Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart was born into a large devout family in Arezzo, Italy in 1747. From the earliest days of her childhood, Anna Maria was filled with a deep love of God, questioning the adults around her as to "Who is God"? Already she was dissatisfied with answers given her. Only the contemplative life of a Carmelite nun could begin to quench her thirst to know and give herself completely to God. Her entire life was driven by the desire to "return love for love." She entered the Carmelite convent in Florence at the age of seventeen, advanced rapidly in holiness, and died an extraordinary death at twenty-two. Her spiritual director reflecting on her death remarked, "She could not have lived very much longer, so great was the strength of the love of God in her." The cornerstone of St. Teresa Margaret's spirituality was to remain hidden, to appear just like everyone else in spite of her heroic virtue. To our loss, she has remained very much hidden even after her death. Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen commented, "This is an odd fact, for we do not hesitate to rank her among the primary figures who represent the glory of Carmel among Teresa of Jesus, John of the Cross, and Thérèse of the Child Jesus." Though St. Teresa Margaret led a life of exquisite holiness and purity, it was also a life that is wholly imitable. In her were combined Martha and Mary as she served her community as infirmarian while reaching the heights of contemplation. No one will come away from the pages of this book without his or her own spirit being renewed and reinvigorated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Teresa Margaret Redi was a Carmelite captivated by the love of God. Helping us to appreciate the holy life she led are eyewitness accounts of her spiritual directors collected soon after her death. The author of this small study builds his story on those accounts by the Discalced Carmelite friars who knew her as a young religious. Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene lays out clearly the steps in Saint Teresa Margaret's spiritual biography and how she developed her deep attachment to love for God, by using classic Carmelite doctrine about growth in the spiritual life. Teresa Margaret Redi was an Italian daughter of Saint Teresa of Jesus who lived in the eighteenth century (1747-1770). Like Saints Thérèse of Lisieux and Teresa de los Andes after her, her life in Carmel was brief. Her canonization came early in the last century (1934) and only now are we coming to appreciate better the spiritual legacy she left behind. This summary study by a noted spiritual theologian is a useful companion to the fuller biography of Margaret Rowe, God is Love: Saint Teresa Margaret, Her Life (ICS Publications, 2003).

Book excerpt: From his Jesuit background, Bernie Owens has written a twenty-first-century version of Teresa of Avila’s sixteenth-century classic, The Interior Castle. He writes in an experiential, easy-to-read style with numerous contemporary stories taken from North American and African cultures to illustrate the seven stages of spiritual growth Teresa describes. His book is a map for those seeking guidance on how to grow into praying and living contemplatively and dispose themselves for entering the deeper stages of the spiritual journey. Finally, he names issues that frequently emerge during the spiritual journey, describes the way for becoming a Beloved Disciple of Jesus as a proven path for living intimately with Christ and the Triune God, and, lastly, presents the kind of God Teresa knew and fiercely loved.

