Book excerpt: This study investigates the effectiveness of educational supervision in improving the performance of Saudi female English language teachers from the teachers’ perspectives. Finding and supporting professional English language teachers and supervisors is one of the greatest obstacles facing Saudi Arabia (Alrabai, 2016; Sywelem & Witte, 2013). In Saudi Arabia and other countries, a lack of skills, training, and resources, such as time, money, and meeting spaces, seems to be a common problem for many supervisors and schools (Badah et al., 2013; Tawfiq & Almajali, 2012). Examining the perceptions of English teachers in Saudi Arabia contributes to a deeper understanding that may help supervisors implement their instructional supervisory skills more effectively. Specifically, research questions include: (1) What are the Saudi female English language teachers’ perceptions of their supervisors regarding: (a) the amount of time spent with their supervisor, and (b) the effectiveness of their supervisors’ skills? And (2) To what extent do Saudi female English language teachers’ perceptions about their supervisors’ effectiveness, and the amount of time spent with their supervisors, predict teachers’ beliefs about their improvement, when controlling for the teachers’ years of experience? I used a quantitative approach with a correlational, predictive research design that involved an online survey of 57 Likert scale questions collecting the perceptions of 130 Saudi female English language teachers from Tabuk, Saudi Arabia about the success of supervision in improving their own performance. The questions cover seven constructs about supervisors’ skills including (a) Communication, (b) Learning Environment, (c) Curriculum and Instruction Preparation, (d) Classroom Teaching, (e) Student Assessment, (f) Supervision and Evaluation, and (g) Professional Development Activities. Using SPSS software, data analysis reveals that about one-half of the teachers generally feel that their supervisors are effective in their work, especially in regard to the learning environment and professional development activities. Also, overall, about 15-20% of teachers disagreed that their supervisors are effective, while about 30% were more neutral in their opinions about their supervisor’s effectiveness. Teachers feel their supervisors are not as effective in supervision and evaluation, especially in regard to the observation process. Multiple regression analysis revealed that both the teachers’ years of experience and the number and minutes of visits from supervisors are not significantly related to teachers’ perceptions of their own improvement. Overall, although about 50% of teachers rated their supervisors as generally effective and skilled in their work, this did not result in teachers reporting being more effective as a result of their supervisors. Further studies to explain why teachers’ perceptions of their own improvement seem unrelated to their perceptions of their supervisors would provide further insight into improving teacher and supervisor relationships and outcomes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine the perceptions of Arabic language student teachers towards the effectiveness of university supervisors, cooperating teachers, and school principals during their practicum teaching in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To collect the data, the researcher employed survey and focus group interviews. The sample of the study consisted of 90 student teachers from Umm Al-Qura University. The findings of the study revealed that on average the majority of the student teachers (male and female) agree that the university supervisors have no effective roles during the teaching practicum. In addition, the results showed that the majority of the participants (male and female) agree that the cooperating teachers have effective roles during the teaching practicum. The findings also showed that on average the majority of the participants (male and female) agree that the school principals have effective roles during the teaching practicum. The results of the quantitative part found different perceptions among the participants based on their gender regarding the effectiveness of the university supervisors. The difference was to the side of the male student teachers. However, the findings of the qualitative part revealed that there were no different perceptions among participants according to their gender toward the effectiveness of the university supervisors. In addition, the results of the study showed that on average there was no difference in perceptions between female and male student teachers toward the effectiveness of the cooperating teacher and the school principals during the teaching practicum. Based on the results of this study, recommendations for practices and future research were presented.

This study aimed to teachers' perspectives on using collaborative tasks in English writing instruction at the Saudi universities. Specifically, the study reported investigates the teachers' approaches to and reasons for integrating collaborative tasks in their English writing instruction, the difficulties they encounter in integrating the tasks, and perceived effects on their students' performance. The target participants for this study were English language lecturers in all the public and private universities in Saudi Arabia. The researcher used a mixed-method research design. The questionnaire was used as the quantitative data source, while semi-structured interview represents the qualitative one in the current research. The participants in the questionnaire were 276 teachers working in different universities in Saudi Arabia, while twelve English language lecturers participated in the interview. The gathered data were analysed by using two different software: SPSS and NVivo. The researcher used SPSS to analyse quantitative data and utilized NVivo software for analyzing qualitative materials. The results of both the quantitative and qualitative analyses showed a positive and effective impact for teaching writing skills collaboratively on the communication skills of the students in the Saudi universities.

