Book excerpt: Santa Rosa, A Pictorial History Book III is a continuation of the story of Santa Rosa that I started with the publication of Santa Rosa, A Pictorial History and Santa Rosa, A Pictorial History Book II. This edition has the subtitle, Book III. It has often been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and like many, I share a deep interest in old photographs. I only wish that there were more pictures available to document the very rich history of Santa Rosa and her early inhabitants. In Book III I am also making heavy use of old newspaper articles to document and tell the story of Santa Rosa's past. Much of the information in Book III is from old newspaper articles from the now defunct Santa Rosa News. I also found much information in early Albuquerque newspapers. I have chosen to include, in most cases, a verbatim transcription of the articles that I have used. The language is certainly indicative of the type of journalism that was popular at that time. They have a certain folksy touch and use language that can best be described as "local color." I have learned many interesting, long forgotten stories about Santa Rosa and her rich past. I also learned that the early residents of Santa Rosa had many similar goals in wanting to see their community prosper and grow. They worked hard in their efforts to bring prosperity to the area. A series of vignettes are used to tell different stories about Santa Rosa. Some are even quite whimsical. Others may tell about a tragic event that once occurred. They all help portray Santa Rosa's rich history. In Book III I have also added sections about some of the early pioneers of Santa Rosa. I have included men such as C. H. Stearns, C. E. McGinnis and H. V. B. Smith. All played an important role in the early development of Santa Rosa. I also need to acknowledge the information I have gained from daily conversations at the Santa Rosa Campos Senior Center. Charles Wiley, Joe A. "Alcarito" Martinez and Elauterio "Laute" Lucero have very willingly shared their vast knowledge with me about Santa Rosa's rich and colorful past. To that group I must also add Lorenzo "Tudy" Sanchez, Rudy Sanchez, Johnny Martinez, and David Luna. All of them are regulars at the center and enjoy getting together for friendly chats. Charles Wiley has been especially helpful in sharing his large collection of old photographs from Santa Rosa. His photographs date back to 1901, the year the railroad came into Santa Rosa. Charles, a retired college professor, is the grandson of George H. Smith, Jr., a pioneer Santa Rosa merchant and an early mayor. Laute and Alcario are both former mayors of Santa Rosa. Rudy is a former city councilman and is a community activist. He shares my passion for wanting to save Santa Rosa's history for posterity.
