This thought-provoking book clarifies these traditional Buddhist teachings, examines them in relation to their cultural origins, considers how they are still relevant today, and offers an imaginative reading of what the teachings could mean for us now. Above all, Exploring Karma & Rebirth insists that, to be of enduring value, these doctrines must continue to serve the overriding aim of Buddhism: spiritual awakening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Sapiens and Sthitaprajna studies the concept of a wise person in the Stoic Seneca and in the Bhagavadgita. Although the Gita and Seneca’s writings were composed at least two centuries apart and a continent apart, they have much in common in recommending a well-lived life. This book describes how in both a wise person is endowed with both virtue and wisdom, is moral, makes right judgements and takes responsibility for actions. A wise and virtuous person always enjoys happiness, as happiness consists in knowing that one has done the right thing at the right time. Both Seneca and the Gita demand intellectual rigour and wisdom for leading a virtuous and effective life. They provide guidelines for how to become and be wise. Both systems demand a sage to be emotionally sound and devoid of passions. This leads to mental peace and balance, and ultimately tranquillity and happiness. While surveying these similarities, this study also finds differences in their ways of application of these ideas. The metaphysics of the Gita obliges the sage to practise meditation, while the Stoics require a sage to be a rational person committed to analysing and intellectualizing any situation. This comparative study will be of interest to students of both Ancient Western and Ancient Indian Philosophy. Practitioners of Stoicism and followers of the Gita should find the presence of closely-related ideas in a very different tradition of interest while perhaps finding somewhat different prescriptions a spur to action. About the Author Ashwini Mokashi was educated at the University of Pune and at King’s College, London. She taught Philosophy at Pune in Wadia and Ferguson colleges and as a guest lecturer at the University of Pune, she taught a comparative course in Ancient Greek and Sanskrit during 1993-95. She now lives in Princeton, New Jersey and works on her writings in philosophy as an independent research scholar. She has served two terms as President of the Princeton Research Forum. Her next project is a personal and philosophical account of a meditational community in Pune and Nimbal.

Book excerpt: A person comes in the universe to do three jobs- Karma, Dharma, and Meditation. These three contain the entire philosophy of living. Karma is to take action for earning money, producing children and their bringing up while living in the universe; Dharma is to do this action as per tenets of one's Dharma and meditation is to surrender all one's doing to God. However, he gets absorbed in earning money and producing and bringing up children. He remembers nothing or a little of Dharma and completely ignores Meditation. This book, which is based on vast knowledge of Vedas and Shastras and over seventy years of experience of meditation is the answer to the fulfilment of one's jobs (mentioned above). The author has made these very easy to follow and intelligible, and it is hoped that the book would be of help to readers achieve the goal of Karma, Dharma and Meditation, which gives mental relief.

Book excerpt: Don't you think it is about time to take the reigns of your own life? In the Western Christian culture the concept of karma is frequently distorted, as if it were an inflexible destiny, something undoubtedly negative that must be paid with suffering. From the most ancient Hindu perspective, karma is a flexible potential that is generated and changes every moment by our actions, words, thoughts and intentions. In general, readers are only more or less familiar with karma and rarely know the principal of dharma. This book teaches revolutionary concepts about these two natural laws, karma and dharma, and provides the tools to act on them in order to change our lives as best suits us. Family, finances, health, intimate relationships, professional career, all of this you can manage if you know the foundations of the universal laws of cause and effect. And, it is not only possible to drive the designs of your own future, but also at work, whether it is your own business or someone else's, and even the designs of the State, whether you are a politician or a voter. You have the power to change your destiny.