Book excerpt: This study has been undertaken using an interpretive methodology in order to examine the socially constructed views of Saudi EFL teachers and their decision-making with regards to the appropriate cultural models for EFL textbooks in Saudi public schools. The study also examines the factors affecting the teachers' views and how they apply their beliefs in their classrooms. In addition, the study will also examine if the Saudi EFL teachers have any concerns about what they have been through and examined and accordingly investigates how they address their pedagogical decision-making in the classroom. Moreover, this study is interested in looking at EFL teachers as local teachers teaching a global language. In view of the exploratory nature of this study and its context-specificity, the naturalistic orientation of interpretive and social constructivism as an epistemological stance were selected. The research design employed a concurrent mixed methods design using an adapted version of Cress well (1996). In this study, the participants were Saudi Arabian EFL teachers from one city in Saudi Arabia teaching in all of the three public education levels (primary, intermediate and secondary). The data collected were both qualitative (interviews and open-ended questionnaires) and quantitative (close-ended questionnaires). For the interviews, 14 male and female teachers equally interviewed, whereas for the questionnaires 280 male and female participated. The data collection of both data qualitative and quantitative occurred at the same time during my field journey in 2009 in Saudi Arabia. I used the SPSS descriptive statistics for the analysing the quantitative data and used exploratory content analysis for the qualitative data. The study findings revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers were not satisfied with the cultural content currently promoted in the Textbooks as they inappropriately contradict the local cultural values. Thus, they believe that for a better cultural content, the textbooks should therefore include a mixture of different cultures that do not mismatch with the local. And as they are controlled by some educational and social factors, they are limited to practice what they think is appropriate to apply in the classroom, therefore, their decision-making in this regards to some extent are to be controlled. In addition, the findings of the current study revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers show their openness to other cultures based on their glocal position as local Saudis teaching a global language. The conclusion of the study has some suggestion and implications to improve the cultural content of the EFL textbooks as well as implications for the EFL teachers in general and their practices and decision-making with regards to the textbook. Furthermore, the study proposed a model for the appropriate EFL textbooks for each educational level and can be applied locally in the Saudi context and globally for other similar context around the world.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of teachers' attitudes and beliefs and how these important factors impact their thought processes and classroom instructional practices. If these beliefs appear to be having a negative impact on teachers' attitudes, it is necessary to help them learn how to teach more effectively (Clark & Peterson, 1986; Richardson, 1996). The main purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of Saudi Arabian K-12 education teachers toward inclusion and to determine whether the professional development programs currently offered in Saudi Arabia change or impact teacher attitudes toward inclusion. The researcher conducted a qualitative study utilizing semi-structured interviews with K-12 education teachers in Saudi Arabia to examine their attitudes and perspectives on inclusion and related assessment/instruction as well as how participation in professional development opportunities may impact or change their attitudes toward inclusion. Six themes emerged from the interviews: (a) different interpretations of inclusion, (b) professional development program, (c) perception of the need for accommodations and modifications, (d) assessment and instruction, (e) parents' impact on teachers' attitudes, and (g) recommendation to improve inclusive practices. Subsequently, 13 sub-themes emerged from the interviews, including: (a) the type of professional development program, (b) the outcomes of the professional development program, (c) the need for instruction and assessment, and (d) the need for professional development on instruction and assessment. Implications for improving inclusion, professional development programs, as well as instruction and assessment are included. Based on the results, several recommendations for practice and future research are suggested.

Book excerpt: Abstract This study focuses on the use of the blended learning approach in the Saudi EFL context, investigating the advantages and disadvantages of its application in Saudi Electronic University, against a more conventional approach used at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. This study also investigates perceptions of students concerning this particular approach. The opinions of instructors are also surveyed in order to identify the challenges and obstacles that they have found in employing it. The study also examines possible differences in performance by comparing five colleges where the approach has been used. For this purpose, 475 students and 12 instructors participated in this study who were studying or working in either SEU or Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University during the first semester of the academic year 1439/1440 from Riyadh female campus. The findings indicated that the students’ results are better using the blended learning approach in their listening performance, also there is a statistically significant difference in the students’ satisfaction in the listening course between the conventional method which is used at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University and the blended learning approach at Saudi Electronic University in favor of blended learning approach at the SEU, and there is a strongly statistically significant difference in students’listening performance between colleges in favour of college of science and theoretical studies. Finally, the study suggests that further research should be conducted on the use BL in teaching other language skills such as, reading, speaking and writing. Book excerpt: "This project is the bi-literacy narrative and autoethnography of a novice English teacher who earned the undergraduate degree in English Language at King Abdulazziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The author offers a brief literacy narrative of her experience learning Arabic in girls' schools on a military base in Tabuk in northern Saudi Arabia and at the university. Through strategic contemplation, she reflects on her mother's illiteracy, which was common for women of her mother's generation, while focusing on her mother's strengths, especially her commitment to educating her six children--all of whom have earned college degrees. In the autoethnography, she traces her growth as a teacher and her interest in applying Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to the education of women in Saudi Arabia, focusing on creating materials that reinforce Islamic values. She offers 11 written artifacts created during her graduate studies as well as three sample lessons she designed in her curriculum seminar and on lesson co-created by her and her thesis chair and internship supervisor. Rather than including just the four traditional macro-skills--reading, writing, speaking, and listening--she adds viewing and visually representing (Tompkins, 2016). In so doing, she refined and expanded basic CLT--sometimes described as a "fuzzy" method by applying the NCTE whole language educational philosophy to her original curriculum based on biographies of women"--Leaf iii.
