Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Luke Gamble is a West Country treasure. Like Dr Doolittle, but real!' MARTIN CLUNES Fresh out of university, vet Luke Gamble joined a mixed practice in Dorset, run by the stern but benevolent Mr Spotswode. He found himself quickly thrust into the real world of veterinary medicine: truculent farmers, out-of-hours-surgery, nasty biting squirrels, operating on frog's eyeballs and some of the harsher facts of farming life, like dealing with a tragic outbreak of foot and mouth. Luke dreams of setting up his own practice, and finding his place in the big wild world. These dreams, however, are never quite as straightforward as they may seem. In the first instalment of his memoir, the young vet not only learns much about his trade, but also learns a lot about himself, along the way developing a group of close friends, both animal and human. The most important of these is Cordelia - the woman of his dreams - and his quest to win her heart is a marathon. Warm-hearted, witty and full of weird and wonderful tales, The Vet is the perfect read for animal lovers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanne Defoe suffered parental violence and bullying at school on a daily basis throughout her childhood, finding comfort only with her pet rabbits: "One of my first memories was of climbing into the rabbit hutch and snuggling down into the straw to sleep... I just stayed there until they found me. I was only two and a half and I was missing for almost two hours." Desperate to escape from her controlling father and ignorant mother, she found herself pregnant at fifteen by a boy who turned out to be a waster who spent all his wages in the pub. This is the story of how Susanne struggled to escape from a life of abuse, cruelty and ignorance to try to gain some self-respect and a decent life for herself and her four daughters.ÿ

Book excerpt: The sun always comes out tomorrow for the shelter animals Bill Berloni rescues—sometimes from death’s door—and then trains to meet the demands of the stage. Berloni was a nineteen-year-old theater apprentice more then three decades ago when he was offered his first big break: find and train a dog to appear in the original production of the Broadway hit Annie. Defying the odds, he rescued a down-on-his-luck dog from a local shelter and, together, they redefined what animal performers could do. Since then Berloni and his trainers have provided animals for hundreds of films, commercials, and television shows as well as live theater, including productions of The Wizard of Oz and Winn-Dixie, all over North America. In this heartwarming book, he tells the true stories of “throw-away” animals who came back to work with some of entertainment’s biggest names, names like Bernadette Peters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mike Nichols, the New York City Ballet, and many more. This updated edition includes an account of Berloni’s search for the newest Sandy to star with everyone’s favorite red-headed orphan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s something about cats. And love. And the Northwest Territories. In this book of short stories, Shirley M. McGrath takes you on a journey to a little known place called Prelude Lake, just north of Yellowknife. There she lived in a magical house called Dragonholm with her husband and a menagerie of cats for ten eventful years. Part memoir, part book of poetry, Cat of the North and Other Tails Tales demonstrates McGrath’s great capacity for storytelling. She invites you to immerse yourself in her life, surrounded by all of her favourite things, and does so with a deft hand at easy humour and a special insight into feline psychology. McGrath speaks to her cats and they speak right back, loud and proud or grouchy and pouty, it all depends on the mood of the day. In the story “Sandy,” McGrath has to manage personality differences between her husband, Sandy, and her cat, Ming. My first term at the University of New Brunswick went well, and I returned to Yellowknife for Christmas. There, I was met with complaints from both Sandy and Ming about each other. “He doesn’t respect me,” sniffed Ming. “He treats me like an ordinary cat.” “She’s so arrogant,” claimed Sandy. “Not the least bit affectionate.” I told them both that they would have to learn to get along together because I was going back to school. Whether the cats’ antics make you laugh or the quirky poems make you smile, there is no doubt what this book is about: love, pure and simple.

The tenth edition of this well-established text has been reviewed and extensively revised, and new diseases added, based on literature published worldwide since 2000. It is directed primarily at students of veterinary medicine and at practicing veterinarians and field workers. It has come to be extensively used as a reference by veterinarians in large and mixed animal practice around the world: it has attained international relevance, recognition and acceptance with several translations. The book is divided into a General Medicine section (15 chapters) which describes clinical examination and the manifestation of disease in organ systems and a Special Medicine section (21 chapters) which describes the specific diseases of the large animal species, their causes, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical and pathological manifestations, treatment, control and prevention, and zoonotic risk. In the General Medicine chapters Dr Peter Constable, an authority in agricultural internal medicine, is a new major author and has reviewed and revised major parts of discussions on systemic disorders and the chapters on diseases of the cardiovascular system, the urinary system, the nervous system, and the chapter on mastitis. Other Chapters in the General Medicine chapters have been revised and the sections on gastrointestinal disease of horses and the chapters on respiratory system and hemopoietic and lymphatic systemes have been totally re-written by Dr Hinchcliff. The specific diseases of large animal species have been updated sine the last edition by all authors but of particular note in this Special Medicine section is the contributions of three new contributing authors. Dr Stan Done, an internationally recognized authority on diseases of pigs, has taken responsibility for the diseases of this species throughout the text, and adds a European input to the text. Dr Gary Osweiler, a well recognised clinical diagnostic toxicologist, has taken the responsibility for the revision of the topics on toxicological diseases and Dr Douglas Colwell, the diseases associated with arthropod parasites. In keeping with current diseases and their importance there is a new chapter on diseases associated with prions. This section has been completely revised and descriptions of many of the diseases of current importance completely re-written. There is a new chapter on diseases associated with prions. Includes important information essential to any large-animal veterinarian, especially those working with horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, or goats. User-friendly format allows the reader to quickly absorb key information. Quick review/synopsis sections for complex diseases make important information easy to find. Features content on major diseases of all countries, including foreign animal and emerging diseases.
