This book was released on 2018-04-08 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes contemporary accounts *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading "I have stated my case, presented my proofs. As to the relative merits of my claim, and Mr Peary's, place the two records side by side. Compare them. I shall be satisfied with your decision." - Frederick Albert Cook "Whatever the truth is, the situation is as wonderful as the Pole, and whatever they found there, those explorers, they have left there a story as great as a continent." - Lincoln Steffens It is the dreamland of most children in Europe and the Americas, and the mysterious home of the mythical Santa Claus, his devoted wife Mrs. Claus, the reindeer and the many elves who make Christmas toys each year. In many ways, the North Pole is the first geographical location many kids learn, if only because children over the age of 3 can manage to tell any interested adult that Santa Claus lives there. In reality, of course, the North Pole proved to be as elusive for many brave explorers as jolly old Santa has been for children who wait up at night by the chimney. The biggest problem, of course, is the North Pole's unforgiving location, far from sunshine or any sort of natural warmth. Another problem, one that would only became obvious in the 20th Century, was that it is located not on any piece of stable land but in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, usually covered by ever shifting ice floes. Finally, without modern technological advances, it was nearly impossible to tell when one has actually reached the planet's northernmost spot. The controversy truly began on September 1, 1909, when the New York Herald printed a headline that told readers, "The North Pole is Discovered by Doctor Frederick A. Cook." By mid-1909, almost everyone in the polar establishment believed that Frederick Cook was dead, since his expedition had not been seen or heard of for a year. Then, suddenly, the New York Herald broke the news - the indestructible Cook had returned to civilization, and what's more, he had reached the North Pole. The newspapers hailed it as a great American achievement, and overnight Cook found himself a hero and a major celebrity. However, less than a week later, on September 7, 1909, a rival newspaper, the New York Times, published their own version: "Peary Discovers the North Pole After Eight Trials in 23 Years." Who was to be believed? The physical characteristics of the North Pole were known to none, so no viable comparisons could be made, and since the North Pole lay on a shifting continent of ice, its position might be in one place today and another tomorrow. This has led to more than one argument about who actually made it and who did not; as historian E. Myles Standish put it, "Anyone who is acquainted with the facts and has any amount of logical reasoning can not avoid the conclusion that neither Cook, nor Peary, nor Byrd reached the North Pole; and they all knew it." Those sentiments were echoed by Canadian explorer Richard Weber, who asserted, "We came to the conclusion that Peary never got anywhere near the Pole. On the ice, everything looks the same. I'm afraid we'd have been lost without a global positioning system." The Cook and Peary Expeditions: The History and Legacy of the Controversy over Who Reached the North Pole First chronicles the groundbreaking expeditions. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the expeditions like never before.

Book Synopsis North Pole Santa Claus Guide by : John Chilson
Download or read book North Pole Santa Claus Guide written by John Chilson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to help you on your journey to creating YOUR Santa - a Santa who knows how to create a memorable and magical experience for children and their families and a Santa who follows in the footsteps of St. Nicholas, the Gift Giver of Myra. I hope we travel this journey a long way together. You may not agree with me 100% on everything and that is okay. We each must find our own way of portraying Santa Claus. But this guide will show you what I found that works for me and just might help you. Many people think all it takes to be santa claus (with a small s and a small c) is to put on a red suit and a fake beard and say, ho ho ho. They are wrong! I can put on a green operating room outfit, complete with hair cover and shoe covers and a stethoscope but that doesn't make me a doctor and you sure don't want me taking out your appendix. Becoming a GREAT Santa Claus (large S and C) takes time to build up experience and training. Then there is the Performance Liability Insurance, annual back ground checks, good looking suits and more. If you are just beginning to wear the red suit, this school and book will help start you on your journey to developing YOUR Santa Claus. If you have been a Santa Claus for several years or more, this school and book may give you a new idea or two that will help you become a GREATER Santa Claus. So, welcome to the journey. I will be your mentor, guide and friend during this part of your trip. I hope we travel a long way together. If you have questions, you may contact me through my business Facebook page (North Pole Marketing) or email me directly at [email protected]
Book Synopsis The Never Before Found Chronicles of Santa by : Gail Frailey
Download or read book The Never Before Found Chronicles of Santa written by Gail Frailey and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following tales recorded by Mrs. Claus in her Book of Days Journal are stories about Santa's adventures that are not restricted to only the holiday in December. They tell about his part in spreading the Christmas spirit, but they also reveal that he's known to other timelines and places where he performs simple acts of kindness and resolves a surprising assortment of dilemmas. Customarily, Santa's headquarters are in the North Pole, and his mate is Mrs. Claus. His helpers are craftspeople and artisans commonly referred to as "Elves." But Santa doesn't describe such a group of talented, skilled, and willing staff as elves, although they do seem to be magical in meeting the launch deadline every Christmas Eve. In addition, the stories you'll explore make it known that Santa has the best of technical equipment, resources, communications, and support devices available for the sole purpose of keeping his annual operations "spot on." Mrs. Claus obviously recorded much of Santa's narrations, but these few accounts are all that could be restored of her journal. If she kept other such books, they have yet to be found. It is indeed a blessing that what you'll read are just some of the untouched records of Santa's life and good works that have never, ever been disclosed before. You can check your computer for more information about the father of Christmas. Research his origins, history, and folklore; some notably under that of Saint Nicholas, and possibly even relative to the Magi of biblical times. Santa crosses over so many cultures and traditions, so his names include: Claawwss from the animal kingdom, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Pelznickel, Papa Noel, Sunty Clus, No Ojisan, Grandfather Frost, Kerstman, Sinterklaas, Christkindl, Father Frost, Babbo Natale, Pere Noel, The Wonder Worker, and countless others worldwide. For the inner child in all of us, happy journeys! G.F.
