He requested me to open the series with biographical sketches of St. Chrysostom, the greatest of the Greek, and St. Augustin, the greatest of the Latin Fathers. To this proposal I readily consented, with the understanding that I could make free use of material which I had previously prepared and recently enlarged as editor of translations of the chief works of these Fathers.* The memory of St. Chrysostom and St. Augustin can never die. They left their mark on every page of Church history, and their teaching and example will continue to prepare preachers and divines for their work.
