Book excerpt: In this report, the types of crimes, the offenders, and the overall disposition of the offenders in Washington, D.C. are analyzed. By Presidential order, a commission was established to make studies, conduct hearings, and compile information on crime in the District of Columbia. Detailed statistics on crime analysis are presented with studies on the serious crimes, frequency, time of occurrence, victim, offender, and other circumstances. A profile of the criminal offender is presented. Major section on the Metropolitan Police Department details its total operation. The court system, sentencing and imprisonment of adults and juveniles is analyzed. Further evaluation is given. Drunkenness offender, pretrial release, mentally ill offender, drug abuse, interrogation, juvenile offender, juvenile delinquency, and the roots of crime are discussed. The appendix contains four studies in the District of Columbia: one on police, one on offenders, one on corrections, and one on delinquency. The first study, a survey of the Metropolitan Police Department, reviews the management, administration, and operations of the department. It examines the traffic, investigation, and youth functions, as well as records management, communications, buildings and equipment, and police community relations. The second study, a description of active juvenile offenders and convicted adult felons in the District of Columbia, characterizes criminals by factors such as family background, location of residence, employment history, and personal data. The third study, the organization and effectiveness of the correctional agencies, discusses the functions and problems of the department of corrections and the parole and probation agencies. The final study analyzes the social environment and delinquency in the District of Columbia.

Book Synopsis Breaking the Brass Ceiling by : Dorothy M. Schulz
Download or read book Breaking the Brass Ceiling written by Dorothy M. Schulz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constituting fewer than 15% of the nation's police officers, women have found it especially difficult to rise through the ranks and achieve higher posts. Here, those few women who have made it to the top—about 1% of the chiefs and sheriffs in American policing—share their stories and describe the challenges they faced as they rose to their positions. Each of the chiefs compted for their offices with other candidates, almost always male. The sheriffs—virtually all elected officials— came under even closer scrutiny. While few in number, these top cops illustrate the emergence of women as more than token leaders of American sheriff and police departments. They are unique groundbreakers who have managed to breach the brass ceiling. Here is the fascinating story of how individual women are setting a pace for other women in one of the most male-dominated public service fields in America, second only behind firefighting in its image as a place where few women have successfully negotiated careers to the top. Who are these women, and how did they earn the top spot? Are they nontraditional women, or women in nontraditional positions? Do they share common characteristics in terms of family backgrounds, race, ethnicity, age, or marital status? To what do they attribute their success in the face of overwhelming obstacles? How can their experiences with education, careers, service, and assignments help other women achieve similar success in this field or in others? Schulz answers these questions as she vividly recounts the paths to the top for these determined and exceptional women.

This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for evidence-based practice to enhance current and future police training and assessment has never been greater. This need focuses on the procedures and findings of research within the field of police work along with the philosophy guiding these research approaches and commentaries on the methods being used. With many future directions for the science of police training and assessment, the focus on new training techniques and technologies for improving performance is of the upmost importance to find the best current, evidence-based practices for policing. In addition to these practices, understanding the practical realities and challenges of implementing cutting-edge procedures is essential in gaining a holistic view on police well-being and performance. Interventions, Training, and Technologies for Improved Police Well-Being and Performance is a critical publication that explores new training methods and technologies. The future of policing is poised to change, making the need for developments in evidence-based practices more important than ever before. New technology and techniques for improving performance and the perception of the police force can guide the policies and practices of law enforcement, trainers and academies, government officials, policymakers, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, to a more effective implementation of training and procedures. Including the perspective of police officers within the publication, this text offers insight into an often neglected viewpoint when creating training and policies. This text is also be beneficial for researchers, academicians, and students interested in the new training techniques, technologies, and interventions for police performance and well-being.

This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police work increases the risk of psychological work-related injuries substantially: As a result of repeated exposure to trauma, police and first responders have more than twice the risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when compared to the general population. We often hear of the impact of PTSD and depression on police officers’ health and overall functioning, including on their work performance. Both PTSD and depression are part of Operational Stress Injuries (OSI), which describe any persistent psychological difficulty that results from operational or service-related duties. Next to depression and PTSD, OSI includes anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, injury and pain, sleep disturbances and other conditions that may interfere with daily functioning. Importantly, factors frequently observed in police officers, such as burnout, moral injury, and compassion fatigue present additional mental health issues, further contribute to the maintenance and exacerbation of their psychological symptomatology, thereby prolonging recovery and contributing to the chronicity of disability, suffering and pain.
