Book Synopsis Japan's Dietary Transition and Its Impacts by : Vaclav Smil
Download or read book Japan's Dietary Transition and Its Impacts written by Vaclav Smil and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the transformation of the Japanese diet from subsistence to abundance and an assessment of the consequences for health, longevity, and the environment. In a little more than a century, the Japanese diet has undergone a dramatic transformation. In 1900, a plant-based, near-subsistence diet was prevalent, with virtually no consumption of animal protein. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, Japan's consumption of meat, fish, and dairy had increased markedly (although it remained below that of high-income Western countries). This dietary transition was a key aspect of the modernization that made Japan the world's second largest economic power by the end of the twentieth century, and it has helped Japan achieve an enviable demographic primacy, with the world's highest life expectancy and a population that is generally healthier (and thinner) than that of other modern affluent countries. In this book, Vaclav Smil and Kazuhiko Kobayashi examine Japan's gradual but profound dietary change and investigate its consequences for health, longevity, and the environment. Smil and Kobayashi point out that the gains in the quality of Japan's diet have exacted a price in terms of land use changes, water requirements, and marine resource depletion; and because Japan imports so much of its food, this price is paid globally as well as domestically. The book's systematic analysis of these diverse consequences offers the most detailed account of Japan's dietary transition available in English.
Book Synopsis Worker Protection, Japanese Style by : Richard E. Wokutch
Download or read book Worker Protection, Japanese Style written by Richard E. Wokutch and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crucially important to both the United States and Japan, the automotive industry has served as a bellwether of national economic and social trends. Richard Wokutch compares the regulation and management of worker safety and health in the two countries and, more specifically, analyzes a Japanese automotive firm's operations in the United States. His research provides a concrete issue around which the Japanese conceptualization of corporate social responsibility can be examined. Regulation and management reflect some fundamental differences between Japan and the United States. Relations among management, labor, and government in addressing occupational safety and health are highly cooperative and nonadversarial in Japan, in sharp contrast to the situation in the United States. The Japanese use a behavioral approach to safety and health, relying on workers to follow certain rules for their own protection. Americans, however, depend on what Wokutch describes as an engineering approach, making machines and work sites as hazard-proof as possible. Japan's management practices and government policies have become objects of fascination in the West. Wokutch's careful analysis of occupational safety and health provides a lens through which those practices and policies may be focused. His book will interest those concerned with occupational safety and health and with the automotive industry, but also those who are eager to understand how some of the most effective national and corporate practices might be adapted cross-nationally.

Book Synopsis Handbook for the Analysis and Identification of Alternative Refrigerants by : Thomas J. Bruno
Download or read book Handbook for the Analysis and Identification of Alternative Refrigerants written by Thomas J. Bruno and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many laboratories are engaged in research on the development of new fluids for use as refrigerants to replace the fully halogenated materials that are believed to contribute to atmospheric ozone depletion. An integral part of this effort is the chemical analysis of new fluids that are synthesized, prepared, and tested. This comprehensive book, which is divided into two parts, fills an important need in this vital chemical analysis protocol. The first part reviews the major chemical analysis methods that have been developed and used at NIST and in other laboratories. This review covers spectroscopic, chromatographic, and "wet" analytical methods, with treatment divided by qualitative identification, qualitative determinations, and chemical reaction screening. The second part contains a compilation of analytical information of the new fluids and their products. Physical properties, mass spectra, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, and gas chromatographic retention data are provided for each fluid or product.
