Book excerpt: Go on a Breathtaking Journey Into Your Brain It seems our brains have a multitude of ways of doing things we have absolutely no idea about. In fact, Dr. Eric Haseltine builds a fascinating and convincing argument that our brains actually go out of their way to hide their actions from us. Through a series of fun, quick experiments that you can do by yourself, you will uncover these surprising secrets while on a thought-provoking adventure. Much more "show" than "tell," Brain Safari gives you direct, immediate experiences with the inner workings of your brain. Each of these experiences is designed to startle, amaze, and inform, and they don't fall short of that goal. Dr. Haseltine brings decades of imaginative and informative experience to this book. It will leave you in awe of the complicated organ within your head.

Book excerpt: This safari will send students on an expedition that will result in hours of good thinking and unbridled enthusiasm. As enthusiasm soars, so do the levels of thinking skills engaged. Students love these deductive logic puzzles so much that they beg to do them, little realizing that they are building important reading comprehension and thinking skills. Teachers love these puzzles because of their ease of use in multicurricular parallels and their effortlessness in fitting into pullout programs of limited duration. Each motivating puzzle includes an introduction with student-related topics, clues, a grid, and an illustration. The goal in Logic Safari is to hunt down the clues, sort, analyze, and combine them into the correct solution. Each book represents an ever-increasing challenge to students while scenarios remain fresh, evoking renewed eagerness. The size of the grids is an indication of difficulty. This is the first book in a three-part series of deductive logic puzzles. For more advanced puzzles, see Logic Safari Book 2 and Logic Safari Book 3. Grades 2-3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karamojo Safari, first published in 1949, is a classic story of elephant hunting, safaris, native life, and the wilds of Uganda and Kenya in the late 1800s, at a time when the region (then known as “Karamojo”) was completely unknown to the outside world. Walter Bell (1880-1954), known as Karamojo Bell, was a Scottish adventurer, big game hunter in East Africa, soldier, decorated fighter pilot, sailor, writer, and painter. Famous for being one of the most successful ivory hunters of his time, Bell was an advocate of the importance of shooting accuracy and shot placement with smaller calibre rifles, over the use of heavy large-bore rifles for big African game. He improved his shooting skills by careful dissection and study of the anatomy of the skulls of the elephants he shot. He even perfected the clean shooting of elephants from the extremely difficult position of being diagonally behind the target; this shot became known as the Bell Shot. Although chiefly known for his exploits in Africa, Bell also traveled to North America and New Zealand, sailed windjammers, and saw service in South Africa during the Boer War, and flew in the Royal Flying Corps in East Africa, Greece and France during World War I.

Book excerpt: Dan Eldon, the well-traveled son of an American mother and English father, grew up in Kenya and eventually became one of the first photojournalists to document the famine and anarchy in Somalia in the early 1990s. He died at age 23 while working for Reuters, stoned to death by a mob in Mogadishu reacting to a UN bombing raid. This handsome and touching biography includes many of Eldon's photos and collages as well as entries from his journals, excerpts from letters to his family, and memories from his many friends. The writer, an educational consultant based in Iowa, fell in love with Eldon's work the first time she saw it and became determined to use the art as a launching pad for educational materials--a project his family embraced. c. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misplacing your wallet, forgetting where you parked your car, or getting your friend's birthday wrong: these are just some of the many common memory slips we all experience from time to time. And such cognitive lapses don't just plague the elderly: the most common worry of people over 40 is memory loss. A recent study by Newcastle University, featured on BBC news, showed that art therapy has greater benefits than puzzles and exercises when it comes to improving memory function. Engaging the brain in new and creative ways may be the key to a sharper 'younger' mind. Helping to enhance your brain's cognitive function through art therapy techniques, this book contains 30 intricate line drawings of safari animals, with space on the opposite page for you to copy the illustration and some helpful hints to start you off. There is also the opportunity to colour in and to create some of your own illustrations as you progress. Gradually becoming more challenging, every page will help to stimulate parts of the brain that are vital for memory retention. With this book you will draw your way to a younger brain.
