He has got half-a-dozen of the more sentimental part of our society to call the neck Dibbleton; but the attempt is not likely to succeed in the long run, as we are not a people much given to altering the language, any more than the customs of our ancestors. Besides, my Dutch ancestors did not purchase from any Dibblee, no such family ever owning the place, that being a bold assumption of the Yankee to make out his case the more readily. Book excerpt: Satanstoe is a 1845 novel by the early American novelist James Fenimore Cooper. The novel is the first of a three novel cycle, followed by The Chainbearer and The Redskins. The novel is a fictional autobiography which explores the 18th century colony of New York. James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 - September 14, 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William on property he owned. Cooper was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and in his later years contributed generously to it. He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Society, but was expelled for misbehavior. Before embarking on his career as a writer he served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War and published in 1821. He also wrote numerous sea stories and his best known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians Cooper's works on the early U.S. Navy have been well received, but they were sometimes criticized by his contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.

Through Cooper's way of mixing fact and fiction, readers are able to get an idea of what life was like for the earliest colonists in the United States. The trilogy is a fictional biography of the Littlepage family which explores the 18th century colony of New York. Novels focus mainly on issues of land ownership and the displacement of American Indians as the United States moves westward. Critical to the trilogy of these novels, is the sense of expansion through the measuring and acquisition of land by civilization. Narratives in these fictional manuscripts reveal a lot about the mentality of the people at that point in history. Satanstoe is the first novel of the trilogy with Mr. Cornelius Littlepage as the main narrator. His writings and descriptions paint the idyllic picture of the life of Dutch colonists. The Chainbearer is the second book in a trilogy, narrated by Mordaunt Littlepage. The title represents the man who carries the chains in measuring the land, helping civilization to grow from the wilderness. Here is described cultural lack of understanding Native Americans had for European concepts of land ownership. The Redskins is the final part of the trilogy with Mr. Hugh Roger Littlepage as narrator. This book closes the series of the Littlepage Manuscripts, which have been given to the world as containing a fair account of the comparative sacrifices of time, money, and labor, made respectively by the landlord and the tenants, on a New York estate. James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life created a unique form of American literature. His best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales.

Book excerpt: In American literature, James Fenimore Cooper is a name that Americans have heard of but can't always place, when compared to the works of individuals like Edgar Allan Poe and Emerson and Thoreau. But every American comes across his work, and today he is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous sea-stories and the historical novels known as the Leatherstocking Tales, featuring frontiersman Natty Bumppo. Perhaps his most famous work is The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece and well known as a movie title.Despite his relative lack of name recognition, he was well regarded in his day. Cooper was admired across the Atlantic by writers such as Honore de Balzac, and composer Franz Schubert, among others. Cooper also wrote several other historical novels and sea tales, including a collection of historical novels that he titled The Littlepage Manuscripts. Included in that collection is Satanstoe, a novel about frontier life.
