Book excerpt: In this heartwarming narrative, a remarkable police dog named Sarge enters the lives of Inspector Horace and his family, quickly earning his stripes as the bravest canine the Force has ever witnessed. Journey through the pages to discover how Sarge melds into his new family and impeccably balances his police duties. Initially, Inspector Horace's wife, Violet, views Sarge with a touch of scepticism, seeing him as a bit of an intruder. Yet, like their teenage daughter Florence, she soon finds herself warming up to the gallant dog. Florence swiftly bonds with Sarge, finding comfort in the thought that he will seamlessly transition between his domestic life and the noble duty of safeguarding her father. As the tale unfolds, readers will find themselves engrossed in the captivating bond between Sarge and Inspector Horace, especially during their vigilant street patrols that prove to be a labyrinth in the shroud of night. The perils of their vocation soon come to light when Sarge leads the charge against a criminal gang, implicated in a spree of designer item thefts. The narrative takes a chilling turn when murder enters the fray, revealing a sinister depth to the gang's operations far beyond what was initially perceived.

Book excerpt: FACTORFICTION is a compilation of eleven short stories. Four of these stories were originally published in separate issues of The Knight Stick, the New Hampshire Police Association's quarterly magazine, in the early 1980's. These On The Lighter Side humorous stories are about automobiles of that period. Most of the remaining stories are based upon factual happenings entwined with imaginative fiction. I included 50th ANNIVERSARY in this book in spite of my editor's comment that it didn't belong in the same volume with the other stories due to its absence of humor.

Book excerpt: My mother told me, on more than one occasion, that I was almost born in an elevator. I do not doubt that statement one iota for my life has been nothing but a series of ups and downs ever since. I really cant sit still. Even my lovely bride of almost four decades hollers at me because I twitch, sometimes violently, when I sleep. Hence the title of this latest work: Owen in Motion. Owen in Motion is Dougs fifth volume of poetry and writings. In this book the reader will be enriched, inspired, encouraged and entertained. At times, the reader will be treated to a poem or tale of spiritual content, only to be followed by a simple poem with a twist of both tongue and mind. Throughout the book are poems and writings about love and loss, marriage and family life, spiritual journeys and living large, which will cause the reader to pause and reflect on both the simple and deep things in life. As was true for his first four books, once you pick it up you will have trouble putting it down.

Book excerpt: The author is a retired police sergeant with twenty five-years experience in all aspects of law enforcement. He has a story to tell which he believes the public will not only find interesting and entertaining, but equally educational, concerning the communities in which they live. His message is contained within the fictitious novels he writes. This is one such story. The story line of Crush centers around the Sarge, who in late 1988, was a sergeant with the local Sheriffs Office in the rural county of Kingston. He was assigned the task of setting up and overseeing an undercover sting operation. The Sarges supervisor directed him to locate a store front in the business community, where the officers assigned to work undercover could conceal their false identities under the premise of a legitimate business. The Sarge was allowed free reins to implement the undercover operation. He summoned the aid of his long time friend and Vietnam war buddy, Zeke. Zeke was an ex-cop, who was currently the aid to the local Congressman. The Sarge and Zeke decided to open a military surplus store as the undercover store front. Together with the assistance of the Congressman, they obtained an unlimited supply of military surplus and opened Wild Willies surplus store. The Sarge was assigned two police officers from his own department to work the operation and personally recruited four other officers, from different departments. All of the officers involved in the undercover endeavor were independent thinkers and veteran police officers. They each believed that they could make a difference in the war against drugs and were dedicated to that very cause. The irony of the situation was the actual fact that each one of them was addicted to a drug. They were all adrenalin junkies. They got off on a natural high of facing life and death situations. These people made the best undercover operatives, but also created a supervising nightmare for the Sarge. The squads mission was to infiltrate the drug community and purchase illegal drugs. Their goal was to develop criminal cases against the drug dealers from the street peddlers through the network up to the major suppliers. The plot thickened as the squad became accepted into the drug community. Personal relationships developed between the members of the squad and the drug dealers which provided complications to the operation. There is a weaving of interpersonal subplots which give the reader a better understanding of the human qualities and feelings of the characters. Action and conflict lurked in the shadows of each drug deal, as the realities of the drug world unfolded before the squads eyes. In the midst of their life and death struggles, the Sarge questioned his own superiors motives. He started to wonder if the Sheriff, himself, had his own hidden agenda, as he found himself at odds with his own boss. The Sheriff claimed the operation was too successful. The number of cases made against the drug dealers was such that it would significantly impact the courts. The Sheriff decided after only six months, the undercover operation which originally was scheduled to run for a years time, had to be closed down immediately. The Sarge argued unsuccessfully his reasons why the operation should have been allowed to continue. After realizing that they had no choice in the matter of closing down Wild Willies surplus store and ending the operation, the squad set up the final drug deals with the major players. The emphasis was on severely impacting the drug trade within the community. The squad was successful in their endeavors, but it was not without paying a costly price. The underlying theme of this story is the real life tribulation and trauma endured by police off

Book excerpt: There are two types of time; Chronos time and Kairos time. Chronos time, as in chronology, is that which we recognize; a man-made measurement of time divided into segments, like those on a clock's face; hours, minutes and seconds. Kairos time is measured in significant life events; they may manifest as being man-made but are not. Kairos time is not divided into segments and can be life-changing. For Petty and Cross, their future Kairos moments became particularly significant, the day they crossed paths with young Lucy Carlos. Sarge's methods of policing are of the old school. When he seeks retribution for victims of crime, many Kairos clocks start ticking. Is he the saviour of society or an instrument of Kairos? Or are there other unseen forces at work? What's really going on? Life is a journey through time and events, (Chronos and Kairos), that we all must travel in order to reach where we are destined. The past shapes the present, the future and ultimately our destiny. This journey begins decades ago when John is a young police officer. As time goes by he becomes known as Sarge, a man disillusioned by society and justice. Subtle clues and plot points are left along the way; remember them. Read between the lines and listen to what is not being said to see - what's really going on.........

