Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safe Farming in the Southern States in 1920 Grain sorghums: In connection with corn production we should consider the grain sorghums. It ought to be pretty clear to farmers in western Texas and Oklahoma that corn is an unsafe crop on most of the lands in that territory. In all of the drier sections of Oklahoma and Texas grain sorghums should be the main dependable food and feed crop. The planting of corn in west Texas and Oklahoma should be abandoned except on land which produced a fair return of sound corn in 1918. If there is any increase in corn acreage in either Texas or Oklahoma it should be in the extreme eastern section of both States. The need for grain for food and feed should be met by production of grain sorghums. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soils and Agriculture of the Southern States It was the original intention to limit the area discussed in this volume to the region known as the Cotton Belt. As the work progressed, a number of reasons occurred for increasing the size of the territory included. The soils of the Cotton Belt do not stop at the northern limit of cotton production, but they extend far north of that line. The type of agriculture practiced in the Cotton Belt grades into that practiced in the region to the north without any sharp regional division line. The eastern tobacco belt extends far down into the Cotton Belt, corn is grown through almost the whole of the Belt, as well as in the region to the north, and other staple crops of the more northerly regions are, also, staple crops in many parts of the South. Months, recoveries in certain important fields were well under way - as for example in the textile, automobile, and building industries. In the present depression, already nearly _two and a half years in duration, only the con sumer industries - textile, boots and shoes, and foods - are at a higher level than last December, while the others reached in September and October the lowest levels so far in this depression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Agriculture The growth of wild plants is determined by two sets of factors, those connected with the soil and those connected with the climate. Cultivated plants are also subject to these same conditions except in So far as these may be modified by human effort. Cultivation is the collective name for all those pro cesses by which man seeks to alter these environ mental conditions, thus making them more favorable for his crops. It is easier to modify soil conditions than climatic conditions, hence the climate of any region must always profoundly influence its agri culture. Climate depends On the two factors of temperature and humidity. A climate may be hot or cold, wet or dry, and the kinds of crops that can be grown will vary accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter and Farmer, Vol. 3: Devoted to Agriculture, Horticulture and the Mining, Mechanic and Household Arts; July, 1869 Medium-farming pays better than low everywhere. High farm ing' pays better than medium wherever the circumstances exist which call for it. Farming in a way that deteriorates the soil, will not pay, in the long run. Farming that improves the soil a little each year, as God made it to be improved by the brains and hands of man, will pay always and everywhere. Thousands of farmers, in all parts of our country, fail of the best rewards of farming by too low cultivation, for every one who fails by cultivating too highly. The danger of failure by going down the scale too low, is a thou sand times greater than that of ascending too high. Let us strive to avoid the fermer, and not be over fearful of the latter. - nash, in the Working Farmer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truck-Farming at the South: A Guide to the Raising of Vegetables for Northern Markets Owing to the perishable nature of the products, the areas at the South devoted to truck-farming must remain confined to certain limits. These will be near the larger cities and along the routes of railroads, by which products can be safely and expeditiously dispatched to market. Although truck-farming can employ but a comparatively small proportion of the labor Of the South, it must be followed according to the same principles and system that govern general agriculture. The negro must be accepted as the only practical solution of the labor question, and, notwithstanding his instability, he is the best for many reasons. It would be impolitic, even were it possible, to trust to more intelligent and energetic laborers from abroad, and mix the two races as field laborers. No dependence could be placed upon retaining the foreign help, as his greater energy and a praiseworthy desire for self-elevation would soon prompt the emigrant, or white laborer, to change his status and better his condition. Book excerpt: "Farming While Black is the first comprehensive "how to" guide for aspiring African-heritage growers to reclaim their dignity as agriculturists and for all farmers to understand the distinct, technical contributions of African-heritage people to sustainable agriculture. At Soul Fire Farm, author Leah Penniman co-created the Black and Latino Farmers Immersion (BLFI) program as a container for new farmers to share growing skills in a culturally relevant and supportive environment led by people of color. Farming While Black organizes and expands upon the curriculum of the BLFI to provide readers with a concise guide to all aspects of small-scale farming, from business planning to preserving the harvest. Throughout the chapters Penniman uplifts the wisdom of the African diasporic farmers and activists whose work informs the techniques described--from whole farm planning, soil fertility, seed selection, and agroecology, to using whole foods in culturally appropriate recipes, sharing stories of ancestors, and tools for healing from the trauma associated with slavery and economic exploitation on the land. Woven throughout the book is the story of Soul Fire Farm, a national leader in the food justice movement." --
