Book Synopsis Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration by : J. Patrick Doody
Download or read book Sand Dune Conservation, Management and Restoration written by J. Patrick Doody and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.

Download or read book Aeolian Sand and Sand Dunes written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is more than half a century since the publication of R. A. Bagnold’s classic book The physics of blown sand and desert dunes, and it is a tribute to the quality of Bagnold’s work that many of the fundamental principles which he developed - main valid today. His book continues to be essential reading for any serious s- dent of aeolian processes. However, the past two decades have seen an explosion in the scale of research dealing with aeolian transport processes, sediments, and landforms. Some of this work has been summarized in review papers and edited conference proceedings, but this book provides the rst attempt to review the whole eld of aeolian sand research. Inevitably, it has not been possible to cover all - pects in equal depth, and the balance of included material naturally re ects the - thors’ own interests to a signi cant degree. However, our aim has been to provide as broad a perspective as possible, and to provide an entry point to an extensive mul- disciplinary scienti c literature, some of which has not been given the attention it deserves in earlier textbooks and review papers. Many examples are drawn from existing published work, but the book also makes extensive use of our own research in the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and North America. The book has been written principally for use by advanced undergraduates, po- graduates, and more senior research workers in geomorphology and sedimentology.

Book Synopsis Bird Habitats in Britain by : R. J. Fuller
Download or read book Bird Habitats in Britain written by R. J. Fuller and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes all the main habitat types, the structure and composition of bird communities, and reviews bird sites and their distribution throughout Britain. Rob Fuller's book would not have been possible but for the nationwide cooperative endeavour by amateur and professional ornithologists, naturalists and conservationists which led to the British Trust for Ornithology's Register of Ornithological Sites, sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council. Hitherto, few books have dealt primarily with bird habitats but the subject is of urgent importance now that exploitation of the environment has left few corners of Britain untouched or unthreatened. Even so, the book is much more than timely, it also extends the reader's interest to an area of bird study that has, perhaps, been too little considered. The text is supported by more than 100 diagrams and maps, and over 50 photographs; in addition there are 53 superbly evocative drawings by Donald Watson. For the birdwatcher and all involved with conservation, this is stimulating reading and an essential reference.

Book Synopsis Molluscs in Archaeology by : Michael J. Allen
Download or read book Molluscs in Archaeology written by Michael J. Allen and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of ‘Molluscs in Archaeology’ has not been dealt with collectively for several decades. This new volume in Oxbow’s Studying Scientific Archaeology series addresses many aspects of mollusks in archaeology. It will give the reader an overview of the whole topic; methods of analysis and approaches to interpretation. It aims to be a broad based text book giving readers an insight of how to apply analysis to different present and past landscapes and how to interpret those landscapes. It includes Marine, Freshwater and land snails studies, and examines topics such as diet, economy, climate, environmental and land-use, isotopes and mollusks as artifacts. It aims to provide archaeologists and students with the first port of call giving them a) methods and principles, and b) the potential information mollusks can provide. It concentrates on analysis and interpretation most archaeologists and students can undertake and understand, and to 'review' the 'heavier' science in terms of potential, application and interpretational value.