Book excerpt: Camille Gardner is trapped in the middle when a unique Southern town collides with the 'outside world' and big oil.A talented negotiator, Camille Gardner agrees to take on one last field assignment for her uncle before she settles down to pursue her real passion---working at an art gallery. But she'd rather be anywhere than Samford, Louisiana, the small southern town where she once spent the worst weeks of her life.To fulfill the obligation she feels to her uncle, Camille needs to entice a group of rural landowners to sell their mineral rights---and allow use of their precious water for the drilling of natural gas. Instead, she finds herself drawn to the local folk art created by those same landowners and attracted to Marsh Cameron, the attorney representing the landowners. The charming residents and the traditions of this small community leave Camille conflicted about her family obligations---and her own plans for the future. Perhaps she needs to give Samford a second chance.'Christie populates her story with a varied cast of Southern small-town characters. Her tendency for unresolved suspense is occasionally unsettling, but, overall, her stories have enough warmth and humor to keep her readers coming back for more.' --- CBA Retailers + Resources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A global study of the psychospiritual body and its central role in the esoteric and spiritual traditions of the world • Explains the nature, purpose, and functions of the subtle body • Explores the role of the subtle body in such traditions as Alchemy, Ayurveda, Tantra, Qi Gong, and Yoga • Shows how the various layers of the subtle body provide a map for various levels of consciousness Ancient traditions of both the East and West have long maintained that the human being is a complex of material and nonmaterial systems, or energy bodies. The “subtle body” is an energetic, psychospiritual entity of several layers of increasing subtlety and metaphysical significance through which the aspirant seeks knowledge of the self and the nature of God. In many traditions, the component parts of the subtle body serve as a map of the different levels of consciousness. The practices and disciplines that evolved from an awareness and understanding of the subtle body, and how the material and nonmaterial work together, form a coherent system of psychospiritual transformation that is central to numerous and extremely diverse spiritual practices--including those of the Gnostics, Sufis, Native Americans, Vedic seers, Chinese, and Greeks. The subtle body plays an essential part in more recent traditions such as Anthroposophy and Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way and the cutting-edge science of Ervin Laszlo’s research into the Akashic field. But the benefits of understanding the role of the subtle energy body are not confined solely to the spiritual plane. The energetic bodies provide a coherent system of life-affirming principles and practices for the diagnosis and treatment of the whole person that is not only part of many traditional healing systems, such as Acupuncture and Ayurveda, but also is forming the basis for a synthesis of traditional and contemporary healing practices that could lay the foundation for the medicine of the future.

Book excerpt: This book provides a critical conceptual analysis of the concepts of karma, dharma and moksha which constitute the key features of religious, cultural, ethical and philosophical thoughts of the Hindus, the Jains and the Bauddha s. The book discusses various philosophical issues pertaining to these concepts in an analytical manner without showing any disrespect to any religious and philosophical systems of the Hindus, the Jains and the Bauddha s. It has been argued on the logical ground that the doctrine of karma suffers from its own inherent contradictions. But it does not rule out the possibility of human freedom and the attainment of moksha. The concept of karma does not preserve a single meaning in the Indian religious, cultural and ethical heritage. Its meaning has been changing at different stages. It has been also argued through the analysis of the concept of niskama karma that doing of any dharma does not make it either moral or immoral. It becomes moral only when dharma itself is moral. The concept of niskama karma is a teleological concept. It is not a deontological concept like the Kantian concept of duty as it is generally understood by many Indian scholars. We all face moral dilemma in our day-to-day s life. This book-provides a solution to this problem. The author also argues on the rational ground that we can solve religious conflicts by secularizing our religion in an ethical way without discarding it or showing any disrespect to any other religion and can live a better and happier life for which we all aspire. Its simple analytical style makes it useful not only for students and teachers of philosophy but also for general readers who have keen interest in the Indian religious and cultural -traditions. Most of the topics of this book are included in the under-graduate and post graduate syllabi of many Indian Universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unvarnished accounting of one man's struggle toward sexual and emotional maturity. In this unconventional memoir, Jonathan Alexander addresses wry and affecting missives to a conflicted younger self. Focusing on three years--1989, 1993, and 1996--Dear Queer Self follows the author through the homophobic heights of the AIDS epidemic, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of Bill Clinton, and the steady advancements in gay rights that followed. With humor and wit afforded by hindsight, Alexander relives his closeted college years, his experiments with his sexuality in graduate school, his first marriage to a woman, and his budding career as a college professor. As he moves from tortured self-denial to hard-won self-acceptance, the author confronts the deeply uncomfortable ways he is implicated in his own story. More than just a coming-out narrative, Dear Queer Self is both an intimate psychological exploration and a cultural examination--a meshing of inner and outer realities and a personal reckoning with how we sometimes torture the truth to make a life. It is also a love letter, an homage to a decade of rapid change, and a playlist of the sounds, sights, and feelings of a difficult, but ultimately transformative, time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world today is facing a bewildering array of problems where human behavior is both brazen and bizarre. Those who are searching for a way out are daring to ask fundamental questions: What is man’s rightful place? Are we a doomed species? Is God becoming weary of mankind? In Man’s Fate and God’s Choice, Bhimeswara Challa shares his comprehensive study of human behavior that suggests that the very paradigm of our thinking is inappropriate for the current challenges we face. In a thoughtful, innovative presentation of ideas, Challa posits that any betterment in human behavior needs a cathartic change at the deepest level, ultimately reawakening the intelligence of the human heart. He begins by examining the greatest challenge of this generation of human beings and continues by placing the multiple identities of man in perspective, reviewing our growing insensitivity to human suffering. Finally, he looks to the living world for inspiration, metaphors, and models for human transformation. Man’s Fate and God’s Choice incisively covers an array of issues and proposes an agenda for action as it challenges those who see misery and ask “Why?” to also see the promise in the rainbow and then ask “Why not?”
