the world, but now from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all? Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports, and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act, and manage fear and doubt; how parents and teachers can nurture originality in children; and how leaders can build cultures that welcome dissent. Learn from an entrepreneur who pitches his start-ups by highlighting the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who overturned the rule of secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees for failing to criticize him, and a TV executive who didn’t even work in comedy but saved Seinfeld from the cutting-room floor. The payoff is a set of groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and improving the status quo.

Book excerpt: About the Book Adam St. James is back, this time in a thriller with his old friend from high school, April Mayes, and new friends helping him unwind a disaster of cosmic proportions. The story opens in the timeline of the Cryptid Trilogy. The Cryptid saga is over, and Adam is weary of the fighting, death and destruction, yet it persists and dogs him relentlessly. More bad news is about to be revealed for which Adam will be blamed, but for which he has no responsibility. A powerful immortal offers Adam, and the family of his choosing, the opportunity to depart Adam’s birth universe for an alternate universe where old struggles and battles do not exist. Catastrophic things are about to unfold over which he has no control. One of his old friends, April Mayes and her parents, do not possess the genetic profile that will allow them to survive the coming catastrophe; Adam chooses to invite them to spare their lives in the alternate universe. The rest of his family and friends will survive the catastrophe, as will an “alt” Adam who remains behind. Adam is warned to be careful about the attributes and items he and his fellow traveler wish to take with them; their wish to leave their home world behind will be granted, but do they understand how any minor tweaks may bend and alter the timeline in their new universe? This novel reimagines old characters in new cosmic circumstances telling a tale of what might happen when mortals mess with the very fabric of reality and existence. Adam, and April Mayes, who is now a famous TV and movie star, make the journey to a new universe together, but with unexpected and unintended altered personalities. What follows is disastrous, and in the end, a journey no one wished to make. How will they change, what are the consequences, and how will this adventure pan out? As usual, where goes Adam St. James also goes murder, intrigue, action and betrayal. Buckle up, readers, the adventure is about to begin!

Adam Smith became famous for The Wealth of Nations, but the Scottish economist also cared deeply about our moral choices and behavior--the subjects of his other brilliant book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). Now, economist Russ Roberts shows why Smith's neglected work might be the greatest self-help book you've never read. Roberts explores Smith's unique and fascinating approach to fundamental questions such as: - What is the deepest source of human satisfaction? - Why do we sometimes swing between selfishness and altruism? - What's the connection between morality and happiness? Drawing on current events, literature, history, and pop culture, Roberts offers an accessible and thought-provoking view of human behavior through the lenses of behavioral economics and philosophy"--

Book excerpt: A GODLY MANS GUIDE TO COVERING THE WOMAN OF GOD FROM A W.O.W.W.W.W WOMANS PERSPECTIVE In view of what has been established in my Trilogy for both males and females, leaders and laymen, this journey continues as a spin-off from: God, Why Didnt He Cover Me? As I have been criticized about the wording of the current book title, I need you to roll with me on this one. As this book has become a personal conversation with my race of people, reader discretion is advised. If it had been intended for Esaus descendents, I would have asked: Hey Adam, Where Art Thou? But since God has expanded my ability to communicate an exclusive message, this book has been deliberately downloaded for the Tribe of Judah. In translating the artistic nature of Heaven onto the earth, I need you to comprehend the words that are coming out of the Fathers mouth. Disclaimer: Just as this intriguing component continues to offer a unique smorgasbord of legitimate inquiries that may not fit the typical readers practical perspective, the project is intentionally informal with jargon-laden language that may not be acceptable by church folks and academic audiences. So if you are the traditional, super-spiritual Christian thats speaking in super-sonic tongues, this book will likely press your religious buttons. Even as the progressive theology may go beyond the capacity of your traditional beliefs, your personal opinions are no indication that God has stopped speaking (see Mt. 4:4). So in viewing the world with an inquisitive eye that may not fit the general patterns, I trust that you will notice that this book treads on prophetic territory. Now that I have pre-warned you of the inevitable, I invite you to explore a very rare assessment of the first and last Adam. Especially rewarding for the reader who values the fact that Adam was the figure of HIM who was to come, my question is: Could it possibly be that Adam was engaged in covering his bride and not preoccupied with hiding his sin? In my opinion, because Eve was the weaker vessel, Adam took the fall and willfully gave up his immortality, in order to become her covering. Why? So that there would be no record on Earth suggesting that the world was in sin because of her transgression. For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners (Rom. 5:19a). Why Adam would demonstrate perfect love and give up immortality for the love of a woman is really the focus of my investigation. Why Jesus would give up immortality and leave the Father to die on an old rugged cross is a large part of the conclusion. Evidently, when God looks at us, He sees Jesus, but when He looked at Eve, He saw Adam. All over the world, Jesus was the Lamb, but Adam, you da man because you took a stand. Brace yourself, as this provocative revelation may likely augment your investment. In my southern colloquial and best Ebonics, allow me to say it like Im feeling it, Hey Adam, where you at? Im gonna need you to take a stand, and be da man! Come on yall, lets get back to Eden!
