Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971, this wide-ranging study illuminates many crucial wage and employment issues by examining the operation of local labour markets and by testing labour market theory against the observed behaviour of employers and employees in different labour market environments. It is based on an empirical investigation of engineering plants both in major conurbations and in smaller labour market areas. There is an emphasis on measurement and quantification, which provides a fund of information on such subjects as wage structures, labour turnover, recruitment and mobility, internal labour markets, manpower forecasting, apprentice training and redundancy. The authors outline the weaknesses of applying economic theory to labour market behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1973, The Symmetrical Family combines evidence about the family of the past with information from a sociological survey in the London region and uses both as the basis for a speculative discussion about the future. The argument is that a new style of family life has emerged. Its basis is not equality between husbands and wives but at least something approaching symmetry: increasingly wives work outside the home and husbands inside it. The new family is itself under increasing pressure. Contrary to the popular view, there is yet no sign of a general increase in leisure. In some occupations work is dominant and becoming more so; at the same time the proportions of people in such jobs, though still in the minority, are expanding. The growing demand of wives for paid work outside the home means that in place of two jobs, one for the husband and one for the wife, there will often be four, with both working inside as well as outside the home. How long will people be able to bear the consequent strain? In a final chapter the authors discuss what they think will happen unless people decide quite deliberately, to reduce the pressure upon themselves and their children. This book will be of interest to students of sociology, health, social care, anthropology and public policy.

Book excerpt: Wages and Earnings is a review of statistical sources, both official and non-official, on wages and earnings in Britain. The non-official sources of data relate mostly to salary statistics, while most of the official data are produced by the Department of Employment. Topics covered range from wage rates and salary scales to fringe benefits and labor costs. The concepts of incomes, earnings, wages, and salaries are also explained. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of earnings as well as the concepts of wages and salaries. The next chapter examines three official sources of wage rates: Time Rates of Wages and Hours of Work, Changes in Rates of Wages and Hours of Work, and the Gazette. The reader is then introduced to the official and unofficial statistics on salary scales, as well as salary surveys and official sources of earnings. Fringe benefits, with the associated concept of total remuneration, and employers' labor costs are also discussed, along with historical data on earnings and its components. The final chapter evaluates the various statistical sources of wages and earnings and ends with a few recommendations. This monograph will be a valuable resource for economists and economic policymakers as well as government officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, the consumption of both prescribed and non-prescribed medicines in Britain was increasing. Originally published in 1972, this book takes a look at the medicine takers and the types of medicine they take. It examines the relationship between self-medication and prescription, and describes the frequency and nature of repeat prescribing. The medicines kept in a random sample of households were counted and analysed, and data about the length of time people hoarded medicines is used as a basis for estimating the proportion of prescribed medicines that are wasted. By putting the views and habits of people as patients alongside information from their general practitioners the study illuminates the relationship between patients and doctors. In addition, variations between people in different social classes direct light on the distribution of care and the equity of services at the time

However, it has proved easier to make broad claims that `history matters' than to theorise with any depth about the appropriate role for history in economic analysis. Historical Analysis in Economics considers what history can contribute to the science of economics: how would it matter if `history mattered?'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, a woman's place was never on stormy seas. But actually thousands of dancers, purserettes, doctors, stewardesses, captains and conductresses have taken to the waves on everything from floating palaces to battered windjammers. Their daring story is barely known, even by today's seawomen. From before the 1750s, women fancying an oceangoing life had either to disguise themselves as cabin 'boys' or acquire a co-operative husband with a ship attached. Early pioneers faced superstition and discrimination in the briny 'monasteries'. Today women captain cruise ships as big as towns and work at the highest level in the global maritime industry. This comprehensive exploration looks at the Merchant Navy, comparing it to the Royal Navy in which Wrens only began sailing in 1991. Using interviews and sources never before published, Jo Stanley vividly reveals the incredible journey across time taken by these brave and lively women salts.
