Book Synopsis Salt and Sediment Dynamics by : Ian Lerche
Download or read book Salt and Sediment Dynamics written by Ian Lerche and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salt and Sediment Dynamics presents a thorough treatment of salt and sediment interactions and the implications of such interactions for sub-salt exploration. The book emphasizes and utilizes recent discoveries on many aspects of salt and sediment interactions, provides the theoretical framework for interpreting the increasing amount of available data on salt and sediments, and develops a self-consistent dynamical evolution model of salt structures and their interaction with surrounding sediments. The model developed in the text consists of an evolving salt structure that influences sediment motion with self-consistent evolution of sediments and salt shape. The resulting stress and strain in the sediments and the thermal focusing effects of the salt are evaluated. The salt and sediments in the model are consistent with observed geometries, a result of having freely adjustable, observation-controlled model parameters. In addition, the book describes case histories in a variety of geological settings, thus explaining aspects of the genesis and development of salt structures, of their impact on sedimentary structural evolution, and of the impact of sediments on salt masses. The techniques developed by the authors expand the current state of knowledge regarding the evolution and dynamics of salt structures and increase the potential for effective sub-salt hydrocarbon exploration.

Book Synopsis Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures by : I. Lerche
Download or read book Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures written by I. Lerche and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures deals with many aspects of the dynamical evolution of salt bodies in sedimentary basins. This book consists of four major sections. Section A deals with salt dynamics and the motion of salt. The impact of a mobile salt mass on the structural development of the overlying formations is considered in Section B, while the development of caprock, which is commonly found overlying salt diapirs, is emphasized in Section C. The last section deliberates the interrelationships between fluid flow, salt dissolution, and heat flow in the vicinity of a salt diapir, including the connections with maturation of source rocks, migration, and trapping of hydrocarbons in salt-related structures. This publication is valuable to professional geoscientists interested in processes involved in salt dynamics.

Book Synopsis Accretion, Sediment Deposition and Suspended Sediment Dynamics in Mugu Lagoon, a Southern California Coastal Estuary by : Jordan Alexander Rosencranz

This book was released on 2012 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical accretion, the aggregation of material on a wetland surface, depends on organic matter accumulation and mineral sedimentation. We measured suspended sediment concentrations by total suspended solids (TSS), sediment deposition and vertical accretion rates in four marsh zones in the central basin of Mugu Lagoon, a salt marsh dominated by Salicornia pacifica. Mean TSS was 21±1 mg l-1 (Mean±SE) between February and May 2012, which is within the middle of the range of other salt marshes. Mean sediment deposition ranged from 0.00 g m-2 day-1 to 1.29 g m-2 day-1, which is in the low end of the range of other salt marshes. No net vertical accretion was observed between August 2011 and May 2012. Our results indicate that for high and high-mid marsh zones, sedimentation was highest adjacent to the creek. Interestingly, organic matter concentration in TSS varied with tide height, but mineral content did not. While more data are needed to confirm whether these trends occur over longer time periods, our study is one of the first to characterize spatial and temporal variation in sediment dynamics for a salt marsh dominated by Salicornia species.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Physics of Cohesive Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment by : Johan C. Winterwerp
Download or read book Introduction to the Physics of Cohesive Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment written by Johan C. Winterwerp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the physical processes of cohesive sediment in the marine environment. It focuses on highly dynamic systems, such as estuaries and coastal seas. Processes on the continental shelf are also discussed and attention is given to the effects of chemistry, biology and gas.The process descriptions are based on hydrodynamic and soil mechanic principles, which integrate at the soil-water interface. This approach is substantiated through a classification scheme of sediment occurrences in which distinction is made between cohesive and granular material. Emphasis is also placed on the important interactions between turbulent flow and cohesive sediment suspensions, and on the impact of flow-induced forces on the stability of the seabed. An overview of literature on cohesive sediment dynamics is presented and a number of new developments are highlighted, in particular in relation to floc formation, settling and sedimentation, consolidation, bed failure and liquefaction and erosion of the bed. Moreover, it presents a summary on methods and techniques to measure the various sediment properties necessary to quantify the various parameters in the physical-mathematical model descriptions. A number of examples and case studies have been included.

Book Synopsis Salt Tectonics, Sediments and Prospectivity by : G. Ian Alsop
Download or read book Salt Tectonics, Sediments and Prospectivity written by G. Ian Alsop and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2012 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely volume, geoscientists from both industry and academia present a contemporary view of salt at a global scale. The studies examine the influence of salt on synkinematic sedimentation, its role in basin evolution and tectonics, and ultimately in hydrocarbon prospectivity. Recent improvements in seismic reflection, acquisition and processing techniques have led to significant advances in the understanding of salt and sediment interactions, both along the flanks of vertical or overturned salt margins, and in subsalt plays such as offshore Brazil. The book is broadly separated into five major themes covering a variety of geographical and process-linked topics. These are: halokinetic sequence stratigraphy, salt in passive margin settings, Central European salt basins, deformation within and adjacent to salt, and salt in contractional settings and salt glaciers.

Book Synopsis Standard Soil Methods for Long-Term Ecological Research by : G. Philip Robertson
Download or read book Standard Soil Methods for Long-Term Ecological Research written by G. Philip Robertson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-28 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standardized methods and measurements are crucial for ecological research, particularly in long-term ecological studies where the projects are by nature collaborative and where it can be difficult to distinguish signs of environmental change from the effects of differing methodologies. This second volume in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Series addresses these issues directly by providing a comprehensive standardized set of protocols for measuring soil properties. The goal of the volume is to facilitate cross-site synthesis and evaluation of ecosystem processes. Chapters cover methods for studying physical and chemical properties of soils, soil biological properties, and soil organisms, and they include work from many leaders in the field. The book is the first broadly based compendium of standardized soil measurement methods and will be an invaluable resource for ecologists, agronomists, and soil scientists.
