Book excerpt: When Jeremy Lin began to knock down shots for the New York Knicks in 2012, many Americans became aware for the first time that Asian Americans actually play basketball. Indeed, long before Lin shook up the NBA, Asian Americans played the game with passion and skill, and many excelled at high school, college and professional hoops. This comprehensive history of Asian American basketball discusses how these players first found a sense of community in the game, and competed despite an atmosphere of anti-Asian bigotry in historical and contemporary America.

Book Synopsis A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms by :
Download or read book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms written by and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable interpretive tool, first published in 1937, is now available for the first time in a paperback edition specially aimed at students of Chinese Buddhism. Those who have endeavoured to read Chinese texts apart from the apprehension of a Sanskrit background have generally made a fallacious interpretation, for the Buddhist canon is basically translation, or analogous to translation. In consequence, a large number of terms existing are employed approximately to connote imported ideas, as the various Chinese translators understood those ideas. Various translators invented different terms; and, even when the same term was finally adopted, its connotation varied, sometimes widely, from the Chinese term of phrase as normally used by the Chinese. For instance, klésa undoubtedly has a meaning in Sanskrit similar to that of, i.e. affliction, distress, trouble. In Buddhism affliction (or, as it may be understood from Chinese, the afflicters, distressers, troublers) means passions and illusions; and consequently fan-nao in Buddhist phraseology has acquired this technical connotation of the passions and illusions. Many terms of a similar character are noted in the body of this work. Consequent partly on this use of ordinary terms, even a well-educated Chinese without a knowledge of the technical equivalents finds himself unable to understand their implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an outstanding work for which two eminent scholars of Chinese Buddhism separated by 2000 miles of ocean collaborated for complete ten years during which the manuscript crossed the Atlantic four times. The authors aim has been to provide a key for the student with which to unlock a closed door and which does serve to reveal the riches of the great Buddhist thesaurus in China. In the absence of a dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms it was small wonder that the translation of Chinese texts has made little progress important thought these are to the understanding of Mahayana buddhism especially in its Far Eastern development.
Book Synopsis The Saints of Formosa by : Campbell N. Moody
Download or read book The Saints of Formosa written by Campbell N. Moody and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints of Formosa: Life and Worship in a Chinese Church This volume aims at exhibiting the Church Life of Chinese Christians in Formosa. After explaining the methods by which converts are won, and showing how some heathen stand about the church doors, uncertain whether to enter or retire, it proceeds to describe the growth of Christian communities, and their efforts to house themselves in rude tabernacles. The Christian of the West is then invited to enter and witness the artless worship of the East. Thereafter our friendly reader is introduced to some typical members of the congregation; and, if their talk does not fatigue him, he may arrive at a bowing acquaintance with a preacher or two. The student is respectfully besought to pay some attention to our closing chapter. We find here "a day of small things," "a pulpit of wood," an unpretentious but not unpromising beginning. Book Synopsis Church in China: Faith, Ethics, Structure by : Aiming Wang
Download or read book Church in China: Faith, Ethics, Structure written by Aiming Wang and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Protestant Church in China is growing very fast. However, the role of the Church in society is still fragile and marginal. The Church needs a strong ethical and structural development. This study analyses the theological, ethical and ecclesiological heritage of the Reformation and it shows how this can build the foundation for the future of the Church in China. Four models serve as orientation: the Reformers Luther and Calvin and the theologians Bonhoeffer and Barth in the 20th century, with their vision of Christian faith and a humane society. The critical analysis of the missionary heritage since the 19th century shows its contribution for the acceptance of the tradition of the Reformation for the growing Church in China. The author combines this theological and ethical perspective with the inculturation in the strong ethical tradition of the Chinese culture. He proposes the encounter between the spirituality of the Western culture and that of the traditional culture of China through the relationship with Confucianism. The book also offers elements for the dialogue around modern values such as human rights and civil society. In this dialogue, Chinese Protestantism can play more and more an important role.

Special attention is given to tombs of Westerners and Russians still extant in Greater China, but also to those of some noted Chinese who were involved in transnational history during the 20th century. Tombs have a special potential to cast familiar things in a new light. They also provide the possibility to counter-check received narratives which might have been tailored along certain vested interests and circulated with specific target groups in mind. Gotelind Müller is Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Heidelberg.
Book Synopsis Vital Post-Secular Perspectives on Chinese Philosophical Issues by : Lauren F. Pfister
Download or read book Vital Post-Secular Perspectives on Chinese Philosophical Issues written by Lauren F. Pfister and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vital Post-Secular Perspectives on Chinese Philosophical Issues presents a number of contemporary philosophical issues from a wide range of Chinese philosophical texts, figures, and sub-traditions that are usually not addressed in English studies of Chinese philosophical traditions. Lauren F. Pfister presents new perspectives in three parts: the first part offers critical perspectives on the life and works of one of the most significant 20th century Chinese philosophers and historian of Chinese philosophical traditions, Feng Youlan (1895-1990); the second part explores questions related to Ruist (“Confucian”) theism and the complicated textual developments within two canonical Ruist texts, ending with a critique of a 21st century translation and interpretation of one of those two classical texts; the third part presents philosophical assessments of 20th and 21st century cultural issues that have had immense social and interpretive impacts in contemporary Chinese contexts – Chinese utopian projects, Chinese netizens in “Human Flesh Searches,” and questions about the links between sageliness and saintliness in Ruist and Christian communities.
Book Synopsis The Eminent Monk by : John Kieschnick
Download or read book The Eminent Monk written by John Kieschnick and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to reconstruct an elusive aspect of the medieval Chinese imagination, The Eminent Monk examines biographies of Chinese Buddhist monks, from the uncompromising ascetic to the unfathomable wonder-worker. While analyzing images of the monk in medieval China, the author addresses some questions encountered along the way: What are we to make of accounts in “eminent monk” collections of deviant monks who violate monastic precepts? Who wrote biographies of monks and who read them? How did different segments of Chinese society contend for the image of the monk and which image prevailed? By placing biographies of monks in the context of Chinese political and religious rhetoric, The Eminent Monk explores both the role of Buddhist literature in Chinese history and the monastic imagination that inspired this literature.
