The city, already a vibrant mix of cultures, jolted suddenly into the industrial age when it was inundated with hordes of newcomers from the East. The freshly laid tracks of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway provided easy access to the Wild West and changed the city almost overnight. Learn about the daily lives and surprising adventures of its local inhabitants, including Sisters of Charity challenging the establishment, Buffalo Soldiers pursuing an Apache chief across the desert and Billy the Kid's escape from prison. Author Allen R. Steele recounts these events and more from firsthand accounts of that dynamic year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first two centuries of Santa Fe's history, weary wayfarers were out of luck. Not only did the Spanish authorities enforce a strict travel ban on foreign visitors, but there was also no place to stay in the territorial capital. That all changed in the 1820s. When Mexico gained independence, a flood of traffic cascaded down the Santa Fe Trail, and the Plaza became a hub of hospitality and trade. From the Exchange Hotel to La Fonda, the inn on the corner of San Francisco Street represented one of the most welcome landmarks in the West. Author Allen Steele recounts stories of trailblazing pioneers and the lodging on which their daring depended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Santa Fe The Santa Fe Railroad added an industrial empire to the United States. It has been mainly responsible for the colonizing, development, and permanent occupancy of the greater portion of that vast region included within the present limits of Kansas, Southern Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and much of California. As is perhaps commonly known, the Santa Fe System ranks with the foremost of the transcontinental railroads, which lines have made possible the occupation and the retention of the entire great West. For without the efficient and rapid transportation which these splendid railways have provided, it is hardly conceivable that this Union of States as we know it could exist. Situated at a great distance from the older and more populous regions in the Missouri and Mississippi Valleys, that vast area beyond the Rocky Mountains, as well as the Pacific Coast, would almost inevitably have drifted away from the Union due to the mere force of sectionalism were it not for the tremendous cohesion which our Western railways have exerted. In fact it is not unreasonable to believe that the Pacific Coast might to-day be in the hands of some other power had it not been for the rapid development of American railway transportation. The story of the Santa Fe is fraught with romance, as I trust the subsequent pages of this book will prove. Following the route of the famous old Santa Fe trail, this railroad has pushed steadily onward until to-day it is one of the world's greatest railroad systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like to have fun, this tabloid-like investigation of some of Santa Fe, New Mexico's most extraordinary events is for you. Here are "beyond belief" stories of the present and the days of yore that picture many compelling, serious and humorous events that have woven themselves into Santa Fe's colorful history. Many myths and facts are explored, and many bubbles are burst: Billy The Kid, Russian spies, hauntings, UFOs, the Santa Fe Trail, to name a few. This eccentric Santa Fe guide is full of sensationalism, revulsion, truths, lies and pleasant distractions. Written in a "Noir" fashion, the book mixes humor with hard-boiled memorable moments that could only happen in Santa Fe, The City Different. ALLAN PACHECO is a native Santa Fean who has a B.A. degree and has attended Law School. He has many patents (auto tool) and for years was primarily involved in international manufacturing and trade. Allan's love for Santa Fe knows no bounds. Perhaps it's in his DNA since his ancestors were Spanish Conquistadors who helped found the city.