Book excerpt: Continuously popular since it first appeared in 1977, The Incorruptibles remains the acknowledged classic on the bodies of Saints that did not undergo decomposition after death, many remaining fresh and flexible for years, or even centuries. After explaining both natural and artificial mummification, the author shows that the incorruption of the Saints bodies fits into neither category but constitutes a much greater phenomenon which is unexplained by modern science even to this day. The author presents 102 canonized Saints, Beati and Venerables, summarizing their lives, the discovery of their incorruption and investigations by Church and medical authorities. The incorruptible bodies of saints are a consoling sign of Christ's victory over death, a confirmation of the dogma of the Resurrection of the Body, a sign that the Saints are still with us in the Mystical Body of Christ, as well as a proof of the truth of the Catholic Faith for only in the Catholic Church do we find this phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Maybe Sister Margaret Mary is a saint. Nonsense! The poor young woman has been out of her mind for years. Thats a lie! It is not! It is! The gossip in town raged on. The nuns themselves did not know what to think about this Sister who reportedly saw Our Lord. Even the superior, Mother Greyfie, didnt know what to think. But one day she decided to settle the question once and for all. For some time now Sister Margaret Mary had been seriously ill. Well, if Our Lord would cure her immediately and keep her in perfect health for five months, she, Mother Greyfie, would have no more doubts about the so-called apparitions, but would work to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart. So off went Mother Greyfie to the infirmary, where Sister Margaret Mary lay sick in bed. What was going to happen now? This book gives the answer. It also tells about Margarets painful days at home, her difficulties in becoming a nun, about St. Claude De la Colombiere, about the lonely young Catholic Duchess, and about Our Lords message concerning His Sacred Heart. In short, this is the remarkable story of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the wonderful promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Practicing the Presence of the Living God, intends to be a guide for a spiritual journey. It can be used in a retreat center, at home, or at work when you are able to secure a few moments of quiet solitude and silence. It is structured around seven days - the number of days normally used for a spiritual retreat. However, the seven days can be reduced to a weekend if this is all the time you can afford. It can also be spread to a much longer time if your circumstances do not allow you to have this amount of hours at the same time. All that you need is your total self. God is totally present to you and you should be totally present to God also. It is based on Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection's little book, The Practice of the Presence of God. The content of Brother Lawrence's book encompasses a lifelong application that is life-changing. Its message is transformative in its utmost clarity and simplicity because it reveals the heart and soul of everyone's life purpose and work - to live joyfully in the presence of God no matter what our circumstances are. In his book, Brother Lawrence reveals a very ordinary life that most of us would not really desire and yet as he fulfilled his everyday duties in the midst of the most mundane and tedious tasks, he learned to live the happiest and most rewarding life. With his gracious humility, "he thought...only of doing little things for the love of God since he was not capable of doing great things." Indeed, he modeled a life lived in the glory of God's love, peace, and joy. No wonder his book was called a "little spiritual classic," a "devotional masterpiece," an "unparalleled classic," and a book "relevant and timeless." Jean Maalouf in his thorough knowledge of Brother Lawrence's teachings becomes an exceptional guide for a retreat with Brother Lawrence. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jean Maalouf has two doctorates from Paris-Sorbonne University and L'Institut Catholique de Paris. He is the author and editor of more than twenty-five books that include the bestseller, Experiencing Jesus with Mother Teresa and the three books on prayer: The Healing Power of Prayer, I Can Tell God Anything: Living Prayer and Bold Prayers from the Heart. He also wrote numerous articles on spiritual, educational, psychological, philosophical, cultural, and social issues, as well as contributed to the Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy. He is a member of several associations that include the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Christian Philosophers, and Contemplative Outreach: Centering Prayer.

Book excerpt: Carmelite history and prayer begin with Elijah on Mount Carmel. From Elijah has descended a long line of saints who have heard the voice of the Lord calling them to leave everything and come "drink from the stream". This book is an invitation for you to come and pray with the holy men and women of the Carmelite order. The prayers and meditations in this book will help the reader listen to and pray with the saints of Carmel throughout the ages, from Elijah through the twentieth century. In these prayers are stories of particular times, places, longings, sometimes suffering, at other times ecstatic joy. These prayers allow one to enter into the most intimate depths of the souls of Carmelite saints. How better to learn than from the masters themselves. This book is made up of the prayers and meditations of more than twenty-five saints, along with a short biography of each saint, and numerous illustrations. In addition to helping one with prayer and meditation, it also provides prayer for specific topics. Whether one is a beginner or highly advanced in prayer, there is a prayer suitable for nearly every occasion. These magnificent prayers echo from prison cells, hospital beds, battlefields, and even treetops. It gives special emphasis to the prayers and meditations of the three great Carmelite mystics: Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Thérèse of Lisieux. But the other twenty-two saints include a wonderful variety, with Elizabeth of the Trinity, Simon Stock, Titus Brandsma, Edith Stein, and many more. Illustrated

Book excerpt: Teresa of Jesus of the Andes (Juanita Fernández Solar) became the first Chilean saint when she was canonized in 1993 by Pope St. John Paul II. In 1919, she entered the Discalced Carmelites of Los Andes at age eighteen and died only eleven months later. An inspiration to young people, she lived a vibrant social life amid school, sports, music, and friends, all the while being completely devoted to her faith. This volume, first published in 1994, contains the 164 letters of the saint translated by Father Michael Griffin, O.C.D. Despite her unusually brief life, Saint Teresa's collected letters have become a source of great spiritual enrichment and inspiration to many. They capture the saint's personality and share her major concerns, namely, her desire for union with God no matter the cost. Also included are a full chronology of her life and a thematic and explanatory introduction to the letters written by the translator.
