Book excerpt: Ongoing increases in global sea level, projected to continue through the 21st century, have widespread impacts on coastal communities and infrastructure. Uncertainties in model projections of Antarctic Ice Sheet mass represent a major contribution to uncertainties in projected sea level rise. Many modelling studies have identified the important role of climate variability in driving ice sheet change; however, there have not been sufficient observational studies on the impact of this variability on the ice sheet. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is vast, and remote; therefore, satellites are the only feasible instruments with which we can measure changes in ice mass. In particular, satellite radar and laser altimeter measurements of changes in ice sheet height are a valuable tool to monitor changes in mass of both grounded ice and floating ice shelves. In this dissertation, we use satellite altimetry together with other ancillary datasets to identify the influences of variability in atmospheric and oceanic conditions on ice sheet mass. We demonstrate of how satellite radar altimetry data can be used to identify the climate drivers ice shelf change during 1994-2016 in the Antarctic Peninsula, a region that has changed rapidly during that period. In the western Antarctic Peninsula, the rates of ocean-driven basal melting exceeded values required to maintain constant mass. Extending this analysis to all Antarctic ice shelves, we find large interannual variability in the total volume flux of freshwater due to basal melting exported into the Southern Ocean, with the highest values occurring during the late 2000s from ice shelves in West Antarctica. Finally, we demonstrate how laser altimetry can be used to monitor large changes in snowfall at seasonal time scales over the grounded portion of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the 2019. The results described in this dissertation together highlight the value of satellite altimetry in observing variability in ice sheet mass at seasonal to interannual time scales. We expect that they will help improve model projections of sea level rise through a better understanding of the processes driving ice sheet change, and by providing improved constraints on the current state of the atmosphere-ice-ocean system.

The range of opportunities for new discovery becomes strikingly clear when we realize that the high latitudes are not one region but are really two vastly di?erent worlds. The high Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and is home to fragile ecosystems and unique modes of human habitation. The Antarctic is a frozen continent without regular human habitation, covered by ice sheets taller than many mountain ranges and surrounded by the Earth’s most forbidding ocean. When we consider global change as applied to the Arctic, we discuss impacts to a region whose surface and lower atmospheric temperatures are near the triple point of water throughout much of the year. The most consistent signatures of climate warming have occurred at northern high latitudes (IPCC, 2001), and the potential impacts of a few degrees increase in surface temperature include a reduction in sea ice extent, a positive feedback to climate warming due to lowering of surface albedo, and changes to surface runo? that might a?ect the Arctic Ocean’s salinity and circulation.

This ice–ocean interaction has profound consequences for the ocean and climate in a number of ways: a change in ocean surface albedo and surface energy balance where there is ice cover compared with open ocean, a change in global sea level when land ice flows into the ocean, and a transformation of water masses through melting or freezing of ice which subsequently influences the global conveyor belt. Another type of ice–ocean interaction, less well understood, is that between marine permafrost at the seafloor and the overlying ocean waters. Collectively, we refer to sea ice, land ice, and marine permafrost as the marine cryosphere. In this chapter, we review current understanding of the interaction of the marine cryosphere with the global ocean and discuss emerging technologies to improve observations and numerical modeling of these interactions. Projections for the state of the marine cryosphere into the current century and beyond are reviewed.

This dissertation investigates how cloud properties and the large-scale atmospheric circulation influence surface heat exchange and melting on West Antarctic ice shelves and ice sheet margins using field measurements, satellite observations, and atmospheric reanalysis data. Surface-based shortwave spectral irradiance measurements and satellite data reveal strong orographic controls on West Antarctic cloud formation and ice-phase microphysics. Orographically-forced updrafts and waves favor rapid conversion of supercooled liquid water into ice, which efficiently attenuates incoming solar near-infrared energy. Frequent intrusions of marine air from the Amundsen Sea anchor a semipermanent cloud band over the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) that continues downstream along the Transantarctic Mountain range. Cloud systems sampled downstream at Ross Island tend to be optically thin and radiatively dominated by ice water. In contrast, direct onshore flows of marine air from the Southern Ocean bring low clouds with enhanced liquid-phase spectral signatures. Radiative transfer calculations using vertically-resolved cloud data indicate that, owing to a dominance of longwave effects, clouds radiatively warm the surface of the WAIS in every month of the year. On annual average, cloud cover is estimated to warm the grounded ice-sheet by 34 Watts per square-meter. Thin low-level liquid-bearing clouds, which favor strong radiative heat input to the snow surface, are common during the summer melt season. Summer atmospheric warming in West Antarctica is favored by blocking activity over the Amundsen Sea and a negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode, which both correlate with El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Extensive melt events on the Ross and Pacific-sector coastal ice shelves are linked to persistent, intense Amundsen Sea anticyclones, which force intrusions of marine air over the ice-sheet. Surface melting is driven by enhanced downwelling longwave radiation from clouds and a warm, moist atmosphere and by downward turbulent mixing of sensible heat by föhn winds. Since the late 1990s, concurrent with accelerating ocean-driven WAIS mass loss, summer surface melt occurrence has increased from the Pine Island and Thwaites Glacier systems to the eastern Ross Ice Shelf, linked to increasing anticyclonic marine influence and regional sea-ice loss.
