Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering eclectic topics ranging from South Asian religion to motherhood to world dance to ethnomusicology, this book focuses on contemporary selected experiences of women and how their lives interface with religion. Religion has often been perceived as the source of constriction for women's roles in society. This volume explores how modern women across Asia are mobilizing their faith traditions to address existential issues encountered in both the public and private realms, relating to economics, public participation, politics, and culture. As such, it is revealed that religion can be a powerful force for social change and ameliorating women's lives, despite use of religious doctrine in the past to limit women. Editor Zayn R. Kassam, PhD, and the contributors cover not only the commonly considered "Asian" traditions of Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism but also Christianity, Judaism, Bahai, and indigenous traditions. The book reveals that the challenges and opportunities Asian women face arise both from within and outside, whether in terms of developments within their countries or in relation to international political and economic regimes. The chapters explore how the issues Asian women face have as much to do with cultural and religious codes as they do with politics, economics, education, and the law; consider the varying ways in which family and motherhood are affected by the state's construction of the gendered citizen, by social constructs of motherhood, and by policies regarding women and children's access to health care; and identify the roles played by religion and spirituality in these circumstances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do writing and literacy reshape the ways a language and its literature are imagined? If All the World Were Paper explores this question in the context of Hindi, the most widely spoken language in Southern Asia and the fourth most widely spoken language in the world today. Emerging onto the literary scene of India in the mid-fourteenth century, the vernacular of Hindi quickly acquired a place alongside “classical” languages like Sanskrit and Persian as a medium of literature and scholarship. The material and social processes through which it came to be written down and the particular form that it took—as illustrated storybooks, loose-leaf textbooks, personal notebooks, and holy scriptures—played a critical role in establishing Hindi as a language capable of transmitting poetry, erudition, and even revelation. If All the World Were Paper combines close readings of literary and scholastic works with an examination of hundreds of handwritten books from precolonial India to tell the story of Hindi literature’s development and reveal the relationships among ideologies of writing, material practices, and literary genres. Tyler W. Williams forcefully argues for a new approach to the literary archive, demonstrating how the ways books were inscribed, organized, and used can tell us as much about their meaning and significance as the texts within them. This book sets out a novel program for engaging with the archive of Hindi and of South Asian languages more broadly at a moment when much of that archive faces existential threats.

Book excerpt: Every year, a group of Isha meditators sets out on a tour of the Himalayas. Accompanying them on this journey is Sadhguru – a spiritual master considered by many to be one of the foremost living yogis on the planet. This is a book for those who stayed behind. It is a chance to make a pilgrimage on the page, travelling through the unpredictable but fascinating terrain of the master’s words. Amalgamating discourses and conversations from several yatras, it is a blend of the specific and the timeless. This book is not just about the Himalayas. And yet, the book would never have happened without the Himalayas. The mountains play a vital role in the text, alternately as context and catalyst, mood and metaphor. Without them, some of the questions in this book would never have been asked. Even if they sometimes seem tangential to the line of enquiry, they remain a powerful subterranean presence, eventually becoming the very bedrock of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worship of a living person as a manifestation of the divine is here examined as it is practiced among the sants of North India. This well-researched book provides the first coherent understanding of the movement as a whole, tracing its sources in both Indic and Islamic milieus and contrasting its perceptions of guru and lineage with those found in orthodox versions of Hindu and Buddhist tantra and Indian Sufism. At the same time, Gold examines the dynamic between holy man and tradition, and guru and disciple, to provide a vivid portrayal of devotees' attitudes toward the independent, and at times highly idiosyncratic, holy men.

Book excerpt: Kirtan and yoga are spiritual practices that originated in the mystic East. In fact, kirtan - singing for the Divine - is a form of yoga that engages the heart, evoking emotion and joy. The Yoga of Kirtan will introduce readers, many for the first time, to this blissful yogic tradition. Here we learn of kirtan's history and origins, its different musical forms, and the instruments used in its performance. But, most importantly, in The Yoga of Kirtan we hear the voices of kirtan yogis from ages past. They reach out to us through the hearts and minds of their present-day representatives, such as Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, Deva Premal and Miten, Snatam Kaur, Vaiyasaki Das, Ragani and David Newman, among others. Through the insights of these modern-day chanters, we get a peek into the ecstasy of the chanting process. By allowing us to eavesdrop on their intimate conversations with Vaishnava scholar Steven Rosen, they unlock the mysteries of this age-old yogic tradition, helping us to see why chanting is indeed yoga and how easy and pleasurable it is to perform.

Book excerpt: Indian womanhood and its role in the national resurgence has long been a controversial field of research. But the bulk of published literature on women, with different subject-slants, has not yet been systematically surveyed and arranged for the use of scholars in the field. The present volume decidedly fills in a big gap in the bibliographic compilation on the subject. This annotated bibliography is a maiden venture that subject-wise organizes 823 published monographs, books, reports and research papers in English. A statistical analysis of the trend of research on women in India from the ancient times to the present offers an overview of the research already done, and in the process, it also identifies the gaps that await further scholarly research. The bibliography has been arranged under the broad categories of: General survey; Society and women; Economic status; Political status; Legal status; Education Women in Art and Culture; Biographies of eminent women. The subject divisions are then classified period-wise : (A) Ancient to Modern; (B) Ancient of Medieval; © Modern. A further classification is according to the type of material, i. e. books, reports, monographs and research papers. The appendices carry lists of unpublished theses submitted to universities during the last few years and a chronologically arranged list of legislations that have affected the lives of women in this country.

Book excerpt: A distinctive aspect of Hindu devotion is the veneration of a human guru, who is not only an exemplar and a teacher but is also understood to be an embodiment of the divine. Historically, the role of guru in the public domain has been exclusive to men. The new visibility of female gurus in India and the U.S. today, and indeed across the globe, has inspired this first-ever scholarly study of the origins, variety, and worldwide popularity of Hindu female gurus. In the Introduction, Karen Pechilis examines the historical emergence of Hindu female gurus with reference to the Hindu philosophy of the self, women spiritual exemplars as wives and saints, Tantric worship of the Goddess, and the internationalization of gurus in the U.S. in the twentieth century. Nine essays profile specific female gurus, presenting biographies of these remarkable women while highlighting overarching issues and themes concerning women's status as religious leaders; these themes are nuanced in the afterword to the volume. The essays explore how Hindu female gurus embody grace in both senses--as a feminine ideal and an attribute of the divine-and argue that their status as leaders is grounded in their negotiation of these two types of grace. This book provides biographical profiles of the following female gurus plus sensitive scholarly analysis of their spiritual paths: Ammachi, Anandamayi Ma, Gauri Ma, Gurumayi, Jayashri Ma, Karunamayi Ma, Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati, Mother Meera, Shree Maa and Sita Devi.
