Download or read book Familiar Spirits written by Alison Lurie and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-02-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alison Lurie, one of America's greatest novelists, has written a loving memoir of world-famous poet James Merrill and his longtime partner David Jackson. Drawing on her forty-year friendship with Merrill and Jackson, Lurie reveals the couple's deep involvement with ghosts, gods, and spirits, with whom they communicated through a Ouija board. Among the results of their intense twenty-year preoccupation with the occult is the brilliant book-length poem "The Changing Light at Sandover", which Merrill called his "chronicles of love and loss." Recalling Merrill and Jackson's life together in New York, Athens, and Key West, Familiar Spirits is a poignant memoir infused with great affection and generous amounts of Lurie's signature wit.

Download or read book Racial Folly written by Gordon Briscoe and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Briscoe's grandmother remembered stories about the first white men coming to the Northern Territory. This extraordinary memoir shows us the history of an Aboriginal family who lived under the race laws, practices and policies of Australia in the twentieth century. It tells the story of a people trapped in ideological folly spawned to solve 'the half-caste problem'. It gives life to those generations of Aboriginal people assumed to have no history and whose past labels them only as shadowy figures. Briscoe's enthralling narrative combines his, and his contemporaries, institutional and family life with a high-level career at the heart of the Aboriginal political movement at its most dynamic time. It also documents the road he travelled as a seventeen year old fireman on the South Australia Railways to becoming the first Aboriginal person to achieve a PhD in history.

Book Synopsis America's Game by : Michael MacCambridge
Download or read book America's Game written by Michael MacCambridge and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s difficult to imagine today—when the Super Bowl has virtually become a national holiday and the National Football League is the country’s dominant sports entity—but pro football was once a ramshackle afterthought on the margins of the American sports landscape. In the span of a single generation in postwar America, the game charted an extraordinary rise in popularity, becoming a smartly managed, keenly marketed sports entertainment colossus whose action is ideally suited to television and whose sensibilities perfectly fit the modern age. America’s Game traces pro football’s grand transformation, from the World War II years, when the NFL was fighting for its very existence, to the turbulent 1980s and 1990s, when labor disputes and off-field scandals shook the game to its core, and up to the sport’s present-day preeminence. A thoroughly entertaining account of the entire universe of professional football, from locker room to boardroom, from playing field to press box, this is an essential book for any fan of America’s favorite sport.

Book Synopsis A Thousand Graduates by : Ian Howie-Willis
Download or read book A Thousand Graduates written by Ian Howie-Willis and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University institutions have been a recent innovation in Papua New guinea, a late product of that country's protracted development towards nationhood. Charged with rapidly augmenting an embryonic national bureaucratic-technical elite, they have been eminently successful in fulfilling their brief: since their foundation in the middle and late 1960s they have undertaken ambitious programmes of teaching and research, and have maintained the flow of graduates which helped make Independence possible in 1975. There have been costs, however. The proper role of universities in Papua New Guinea has long been a topic for lively - and sometimes disruptive - contention. The universities are autonomous bodies at the apex of a pyramid of government controlled institutions of tertiary education, the very complexity of which has ensured the persistence of numerous tensions. There have been many individuals and groups with interests in the system to defend, and ambitions to promote. At the same time the universities have been so central to the government's task of nation building that in trying to maximize its investment in them it has habitually sought to bring them, against their will, more closely under its control. Relations within and between the universities, and between them and the government, have consequently often been uneasy, especially in the period following Independence as the country trod an uncertain path into nationhood.
Book Synopsis Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography by : D. Carment
Download or read book Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography written by D. Carment and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of the Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography brings together the entries from the original three volumes, published in 1990, 1992 and 1996. The Dictionary spans the period from the early British and French explorers of the Northern Territory coast to the mid 1990s and aims to provide a broad reflection of life in the Territory rather than focusing on eminent public figures. In some cases this has meant that some subjects are included about whom relatively little is known. Authors come from the widest possible cross-section of the community and there is a considerable range of writing styles. The principal interest of the volume is the Northern Territory. In all cases, the Territory experience of subjects, however eminent they might have been elsewhere, is thus the focal point of entries. This volume is available on CD (ISBN 9780980384697) and in this limited paperback edition.
