Book excerpt: Six different finite element models have been developed to analyze rolled joints between pressure tubes and end fittings. a brief summary of each is presented here. five of them are axisymmetric and one is a plane strain model. each model simulates one or more aspects of rolled joint behaviour. some of them also include the effects of operating conditions (elevated temperature and pressure). it is hoped that by combining the models/results, a more complete description of the behaviour of rolled joints can be obtained. the axisymmetric models are presented here in the order in which they were developed. the first is the interference fit model, where contact pressure is simulated by shrink fitting an initially larger tube into a smaller end fitting. the pullout process is also analyzed in this model. two forced displacement models are presented (one for the expanded zone and one for the transition zone), in which tube wall thinning is simulated by specifying radial displacements for the inside and outside surfaces of the tube. in the axial rolling model, rolling is simulated by imposing sequential radial displacements along the length of the tube and forcing the tube material into the grooves of the end fitting, which is considered rigid. finally, a boundary condition model is presented, which uses shell elements and imposed boundary conditions to calculate stresses in the transition zone only. the circumferential rolling model is a plane strain model that simulates the rolling of a tube into a grooveless end fitting. radial displacements are imposed on the tube, applying them sequentially in the circumferential direction at five discrete locations. this simulates the local loading and unloading of the tube material that occurs at the rollers.

Download or read book Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid written by National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion energy offers the prospect of addressing the nation's energy needs and contributing to the transition to a low-carbon emission electrical generation infrastructure. Technology and research results from U.S. investments in the major fusion burning plasma experiment known as ITER, coupled with a strong foundation of research funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), position the United States to begin planning for its first fusion pilot plant. Strong interest from the private sector is an additional motivating factor, as the process of decarbonizing and modernizing the nation's electric infrastructure accelerates and companies seek to lead the way. At the request of DOE, Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid builds upon the work of the 2019 report Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U.S. Burning Plasma Research to identify the key goals and innovations - independent of confinement concept - that are needed to support the development of a U.S. fusion pilot plant that can serve as a model for producing electricity at the lowest possible capital cost.

Book Synopsis Revisiting South Africa's Nuclear Weapons Program by : David Albright
Download or read book Revisiting South Africa's Nuclear Weapons Program written by David Albright and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, South Africa made the momentous decision to abandon its nuclear weapons, making it the first and still the only country that has produced nuclear weapons and given them up. Over thirty years, the apartheid regime had created a remarkably sophisticated capability to build nuclear weapons-both the nuclear warhead and advanced military systems to deliver them. The program was born in secret and remained so until its end. The government initially sought to dismantle it in secret. It hoped to avoid any negative international consequences of possessing nuclear weapons. The apartheid government's strategy did not work, because too many intelligence agencies knew about South Africa's nuclear weapons. Faced with intense pressure, South Africa's President F.W. de Klerk reversed course and adopted a policy of transparency in 1993. However, he decided to hide many of its aspects. Nonetheless, most of the remaining secrets emerged over the ensuing 25 years. Revisiting South Africa's Nuclear Weapons Program draws on previously secret information to provide the first comprehensive, technically-oriented look at South Africa's nuclear weapons program; how it grew, evolved, and ended. It also finds lessons for today's nuclear proliferation cases.

Book Synopsis Leadership and Management for Safety by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Leadership and Management for Safety written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Safety Standards Series N. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Requirements publication establishes requirements that support Principle 3 of the Fundamental Safety Principles in relation to establishing, sustaining and continuously improving leadership and management for safety and an integrated management system. It emphasizes that leadership for safety, management for safety, an effective management system and a systemic approach (i.e. an approach in which interactions between technical, human and organizational factors are duly considered) are all essential to the specification and application of adequate safety measures and to the fostering of a strong safety culture. Leadership and an effective management system will integrate safety, health, environmental, security, quality, human-and-organizational factor, societal and economic elements. The management system will ensure the fostering of a strong safety culture, regular assessment of performance and the application of lessons from experience. The publication is intended for use by regulatory bodies, operating organizations (registrants and licensees) and other organizations concerned with facilities and activities that give rise to radiation risks.

Download or read book Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation, United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) 2016 Report written by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.
