Book Synopsis Wanderings and Sojourns - On Five Continents and Three Oceans - Book 1 by : Jim Scott
Download or read book Wanderings and Sojourns - On Five Continents and Three Oceans - Book 1 written by Jim Scott and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first of the Wanderings and Sojourns series, the reader is taken on a variety of journeys spanning all the continents of the world except Antarctica and Australasia. They'll travel by sea and land through Caribbean islands and sub-Saharan savannah, South American mountain ranges and rivers of Asia, North African markets and verdant English valleys, all the while living the adventures and experiences that gave rise to the unique philosophies shared within these pages. Interspersed between these true stories are works of lyrical verse; songs as varied as the wanderings and sojourns from which they were born. Themes vary from sharing of wisdom among travelers to respect for one's rifle during insurgent war, transition of a boy into manhood or the last portage two adventurers will ever share. The world beyond convention is the canvas upon which these unusual stories and songs are painted, the pallet comprises an entire spectra from shipwreck to war, spirituality to atavism, Aboriginals to ghosts, and the resulting pictures provide a fascinating view of the world as seen through unusual windows by someone who doesn't quite conform to the norms of society.
Book Synopsis Sailing and Social Class by : Alan O'Connor
Download or read book Sailing and Social Class written by Alan O'Connor and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sociology of sailing and yachting. Drawing on original research, and employing a theoretical framework based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the book argues that sailing is, still, an upper-middle-class activity that has much to tell us about the wider sociology of leisure and sport. The book examines the historical foundations of blue-water sailing as established by naval and colonial shipping, to trace the roots of contemporary sailing and yachting culture. It also examines archives of sailing narratives and cruising guides, as well as the children’s books of Arthur Ransome, arguing that this archival material offers a social rather than a psychological interpretation of the ‘bodily investment’ in sailing. The book uses Bourdieu’s concepts of ‘illusio’ – an investment of time, emotion and body into a worthwhile activity – and ‘habitus’, or lifeworld, alongside contemporary data sets, to examine the yacht club as a social institution, including why many boats never go out on the water, the relationship between yacht clubs and the state, and social issues as manifested in yacht clubs, such as sexism, racism and homophobia. Offering a vigorous sociological critique of yachting and sailing, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology of leisure and sport, subcultures, social theory, or social issues in wider society.

Book Synopsis Across the Oceans by : Seija-Riitta Laakso
Download or read book Across the Oceans written by Seija-Riitta Laakso and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2007-09-28 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 19th century, the only way to transmit information was to send letters across the oceans by sailing ships or across land by horse and coach. Growing world trade created a need and technological development introduced options to improve general information transmission. Starting in the 1830s, a network of steamships, railways, canals and telegraphs was gradually built to connect different parts of the world. The book explains how the rate of information circulation increased many times over as mail systems were developed. Nevertheless, regional differences were huge. While improvements on the most significant trade routes between Europe, the Americas and East India were considered crucial, distant places such as California or Australia had to wait for gold fever to become important enough for regular communications. The growth of passenger services, especially for emigrants, was a major factor increasing the number of mail sailings. The study covers the period from the Napoleonic wars to the foundation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and includes the development of overseas business information transmission from the days of sailing ships to steamers and the telegraph.

Book excerpt: Three vast oceans, two young men and one dubious idea - to sail around the world. When a sailboat barely bigger than a bathtub pottered into the English Channel, James and Tom began the adventure of a lifetime. In their little boat Blue Eye they set sail, ladened with the notion that happiness and freedom loitered just over the horizon. And yet as they journeyed between continents and across oceans, they found they were still anchored to their old unsatisfied selves. Hampered not only by the storms of the Atlantic Ocean and the pirates of the Red Sea, the craving nature of the human mind also threatens their bid to circumnavigate the world. From the Caribbean to the Suez Canal, James and Tom chase one sunset after the next, convinced a treasure trove of fulfilment lies waiting beyond the horizon. What will it take for them to discover that the sea is not always bluer on the other side? Hooked on the Horizon is Tom Dymond's travel memoir of sailing Blue Eye around the world. If you like being transported across oceans, escaping to far-flung paradises, and finding humour and philosophy in between, then you'll love the story of Blue Eye's adventure.
Book Synopsis Two Sailboats, One Moon by : Sue Montana
Download or read book Two Sailboats, One Moon written by Sue Montana and published by Tepin, Incorporated. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Sailboats, One Moon is full of drama and tenderness, frustration and courage, travel adventures and sailing stories, as well as the minutiae of daily life. Qualities of good character abound. In 2002, Bob Bennett and Sue Montana had been together for 17 years. They had made a point of revisiting - and renewing - their commitment to each other every few years, and talking about their goals as they looked towards the future. It was the year after 9/11, a horrible moment in history. At the same time, Bob was at a turning point at his job. As they reviewed their commitment and goals that year, Bob and Sue agreed that it was "time for Bob to do something different" with his life. They did not know then that "something different" would entail Bob resigning from his job and signing on as crew for a small sailboat that would spend a year circumnavigating the globe. In the meantime, Sue was launching a new business. It also fell to her, during the year of Bob's absence, to maintain the house they had purchased together. In addition, Sue had never captained their own sailboat, Habanero, by herself before this. So, while Bob was off sailing the seven seas, Sue mastered sailing Habanero by herself, as well as the fine art of small boat repairs. During this year Bob and Sue each kept journals of their daily activities, tracking the memorable events in their respective lives - crossing the equator for the first time, seeing fields of glaciers and pods of whales; taking Habanero out solo for the first time, dealing with the unexpected death of a beloved cat. And they recorded the more mundane details of day-to-day life as well - the types of things that you tend to forget when you aren't able to converse with your significant other many times a day. Every time they saw the moon in the sky at night, as they had promised, they not only thought of each other but they wrote about what they were doing and thinking at that moment in their journals. Like all sailing adventures, this one resonates with romance - the romantic notion of embarking on a round-the-world sailing adventure, and the eagerness with which these two sailors met up in foreign ports three times during this unforgettable year. But the very human realities are here, too - Sue's unexpected feelings of bereftness after Bob's departure, and Bob's unexpected doubts about his ability to stick it out for the entire circumnavigation. Two Sailboats, One Moon is unlike any sailing adventure you've read before!