As his best friend Sparky says, “Flint’s nothing but the Titanic.” And his mother, a.k.a. the Sarge, says, “Take my advice and stay off the sucker path.” The Sarge milked the system to build an empire of slum housing and group homes. Luther’s just one of the many people trapped in the Sarge’s Evil Empire—but he’s about to bust out. If Luther wins the science fair this year, he’ll be on track for college and a future as America’s best-known and best-loved philosopher. All he’s got to do is beat his arch rival Shayla Patrick, the beautiful daughter of Flint’s finest undertaker—and the love of Luther’s life. Sparky’s escape plans involve a pit bull named Poofy and the world’s scariest rat. Oh, and Luther. Add to the mix Chester X., Luther’s mysterious roommate; Dontay Gaddy, a lawyer whose phone number is 1-800-SUE’M ALL; and Darnell Dixon, the Sarge’s go-to guy who knows how to break all the rules. Bucking the Sarge is a story that only Christopher Paul Curtis could tell. Once again the Newbery Award–winning author of Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 gives us a whole new angle on life and a world full of unforgettable and hilarious characters. Readers will root for Luther and Sparky every step of the way. Praise for The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963: “An exceptional first novel.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred “Ribald humor . . . and a totally believable child’s view of the world will make this book an instant hit.”—School Library Journal, Starred Praise for Bud, Not Buddy: “Curtis has given a fresh, new look to a traditional orphan-finds-a-home story that would be a crackerjack read-aloud.” —School Library Journal, Starred

Book excerpt: Chief Inspector Nigel Cockett could have retired at the age of 55, but like a fool he stayed on for that last promotion that would raise his pension just a little more. Unfortunately, just then a corpse turned up in the holding cell of his own police station. Inspector Manson, his young colleague fresh from police college—the chappy that was supposed to succeed him—seemed to think that he, Nigel, was the culprit. Just because he was the only person who had the key to the lock-up in his possession. “This won’t do at all,” the policeman thought, “I’ve been framed!” So he called his old acquaintance Daisy Hayes on the phone. She was the only real-life sleuth he’d ever met with any talent for solving murders. He begged her to help him prove his innocence: “The only thing I can say for sure is that I didn’t do it!”

Book excerpt: The Call follows the conflict of ideologies between a brother and sister during the turbulent time of the Vietnam War. Tom is a patriot who joins the army to serve his country. His younger sister, Janet, liberated by the sixties, is anti-authoritarian and a soldier of a different sort. She is a socialist and is active in the anti-Vietnam War movement. She uses her position as a journalist on a national newspaper to advance her cause. Their story is told by their young neighbour, Jim, who is drafted and serves with Tom in Vietnam. Jim hears neither the call to arms nor the call of the anti-war movement. He is simply a bystander forced by the draft to play a part in the war. Jim continues his friendship with Janet, despite Tom's warnings. The story follows the growing intensity of the war and the disintegration of the innocence of young combat soldiers. Back home, Janet is fighting against the war. Through Jim, she becomes aware of a tragic shooting of a young Vietnamese boy by one of Tom's men, and she publishes the story, condemning Tom and the war, with terrible consequences. Des Sloman served in Vietnam as a combat soldier, and later worked as a teacher and a lawyer. He now lives near Dungog, Australia. I wished to document those turbulent times of the 1960s, especially the years of the Vietnam War, as I saw them. It's my (personal) perspective of history. I was also driven to write to understand the times in which I have lived.

In the UK, the Conservative, David Geayton is made Minister of Drought while his daughter, Lucy, tries to survive the increasing horrors of the Philippines. In Moscow, Liudmila is part of an environmental organisation that is planning a 'Save the Planet' conference and Charlotte Brand is reporting the corruption of the governors in San Francisco and the Government of America. No one knows they are suffering the effects of a divine unrequited love until a long forgotten pantheon of gods are made to come to earth to hold an election. But who, if anyone, will believe them? Book excerpt: The Ten Things You Can't Say in America struck a chord with eager readers across the country, exposing truths others have been too afraid to address. In his new book, Elder is out to slay entrenched and enmeshed special interest groups, government agencies with the capacity to meddle in Americans' lives and businesses, lawmakers who continue a pattern of outrageous overtaxation, and those who would hamstring this country with good intentions. Showdown demonstrates how the nation would be better, stronger and safer with less gvernment intervention and how individuals would not only cope but thrive without the so-called safety net. Showdown is a call to arms for a truly free society. Elder discusses: - What a Republican-led government means for progress - Where a responsible government would put its citizens' tax dollars - Why racial and sex discrimination are non-issues in the 21st century. Larry Elders straight talk and common-sense solutions spare no one and will inspire his passionate and growing audience.
