More that just a lavish picture book, though, Samurai Confidential is rich with nuggets of information not normally found in mainstream history books. The book delves into the backgrounds of Japan's most renowned warriors, many of whom served as scholars, musicians, painters and poets when they were not busy on the battlefield. From the Tokugawa shogunate to the final days of Edo, from Kenshin to Ieyasu to Musashi, Samurai Confidential has all of its bushi bases covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of War Information's influence on the portrayal of Japanese-Americans in motion pictures provides an unusual opportunity for a case study of the implementation of a motion picture propaganda policy. OWl 's motion picture program included the production and theatrical distribution of government films and the review before release of feature films produced by the Hollywood studios. The OWl policy on Japanese-Americans is examined to show how it called for three conflicting views. In government films, implementation of the policy became a problem of film technique for government filmmakers. In Hollywood films, the policy was implemented by a special OWl Hollywood Office. The change in that Office's attitude toward the portrayal of Japanese-Americans over the course of the war is detailed through an examination of its film reviews and correspondence. They suggest the emergence of bureaucratic attitudes to deal with the difficult social issues involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One surprising outcome of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 was that, although Russia was humiliatingly defeated, by 1916 Russia and Japan had become allies. This book provides a detailed analysis of how this remarkable turnaround came about. It traces the evolution of relations between the two powers through the conclusion of three public and secret agreements in 1907, 1910, and 1912, and the controversial secret alliance of 1916. The book argues that careful examination of complete records of negotiations from both sides definitively proves the case for Germany, not the United States, as the target of the secret treaty. Based on meticulous examination of documents in both Russian and Japanese foreign policy archives, it charts diplomatic developments, explores how Japanese and Russian thinking evolved, and assesses the wider international impact of the new alliance.

Book excerpt: When Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed shogun of Japan in 1603, the fortunes of a sleepy fishing village called Edo were forever changed. Ieyasu transformed Edo — today known as Tokyo — into the bustling capital of his feudal government. By the end of the century, the town’s population had swollen to nearly 1 million — a number that didn’t even include the cats. And by all accounts, Edo was positively crawling with cats. Edo Cats introduces to that era through a series of enchanting ukiyo-e (woodblock print) illustrations — all drawn from a feline perspective. Travel back in time and discover the fascinating faces, places, tales and tails of Old Tokyo.

A valuable record of major events, it is also the personal story of a man swept along by his times. Reared in the vanished culture of early twentieth-century Japan, war hero Fuchida returned home to become a simple farmer. After a scandalous love affair came his remarkable conversion to Christianity and years of touring the world as an evangelist. His tale is an informative, personal look at the war "from the other side."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's Cultural Code Words is a study of Japanese society through the understanding of the key terms and concepts that define their attitudes and behaviors. Japan's traditional culture is still so powerful that it continues to be the prevailing force in molding and tuning the national character of the Japanese, with the result that they still have two faces—one modern and rational, the other traditional and emotional. The best and fastest way to an understanding of the traditional and emotional side of Japanese attitudes and behavior is through their "business and cultural code words"—key terms that reveal, in depth, their psychology and philosophy. In 234 essays, arranged alphabetically from "Ageashi / Tripping on Your Own Tongue" to "Zenrei / Breaking the Molds of the Past". Long term expatriate and internationally renowned expert on Japan, Boye Lafayette De Mente offers personal insights into the extremes of Japanese behavior and into the dynamics of one of the world's most fascinating societies.

Book excerpt: Tokyo, 1890. Toyo is caught up in the competitive world of boarding school, and must prove himself to make the team in a new sport called besuboru. But he grieves for his uncle, a samurai who sacrificed himself for his beliefs, at a time when most of Japan is eager to shed ancient traditions. It's only when his father decides to teach him the way of the samurai that Toyo grows to better understand his uncle and father. And to his surprise, the warrior training guides him to excel at baseball, a sport his father despises as yet another modern Western menace. Toyo searches desperately for a way to prove there is a place for his family's samurai values in modern Japan. Baseball might just be the answer, but will his father ever accept a Western game that stands for everything he despises?
