As the young man faced it, it claimed him, forcing back his past life, his old habits, his Old haunts, into the realm of myth and moonshine. His old habits! His Old haunts! They hung aloof in his con sciousness, shadow pictures, colourless and re mote. That zestful young life at New Haven, the swift years of it, the fine last day of it, Yale honours upon him, his enthusiasms cutting away into the future, his big shoulders squared, his face set toward great things, the righting of wrongs, grand reforms, the careers of nations. Book excerpt: 'Sally of Missouri' is a romance novel written by Rose Emmett Young. At the start of the story a young man stopped his horse on the crest of the Tigmore Hills, in the Ozark Uplift, and as he raised in his stirrups, looked the country through and through, as though he must see into its very heart. In the brilliant mid-afternoon light the Southwest unrolled below him and around him in a ragged bigness and an unconquered loneliness. As far as the eye could reach tumbled the knobs, the flats, the waste weedy places, the gullies, the rock-pitted sweeps of table-land and the timbered hills of the Uplift. The buffalo grass trembled across the lowlands in long, shaking billows that had all the effect of scared flight. From the base of the Tigmores a line of river bottom stretched westward, and beyond the bottom curved a pale, quiet river. In the distance wraiths of blue smoke falteringly bespoke the presence of people and cabins; on a cleared hill an object that might be horse or dog or man was silhouetted, small and vague; and in the farthest west the hoister of a deserted zinc mine cut up against the sky a little lonely way. The near and dominant things were constantly those tremulous, fleeing billows of grass, the straight strong trees, the sullen rocks, the silent, shivering water.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sally Mrs. Tubbs The atmosphere was charged, so to speak, with such solid satisfaction when Miss Sally Plunkett emerged from the humble dwelling of the justice of the peace as Mrs. Abijah Tubbs, that it seemed the controlling element for the whole countryside. It had been "up and early" to get their work done, with all the neighbours who meant to be present at the virgin attractions of Miss Sally's entry into Justice Spender's office, and it was "get there quick" also with all the small boys and smaller girls who had counted on the show ever since the engagement was announced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sally Bishop: A Romance As it grew later, there might be seen men with lists on their heads, moving about - in the light one moment, lost in the darkness the next. Some of them were pull ing gloves on to their hands, or lighting cigarettes, others would be pinning a bunch of violets into their button-holes, or brushing the shoulders of their coats. These were the ones who had finished for the day. It could always be known when they had taken their de parture. The heads of the clerks would twist towards the interior of the room. You could almost imagine the wistful expression on their faces from the bare out lines of their attitudes as they turned in their chairs. Then, a minute later, the main door of the house would open, the figure of a man emerge; for a moment he would turn his face up to the sky, then the umbrella would go up and he would walk away into the darkness of the street, for one brief moment an individual with an identity; the next, a mere unit in the great herd of human beings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sally Dows and Other Stories What had been in the cool grey Of that summer morning a dewy country lane, marked only by a few waggon tracks that never encroached upon its grassy border, and indented only by the faint footprints of a crossing fox or coon, was now, before high noon, already crushed, beaten down, and trampled out Of all semblance of its former graciousness. The heavy springless jolt Of gun carriage and caisson had cut deeply through the middle track; the hoofs Of crowding cavalry had struck down and Shredded the wayside vines and bushes to bury them under a cloud Of following dust, and the short, plunging double-quick Of infantry had trodden out this hideous ruin into one dusty level chaos. The Dud Avocado follows the romantic and comedic adventures of a young American who heads overseas to conquer Paris in the late 1950s. Edith Wharton and Henry James wrote about the American girl abroad, but it was Elaine Dundy’s Sally Jay Gorce who told us what she was really thinking. Charming, sexy, and hilarious, The Dud Avocado gained instant cult status when it was first published and it remains a timeless portrait of a woman hell-bent on living. “I had to tell someone how much I enjoyed The Dud Avocado. It made me laugh, scream, and guffaw (which, incidentally, is a great name for a law firm).” –Groucho Marx "[The Dud Avocado] is one of the best novels about growing up fast..." -The Guardian
