Book excerpt: How to describe the nature of criminal acts, the evil residing in the head of a serial killer, or two, as in the case of David Gore and his cousin, Fred Waterfield? How can an author spin the tale of murder most foul, of tricks used by killers to lure their unsuspecting victims into the web of deceit that will end their lives? David Alan Gore was an American serial killer who confessed to and was convicted of, six murders in Vero Beach and Indian River County, Florida in the 1980s. Gore was executed by lethal injection in 2012, having been on Florida's death row for 28 years. Gore had an accomplice, his cousin Fred Waterfield, and the pair were dubbed the "Killing Cousins". Waterfield was convicted of two murders and is currently serving two consecutive life sentences. When Killing Cousins David Alan Gore and Fred Waterfield realized as teens that they shared the same sick, twisted sex fantasies of raping helpless, bound women who were completely at their mercy, Florida's quiet Vero Beach would never be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Killing Cousins David Alan Gore and Fred Waterfield realized as teens that they shared the same sick, twisted sex fantasies of raping helpless, bound women who were completely at their mercy, Florida's quiet Vero Beach would be never be the same. Some of the least remorseful of all American serial killers, the deadly duo stalked their victims, often hitchhikes they believed would never be missed, using Gore's auxiliary deputy badge as a ruse to lure them into their vehicle. After that, they were most likely to be driven to their deaths. Their evil, sadistic story from the annals of Florida history is one that will chill even longtime fans of true crime murder, especially after reading excerpts from the letters Gore wrote from prison, in which he shared deplorable secrets that made him one of the most demented sex criminals of all time. Gore once told a psychologist that "the devil made me do it," but those who came in contact with Gore - including the law enforcement officials that ultimately put him on Death Row - believed he was the devil due to his depraved levels of cruelty. Among the psychopaths and sociopaths that have walked the earth, Gore was one of the worst, although those who knew them say that it was Fred Waterfield, the more popular cousin who always played the good guy to Gore's bad, who was the true brains of the outfit. As it happens, he probably was, because Waterfield almost got away with murder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years after Edward Channing's death in 1931, historians differed rather widely in their evaluation of his work. A British author, surveying American historiography since 1890, was quite critical of Channing's major contribution, the six-volume History of the United States, contending that it "won only a contemporary reputation which is not wearing well. "l Referring specifically to the second volume of the History, this writer stated his feeling that it "added little of substance to what was to be found in earlier works," and that it "was so partisan as sometimes to be quite misleading. "2 Quite a different view was expressed by an American historian writing in the same year. He felt that Channing seemed "assured of a niche in the his torians' Hall of Fame as one of the giants of American historiography. "3 Many of Channing's findings were new, this writer emphasized, and had been useful to other historians. He concluded that Channing's History "wears well twenty years after his death," and, indeed, "remains one of the major accomplishments in the field of American historical writing. '" Some support is given to the latter interpretation by a poll of historians, once again dated 1952, to determine preferred works in American history published between 1920 and 1935. Channing's History finished eighth, fol lowing only the works of Parrington, Turner, Webb, Beard, Andrews, 5 Becker, and Phillips.
