This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Falls Prevention for Active Ageing model provides an action plan for making progress in reducing the prevalence of falls in the older adult population. By building on the three pillars of falls prevention, the model proposes specific strategies for: 1. Building awareness of the importance of falls prevention and treatment; 2. Improving the assessment of individual, environmental, and societal factors that increase the likelihood of falls; and 3. For facilitating the design and implementation of culturally appropriate, evidence-based interventions that will significantly reduce the number of falls among older persons. The model provides strategies and solutions that will require the engagement of multiple sectors of society. It is dependent on and consistent with the vision articulated in the WHO Active Ageing Policy Framework. Although not all of the awareness, assessment, and intervention strategies identified in the model apply equally well in all regions of the world, there are significant evidence-based strategies that can be effectively implemented in all regions and cultures. The degree to which progress will be made depends on to the success in integrating falls prevention strategies into the overall health and social care agendas globally. In order to do this effectively, it is necessary to identify and implement culturally appropriate, evidence-based policies and procedures. This requires multi-sectoral, collaborations, strong commitment to public and professional education, interaction based on evidence drawn from a variety of traditional, complementary, and alternative sources. Although the understanding of the evidence-base is growing, there is much that is not yet understood. Thus, there is an urgent need for continued research in all areas of falls prevention and treatment in order to better understand the scope of the problem worldwide. In particular, more evidence of the cost-effectiveness of interconnections is needed to develop strategies that are most likely to be effective in specific setting and population sub-groups.

Book excerpt: Falls take the lives of 684 000 people each year. Beyond the death toll, 172 million more people experience disabilities arising from a fall each year. Falls are not only a significant global public health problem – they are a rapidly growing one. Fall-related deaths have risen far faster than any other type of injury over the last two decades. Many factors account for this increase – ageing populations and patterns of urbanization chief among them. The Step Safely technical package provides concrete recommendations for evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage falls for children and adolescents, workers, and older people. Among others, effective prevention measures include parenting programmes for low-income and marginalized families, stricter worker safety regulations, and strength and balance training for older people. Preventing falls can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals linked to health and well-being, decent work, and safe, inclusive cities. The global community should actively look for opportunities to reduce the growing harm, suffering and loss that result from falls.

Book excerpt: Did you know that 75% of falls experienced by older people occur in their home. All too often a fall can result in injuries that range from mild to serious, causing broken bones, head contusions and emergency room visits. If the older person has a history of falls, the risk is even greater. Fortunately, many falls occurring in the home are preventable. Home: Safe Haven or Fall Hazard? Environmental Modifications to Avoid Falling addresses some of the most common fall hazards found in the home. It covers potential safety threats in the bathroom bedroom, and kitchen and mobility challenges due to faulty lighting, stairs and flooring, including the terrain outside the home. The book offers guidance for older people, their adult children and/or health caregivers to help them spot potential fall hazards in the home and the steps needed to correct or modify them. Each chapter includes a description of the hazards, their solutions and why certain modifications are recommended for older people with varying levels of physical abilities. Photos accompany many of the modifications to further assist the reader. Home: Safe Haven or Fall Hazard? Environmental Modifications to Avoid Falling is designed to make readers aware of hazardous conditions and their possible solutions. My hope is that readers will gain an appreciation of the potential fall dangers lurking in the homes of many older people and take action and/or explore appropriate solutions in greater detail.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times–bestselling authors, this “chilling and engrossing” nuclear-showdown thriller packs “a multi-megaton wallop” (Chicago Tribune). Originally published during the Cuban Missile Crisis, this suspenseful novel takes off as a group of American bombers—armed with a deadly payload of nuclear weapons—heads towards Moscow, their motives unknown. Suddenly, a nuclear apocalypse looms closer than it ever has, and the lives of millions depend on the high-stakes diplomacy of leaders on both sides of the divide. The basis for the classic 1964 movie starring Henry Fonda, this two-million-copy bestseller is not only a terrifying thriller, but a fascinating social commentary on Cold War politics and a look at how, in a world poised on the brink, accidents and mistakes can have catastrophic consequences. Exploring the thin line between peace and global destruction that characterized this turbulent era, it is as timely as ever—“gripping, exciting and almost unbearably fascinating” (Los Angeles Times). “Excruciatingly tense.” —The Wall Street Journal
