Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense Meteorological Satellite measurements of the upwelling radiation in the sounder channels of the 15 micrometer CO2 band have been compared with calculations for a number of clear atmosphere conditions. Great care was used to ensure that complete radiosonde and rocketsonde data coincident in space and time were available. The methods of transmittance and radiance calculations are described and the results compared directly with the satellite measurements. The results indicate a systematic discrepancy in all but one channel. Calculations in general exceeded the measured radiances. (Author).

This book was released on 1993 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A near-real-time sounding of the atmosphere from the surface to less than or equal to 30 km may be obtained by combining atmospheric profiles from meteorological (met) satellite and a ground-based system for remotely sensing wind and temperature. This type of capability is essential for optimum use of Army assets such as artillery and defense against biological and chemical attack. This report describes the method for merging data from satellite and ground-based remote-sensing systems and briefly discusses the algorithms used to evaluate the combined soundings. The current software allows the user to generate output in a standard form or in the format of an artillery met message. Initial results of this merging method are compared with data from nearly coincident rawinsondes. Preliminary comparisons of individual combined and rawinsonde sounding pairs, and individual met message zones for a number of sounding pairs, give an initial insight into the technique and the satellite/ground-based system concept. Combined sounding, Near-real-time sounding, Atmospheric profiles.

Book excerpt: The use of infrasound to monitor the atmosphere has, like infrasound itself, gone largely unheard of through the years. But it has many applications, and it is about time that a book is being devoted to this fascinating subject. Our own involvement with infrasound occurred as graduate students of Prof. William Donn, who had established an infrasound array at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) of Columbia University. It was a natural outgrowth of another major activity at Lamont, using seismic waves to explore the Earth’s interior. Both the atmosphere and the solid Earth feature velocity (seismic or acoustic) gradients in the vertical which act to refract the respective waves. The refraction in turn allows one to calculate the respective background structure in these mediums, indirectly exploring locations that are hard to observe otherwise. Monitoring these signals also allows one to discover various phenomena, both natural and man-made (some of which have military applications).

Book excerpt: Vertical cross-sections of temperature between 60°S and 50°N for Apr. 6, 1973, are derived from (a) radiosonde, (b) Nimbus-5 Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer, Nimbus-E Microwave Spectrometer and Selective Chopper Radiometer, and (c) NOAA-2 Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer (VTPR) data. Comparisons are made of the level temperatures and latitudinal temperature gradients, geopotential heights and the latitudinal gradients, and geostrophic winds inferred from the radiosonde and satellite cross-sections. The results of this limited case study indicate: 1. Temperature accuracies for the lower troposphere obtained with Nimbus-5 sounding data are superior to those achieved with the NOAA-2 VTPR data. 2. The agreement between latitudinal gradients of temperature derived from satellite data and radiosonde observations is much better than the agreement between level temperatures obtained from satellite and radiosonde observations. 3. The geostrophic wind distribution of jet streams derived from satellite data possesses more character and intensity than does the geostrophic wind distribution obtained from radiosonde data.

Book excerpt: Remote Sensing of Atmospheres and Oceans presents the technical proceedings of a workshop on the interpretation of remotely sensed data, held in Williamsburg, Virginia in May 1979. The main topic of the workshop is the interpretation and assessment of measurements acquired in remote sounding of different atmospheric and ocean parameters. The book contains 25 papers that cover the following topics: remote sounding of atmospheric temperature; trace gases; precipitation and aerosols; sea surface temperature; ocean color; and winds. These papers are grouped into eight parts under major topics such as inversion methods, aerosol sounding, remote sounding, gaseous constituent retrievals, and interpretation of results from space. The text is a valuable source of information to students and professionals in the fields of atmospheric physics, applied science, meteorology, and engineering.

Book excerpt: The Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS) experiment on Nimbus 7 yielded temperature-versus-pressure (T(p)) profiles for each radiance scan. The present report describes time series comparisons between LIMS and rocketsonde T(p) values at rocketsonde station locations. Sample size has increased up to 665 by this new approach, leading to better statistics for a T(p) validation. The results indicate no clearly significant bias for LIMS versus Datasonde from 10 kPa at low and mid latitudes. There is a positive LIMS bias of 2 to 3 K in the upper stratosphere at high latitudes for the Northern Hemisphere in both winter and spring. LIMS is progressively colder than Datasonde from 0.4 kPa (about -3 K) to 0.1 kPa (about -9 K) at all latitudes. A similar comparison between LIMS and the more accurate falling sphere measurements reveals an equivalent mid-latitude LIMS bias at 0.4 kPa but a much smaller bias at 0.1 kPa (-4.6 K). Because the biases do not vary noticeably with season, it is concluded that they are not a function of atmospheric state. This result confirms the robustness of the LIMS temperature retrieval technique. Remsberg, Ellis E. and Bhatt, Praful P. and Schmidlin, Francis J.
