Book excerpt: Investigation of the behavior of Nb in PbCl/sub 2/ showed that the Nb dissolution rate is quite low. Since stirring increases the rate appreciably, it is likely that the initial reaction is diffusion controlled. A subsequent reaction is linear in rate with an activation energy of 23.4 kcal per mole. Incomplete volatilization of dissolved Nb from PbCl/sub 2/ is due to the presence of lower oxidation states of Nb. The addition of Cl to PbCl/sub 2/ increases the rate of dissolution of Nb. The rate is high enough at reasonable temperatures to be practical for fuel dissolution, e.g. 12 mg min/sup -1/ cm/sup -2/ at 550 deg C and 120 mg min/sup -1/ Cl. Volatilization of NbCl/sub 5/ is 99.9% complete at 550 deg C. (auth).

The basic ARCO process was investigated principally as a head-end treatment of zirconium- uranium alloys. The alloy is rapidly dissolved in molten lead chloride at 520 gas-cooled C, and zirconium is simultaneously volatilized as the tetrachloride. Uranium is recovered from the salt matrix by leaching with 8M nitric acid. Leach chloride is regenerated by either dissolution of lead in nitric acid followed by metathesis with hydrochloric acid or by direct chlorination. Several nickel alloys displayed reasonably low corrosion resistance in the lead-lead chloride system. The process promises to be economically competitive with other zirconium fuel processes and at the same time exhibits several advantages, such as rapid but controlled reaction rates, freedom from fluoride ion and recycling gases, appreciably smaller final uranium decontamination equipment, and immediate separation of zirconium as a dry compact waste. Tentative flowsheets for a 5 kg/day uranium plant are presented. Modification to include direct chlorination of fuel in the dissolver vessel is shown to dissolve stainless steel and most other fuel component metals at practical rates. In this case the fused chloride serves as a medium to remove the reaction heat and nonvolatile reaction products. (auth).

Book excerpt: The rapid dissolution of uranium dioxide is described, wherein copper is added to molten lead chloride at 550 deg C. and chlorine is passed through the melt. The integral dissolution of zirconium-clad uranium dioxide fuels is also described. The dissolution rate of uranium dioxide is directly proportional to the concentration of cuprous chloride if an excess of chlorine is used; the value for the rate constant is approximately 100 mg (UO/sub 2/) cm/sup -2/ min/sup -1/ (CuCl molality). The uranium dioxide is converted to water soluble uranyl chloride. The dissolution rate can be controlled by three factors: the copper concentration, the flow rate of chlorine, and the surface area of uranium dioxide. Scoping work indicates that iron chloride may be as effective catalytically as copper chloride for uranium dioxide dissolution in the lead chloride -chlorine system at 550 deg C; thallium chloride is not as effective.
