Book excerpt: This report, using data from the 1992-93 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty, examines differences among postsecondary faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity. Comparisons were made on several human capital variables (education/experience) and structural variables (academic discipline/institution type), as well as for faculty outcomes (salary/tenure/rank). A multivariate analysis of factors associated with salary was also conducted. The study found differences between male and female faculty members in salary and rank, with female full-time faculty averaging lower salaries than males. Age, education, and experience also differed by gender, with female full-time faculty having lower educational levels and less experience than male faculty. Differences among racial/ethnic groups were also noted: white faculty generally had higher salaries and were more likely to be tenured and to be full professors than black faculty; and Black, non-Hispanic full-time faculty were less likely than white, non-Hispanic faculty to have higher salaries, tenure, and full professorships. Sections include an introduction, which notes prior research on the determinants of faculty salary, tenure, and rank, and methodology; sections examining representation of faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity; a section on the multivariate analysis; and a conclusion. Appended are technical notes, standard error tables, and additional data. (Contains 44 references.) (CH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive encyclopedia on the subject of women in higher education. America's first wave of feminists—Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others—included expanded opportunities for higher education in their Declaration of Sentiments at the first Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in l848. By then, the first American institutions to educate women had been founded, among them, Mt. Holyoke Seminary, in l837. However, not until after the Civil War did most universities admit women—and not for egalitarian purposes. War casualties had caused a drop in enrollment and the states needed teachers. Women students paid tuition, but, as teachers, were paid salaries half that of men. By the late 20th century, there were more female than male students of higher education, but women remained underrepresented at the higher levels of educational leadership and training. This volume covers everything from historical and cultural context and gender theory to women in the curriculum and as faculty and administrators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines a historical review of literature and the reoccurring issue of female faculty being paid less than their male counterparts in assistant, associate, and full faculty ranks and across all academic disciplines. Historical legislation and legal acknowledgements were examined. Literature which focused on human capital and structural/institutional frameworks for faculty gender pay differences was also reviewed. The data in this study is from The National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF), from public four-year institutions which were selected to participate in the survey for the four years the survey was administered (1988, 1993, 1999, and 2004). The relationship of the salary means between gender, the influence of academic field and rank with gender on salary, and an analysis of multiple sets of factors which were influenced by structural and human capital theories were studied. The results indicated gender was a predictor in salary and for the four years in this study, females made significantly less than males. When academic field and rank were included, gender was still a significant factor; however the difference between males and females varied with field categories and rank. The findings support previous research which has also found the gender variable effects salary; however this study found a larger gap between males and females over the four years in the study. Additional administrations of this study and examination of additional factors is needed to continue the conversation regarding a pay gap between males and females in the faculty.
Book Synopsis Sex and Race Differences in Faculty Salaries, Tenure, Rank, and Productivity by : Michael T. Nettles
Download or read book Sex and Race Differences in Faculty Salaries, Tenure, Rank, and Productivity written by Michael T. Nettles and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examined the status and conditions of salaries, tenure, rank attainment, and productivity of men and women college faculty and faculty of each of five racial groups. It is based on a subset of data on 8,114 faculty members drawn from the 1992-93 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty. The results, based on descriptive and multivariate analyses, indicate that, even after controlling for experience, education, productivity, and institutional characteristics, women received 11.3 percent lower salaries than men, had lower probabilities than men of being tenured, and were less likely than men to be full professors. While Hispanic and Black faculty received salaries comparable to those of Whites, Hispanic and Black faculty were less likely than other faculty to be tenured. The study also found that, after controlling for race, education, experience, instructional and research activities, and institutional type, women faculty had 16.7 percent higher levels of career productivity standardized by teaching field than men. Hispanic faculty were found to be 17.1 percent more productive than faculty of other race groups. The implications of these and other findings for higher education are discussed."--Page 1.
