Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sajous's Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, Vol. 5 In presenting the fifth volume to the profession the editor cannot but express the hope that it will merit the kind appreciation bestowed upon its predecessors, not only by the patrons of the work, but also by the medical press. It has proved to be the most arduous one to prepare of the entire series, involving, as it does, almost every specialty - otology, laryngology, ophthalmology, neurology, pediatrics, obstetrics, therapeutics, etc. - besides the sections usually classed under general medicine and surgery. The continued assistance of the members of the associate staff has greatly facilitated the labors of the central department; the indebtedness involved is gratefully acknowledged. Death has claimed, since the publication of the fourth volume, two members of the associate staff: Dr. Norman Kerr, of London, and Dr. J. E. Graham, of Toronto. Dr. Kerr has been an associate editor since 1893, and his able articles upon inebriety, morphinism, and kindred disorders will doubtless be remembered by many of our readers, owing to the erudition displayed in them, the refined language used, and the elevated motives discernible in every line. The paper on "Morphinism" published in this volume is his last contribution to medical literature. Though written by the editor, it is elaborated in Dr. Kerr's own words, and portrays his thoughts; while his signature bears witness to a careful revision - accomplished not long before he departed this life. The special field to which Dr. Kerr devoted his labors has lost its most brilliant exponent; the profession at large one of its most faithful and honest workers. Dr. Graham had been a member of the staff about two years. His article upon "Cholelithiasis" - probably the finest encyclopaedic review of the subject extant - typifies all his labors, and, in particular, two traits which dominated his entire career: i.e., thoroughness and sincerity of purpose. His last contribution to medical literature will appear in the sixth volume of this work: the article on "Typhoid Fever." It fully sustains his reputation as one of Canada's most distinguished clinicians, and but accentuates the great loss which his untimely death has imposed upon the entire profession. Two kindred subjects have been treated in a manner differing somewhat from the usual, namely: the "Disorders of Pregnancy," by Dr. Currier, of New York, and "Abnormal Parturition," by Drs. Grandin and Marx, of the same city. Instead of repeating text with which a physician's shelves are usually fully supplied, - textbook matter, - these articles aim to give the newer aspects of these questions and the tendency of progressive thought. Among the other articles presented which call for especial notice are "Pleurisy," by Dr. Alexander McPhedran, of Toronto; "Catarrhal Pneumonia," by Dr. Solomon Solis-Cohen, of Philadelphia; "Lobar Pneumonia," by Dr. Thomas G. Each associate enjoying the privilege of erasing, changing, and adding anything he chose, the correctness of the views advanced was insured, while the innovations as to form introduced by the editor could satisfactorily be carried into effect. The second volume inaugurates the regular plan of the work as regards elaboration: all the articles have been prepared by their respective editors, and the result shows the kind interest taken in the work by all the members of the staff, to whom the editor extends expressions of sincere gratitude. The aim of the editor is not only to facilitate the labor of the practicing physician and to assist investigators and authors in their researches, but he also seeks to elucidate, through contributions from men possessing special knowledge or unusual experience in a particular line, diseases which, owing to their complexity, are not generally understood. This plan has borne fruit, and the readers will have before them, in this volume, exceptionally-valuable articles on a number of exacting subjects, namely: "Cerebral Haemorrhage," by Dr. William Browning, of Brooklyn; "Cirrhosis of the Liver," by Professor Adami, of Montreal; "Cholera," by Professor Rubino, of Naples; "Cholelithiasis," by Professor Graham, of Toronto; "Diabetes," by Professor Lepine, of Lyons, etc. The better-known affections have also been edited by writers of special ability. Among the articles of this kind is that on "Diphtheria," by Drs. Northrup and Bovaird, of New York, who contribute a masterly review of our present knowledge of this affection from every stand-point. The papers by Professor Bondurant, of Mobile, on "Chorea"; Dr. Norman Kerr, of London, on "Cocaino-mania"; Dr. Oliver, of Philadelphia, on "Cataract"; Prof. Nathan S. Davis, of Chicago, on "Constipation"; Dr. Vickery, of Boston, on "Dilatation of the Heart," are, among others, particularly entitled to the readers' special attention. An infirmity but little studied by the general practitioner is "Deaf-mutism." A section giving an exhaustive review of the subject has been contributed by Dr. Holger Mygind, of Copenhagen, one of the greatest living authorities upon the pathogenesis of this condition. In this manner the reader is saved all fatiguing study: he has before him what in the older work was left to his memory. The work, when completed, will present all the general diseases described In text-books on practical subjects - medicine, surgery, therapeutics, obstetrics, etc. - and, inserted in their logical order in the text, all the progressive features of value presented during the last decade. This will remove the cause of dissatisfaction caused by the absence of general subjects in the Older work. If the year brings forth nothing new upon any particular disease, the latter will, at least, appear as it was when last studied, whether this be one, two, five, or twenty years before. The general arrangement adopted will make it possible to cover the entire field in six volumes. As may be seen in any medical dictionary, the subjects treated in the first volume represent exactly one-sixth of the whole.
