However, as with any method of population estimation, there are important assumptions that must be met for estimates to be minimally biased and reasonably precise. Consequently, I investigated effects of various levels of departure from these assumptions via simulation based on results from an example application in Hankin and Reeves (1988) and a spatially clustered population. Coverage of 95% confidence intervals averaged about 5% less than nominal when removal estimates equaled true numbers within sampling units, but averaged 62% - 86% less than nominal when they did not, with the exception where detection probabilities of individuals were>0.85 and constant across sampling units (95% confidence interval coverage = 90%). True total abundances averaged far (20% - 41%) below the lower confidence limit when not included within intervals, which implies large negative bias. Further, average coefficient of variation was about 1.5 times higher when removal estimates did not equal true numbers within sampling units (C{bar V} = 0.27 [SE = 0.0004]) than when they did (C{bar V} = 0.19 [SE = 0.0002]). A potential modification to Hankin and Reeves' approach is to include environmental covariates that affect detection rates of fish into the removal model or other mark-recapture model. A potential alternative is to use snorkeling in combination with line transect sampling to estimate fish densities. Regardless of the method of population estimation, a pilot study should be conducted to validate the enumeration method, which requires a known (or nearly so) population of fish to serve as a benchmark to evaluate bias and precision of population estimates.

Book excerpt: Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean Sea, is known for its marine sport and commercial fisheries, but the freshwater habitats of the island also support a substantial number of fishes, which provide recreational and subsistence fishery values. There are about 80 fish species that inhabit Puerto Rico freshwaters. Of those, there are fewer than 10 native fish species that reside within the rivers, and they are of primary management concern. Management of these stream fish resources would be enhanced by an understanding of gear catchability, a standardized sampling method, and accurate population estimates. My primary objectives for this study were to (1) quantitatively describe gear efficiency and selectivity relationships to estimate stream fish populations in Puerto Rico; (2) evaluate population models among species using electrofishing catch results analyzed with mark-recapture and removal methods to identify the most suitable parameter-estimating model; (3) use these findings to develop a standardized stream fish sampling protocol to be applied island-wide; and (4) develop empirical, hierarchical models that describe relationships between fish catchability and instream habitat and water quality parameters for each native fish species. In my first research component, I compared two fish sampling gear types (electrofishing and seining) and four models for estimating fish population parameters (Petersen mark-recapture and removal estimators of 2â€"4 sampling passes) to provide the quantitative basis for development of a standardized sampling protocol for Puerto Rico stream fish. I found electrofishing more efficient and logistically feasible for collecting fish in these environments. I determined that three- and four-pass removal models were more accurate than the Petersen mark-recapture model or a two-pass removal model, and that accuracy was similar between three- and four-pass removal models. I investigated variations of models that account for assumption viola.

Book excerpt: We reviewed mathematical models that predict standing crop of stream fish (number or biomass per unit area or length of stream) from measurable habitat variables and classified them by the types of independent habitat variables found significant, by mathematical structure, and by model quality. Habitat variables were of three types and were measured on different scales in relation to stream channels: variables of drainage basins were measured on the coarsest scale from topographic maps; channel-morphometry and flow variables were measured in the field along transects perpendicular to flow; and habitat-structure, biological, physical, and chemical variables were measured on the finest scale in the field. We grouped the 99 reviewed models by the types of independent variables found significant during model development: (A) primarily drainage basin (5 models), (8) primarily channel morphometry and flow (16 models), (C) primarily habitat structure, biological, physical, and chemical (25 models), (D) a combination of several types of variables (39 models), and (E) tests of weighted usable area as a habitat model (14 models. Most models were linear or multiple linear regressions, or correlations, but a few were curvilinear functions (exponential or power). Some used multivariate techniques (principal components or factor analysis), and some combined independent variables into one or more indices. We judged model quality based on simple criteria of precision and generality: coefficient of determination, sample size, and degrees of freedom. Most models were based on data sets of fewer than 20 observations and, thus, also had fewer than 20 degrees of freedom. Most models with coefficients of determination of greater than 0.75 had fewer than 20 degrees of freedom, which led us to conclude that relatively precise models often lacked generality. We found that sound statistical procedures were often overlooked or were minimized during development of many models. Frequent problems were too small a sample size, possible bias caused by error in measuring habitat variables, using poor methods for choosing the best model, not testing models, using models based on observational data to predict standing crop, and making unrealistic assumptions about capture probabilities when estimating standing crop. The major biological assumptionthat the fish population was limited by habitat rather than fishing mortality, interspecific competition, or predationusually was not addressed. We found five main ways stream-fish-habitat models are used in fishery management. To be useful for analyzing land management alternatives, models must include variables affected by management and be specific for a homogeneous area of land.
