Book excerpt: A WARNING FROM AN AUTHORITY: Save Our Freedom is an urgent plea by Bijan Moini, a human rights activist and expert on civil liberties. Freedom is something we take for granted—a fundamental human right we assume will always be there, and that we complain about vocally when we feel it’s being upon. But in reality, the number of countries in which people can live freely is decreasing for the first time in decades. Bijan Moini’s new book is a jarring wake-up call: if we aren’t careful, our freedoms may be stripped away, too, and it might be our own fault. Vividly describing the current landscape of civil liberties in our capitalistic and digital age, Save Our Freedom! explains the immense importance the principle plays in our day-to-day, and outlines concrete actionable measures to fight back.. TIMELY, IMPORTANT, AND URGENT: The voluntary ceding of freedoms is an alarming and highly relevant issue facing our digital world, and one that we are not giving sufficient attention. Save Freedom is a call to action to change our focus before it’s too late.

Book excerpt: The majority of Americans are tired of the radical ideologues intent on surrendering our national sovereignty, and are refusing to accept nationalizing our financial, auto, energy and healthcare industries. And these same Americans are concerned about the massive debt that will be left for their children and grandchildren. Today, the political debate and dialogue is dominated by a radical agenda to change America from what it has been to something very different, something we will not recognize, and something future generations will hardly find appealing. To turn this tide, a majority of Americans must unite and educate others to thwart this agenda. In Save America Now!, Michael Master is asking us to join forces in a common cause to save the America of our Founders. He implores patriotic Americans to be steadfast in proclaiming their resolve to preserve America and to stand together for the principles that have made the United States the greatest, most prosperous and most generous nation in history. Save America Now! offers hope that, by working together against very challenging opponents, the destructive changes that are sweeping across our land can be reversed.

Around the world, millions of people are still menaced by the 'ideologies of evil' that poisoned the last 100 years... Jones and Zmirak expose the flaws in these ideologies, and offer a powerful, persuasive five-point program to reclaim human dignity, protect human rights, limit government, and restore a Culture of Life."--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: "As traditional for-profit news media in the United States declines in economic viability and sheer numbers of outlets and staff, what does and what should the constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press mean? The book examines the current news ecosystem in the U.S. and chronicles historical developments in government involvement in shaping the industry. It argues that initiatives by the government and by private-sector actors are not only permitted but called for as transformations in technology, economics, and communications jeopardize the production and distribution of and trust in news and the very existence of local news reporting. It presents ten proposals for change to help preserve the free press essential to our democratic society"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth is being destroyed, free speech criminalized, the dollar fast becoming worthless. Ideologues at the helm of Big Tech, Big Media, and Big Business are set on the destruction of capitalism and democracy. Powerful federal agencies are no longer protectors of the people, but their primary adversary. Not since the Civil War has our nation been so divided, bringing us to the edge of national suicide. And our enemies—China being chief among them—see our weakness. If we falter, they will act. Not since World War II have we faced an adversary so determined to achieve global dominance. At this moment, they are perfecting an arsenal of weapons to use against us: Quantum computing. Artificial intelligence. Hypersonic missiles. Bio-warfare. These are threats we must defeat. But before we are able to do that, we must protect ourselves from the enemy within. Many of our forefathers had to fight a Great War to save their freedom. It falls upon this generation to fight two. But we must not lose hope. There is a way to save our nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has two currents. The first is an analysis of the three concepts of freedom that are called, respectively, negative, positive, and inner. Negative freedom is defined as an absence of coercion, positive freedom as an ability to rule oneself and others, inner freedom as being oneself; that is, being the author of one’s decisions. Each concept is analyzed both in terms of its development in the history of ideas and in terms of its internal logic. The major problem of negative freedom is to find widely accepted rules according to which this freedom can be distributed. Positive freedom’s major difficulty is to define what constitutes a free person. The greatest dilemma with inner freedom is how to correlate it with the proper interpretation of the human self. The book advances the thesis, and this constitutes the other current of its narrative—that we have been witnessing the advent of a new form of despotism, much of it being the effect of liberalism’s dominant position. Precisely because it took a reductionist position, liberalism has impoverished our view of freedom and, consequently, our notion of human nature with its political, moral, and metaphysical dimensions.

Book excerpt: America is embroiled in ideological conflict, with the opposing partisan bulwarks of the Left and the Right widening a chasm that threatens the unity of our Republic. The tumult in Washington has radiated into our universities, homes, and relationships — from constitutional threats; to the imposition on free speech; to a sprawling, unelected administrative state, America is at a tipping point. Fortunately, Encounter’s Broadside and Intelligence series offer indispensable ammunition for intelligent debate on these critical issues of our time. With a staunch allegiance to the truth, these timely essays resurrect 18th-century pamphleteering to take on everything from the failures of the redistribution of wealth, to the twisting of Title IX, to the dangers of the increasingly unchecked media bias. Saving the Republic, a collection of Encounter interventions, is a necessary resource of critical thought and commonsense on how to safeguard the promise of America. Saving the Republic is edited by Roger Kimball with contributions from Jay Cost, Philip Hamburger, Mollie Ziegler Hemingway, David B. Kopel, Greg Lukianoff, Andrew C. McCarthy, Jared Meyer, James Piereson, Claudia Rosett, Avik Roy, Robert L. Shibley, Michael Walsh, and Kevin D. Williamson. Together these authors make the definitive case for liberty and democratic capitalism at a time when they are under siege from the resurgence of collectivist sentiment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilded Age cities offered extraordinary opportunities to women--but at a price. As clerks, factory hands, and professionals flocked downtown to earn a living, they alarmed social critics and city fathers, who warned that self-supporting women were just steps away from becoming prostitutes. With in-depth research possible only in a mid-sized city, Sharon E. Wood focuses on Davenport, Iowa, to explore the lives of working women and the prostitutes who shared their neighborhoods. The single, self-supporting women who migrated to Davenport in the years following the Civil War saw paid labor as the foundation of citizenship. They took up the tools of public and political life to assert the respectability of paid employment and to confront the demon of prostitution. Wood offers cradle-to-grave portraits of individual girls and women--both prostitutes and "respectable" white workers--seeking to reshape their city and expand women's opportunities. As Wood demonstrates, however, their efforts to rewrite the sexual politics of the streets met powerful resistance at every turn from men defending their political rights and sexual power.
