Book excerpt: The 1990 Annual Consultative Conference put the spotlight on issues of human resources development. The Conference Theme: Human Resources: A Primary Factor in Development, clearly acknowledged that development of the region's human capital to its fullest potential, was a prerequisite for tackling the socio-economic problems of SADCC member States. Indeed, SADCC has to significantly increase the productivity of its people by providing better education, skills, technology, and above all, by creating a supportive environment for the optimal utilisation of people's skills, creativity and enterprise. The Conference took a step further, from last year's theme, to link issues of human development and freedom with those of enterprise, investment and production.

How and under what conditions does the European Union (EU) shape processes of institution building in other regional organizations? Interorganizational Diffusion in International Relations: Regional Institutions and the Role of the European Union develops and tests a theory of interorganizational diffusion in international relations that explains how successful pioneer organizations shape institutional choices in other organizations by affecting the institutional preferences and bargaining strategies of national governments. The author argues that Europe's foremost regional organization systematically affects institution building abroad, but that such influence varies across different types of organizations. Mixing quantitative and qualitative methods, it shows how the EU institutionally strengthens regional organizations through active engagement and by building its own institutions at home. Yet, the contractual nature of other regional organizations bounds this causal influence; EU influence makes a distinguishable difference primarily in those organizations that, like the EU itself, rest on an open-ended contract. Evidence for these claims is drawn from the statistical analysis of a dataset on the institutionalization of 35 regional organizations in the period from 1950 to 2017 as well as detailed single and comparative case studies on institutional creation and change in the Southern African Development Community, Mercosur, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. It brings together work that significantly advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series targets mainly single-authored or co-authored work, but it is pluralistic in terms of disciplinary specialization, research design, method, and geographical scope. Case studies as well as comparative studies, historical as well as contemporary studies, and studies with a national, regional, or international focus are all central to its aims. Authors use qualitative, quantitative, formal modeling, or mixed methods. A trade mark of the books is that they combine scholarly rigour with readable prose and an attractive production style. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the VU Amsterdam, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.

Book Synopsis Disarmament and Defence Industrial Adjustment in South Africa by : Peter G. Batchelor
Download or read book Disarmament and Defence Industrial Adjustment in South Africa written by Peter G. Batchelor and published by Sipri Monograph. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Batchelor and Susan Willett analyse the response of the South African defence industry to drastic cuts in military expenditure and the demilitarization of society since the end of the cold war and apartheid, and the stabilization of the regional security situation. The new ANC-led government is seeking to use the resources released - the `peace dividend' - to restructure and revitalize the country's industrial base and to support reconstruction, development, and redistribution. A lively debate on the country's security needs and strategic doctrine is under way. As in other countries, strategies of industrial diversification and conversion have met with limited success. In the absence hitherto of any coherent government policy on defence industrial adjustment, significant skills and technologies have been lost or wasted. This book provides a historical analysis of South Africa's unique opportunity to develop new and innovative policies on defence and security matters, the arms industry and arms exports, and makes a valuable contribution to the international debate on the relationship between disarmament and development.

Book Synopsis The Southern African Development Community in Zimbabwe by : Rich Mashimbye
Download or read book The Southern African Development Community in Zimbabwe written by Rich Mashimbye and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book narrates the unravelling of Zimbabwe, a country that was once considered an inspiration on the continent of Africa in terms of socioeconomic development. Recognising that many factors contributed to the collapse of the nation, and that this collapse was a process that occurred over a long period, it looks at historical events and processes like the colonisation of the country and dispossession of the indigenous people, and the misrule, politically-motivated violence and economic mismanagement that followed under Robert Mugabe, as the pivotal moments that precipitated the subsequent fall of Zimbabwe. The book also examines the role that the regional intergovernmental organisation, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), played in trying to help Zimbabwe overcome its security, political and economic challenges.

Book Synopsis Defensive Restructuring of the Armed Forces in Southern Africa by : Bjørn Møller
Download or read book Defensive Restructuring of the Armed Forces in Southern Africa written by Bjørn Møller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, the work explores the reorientation of security policies and the accompanying restructuring of the armed forces going on in Southern Africa under entirely new circumstances: Democracy has come to South Africa, the civil wars in Angola and Mozambique have ended, and the region is establishing a regional framework for cooperation. While covering the entire region, a special focus is placed on South Africa which is predestined to play a leading role, but which is struggling with the legacy of the apartheid regime and its repeated aggressions against neighbouring states. A defensive restructuring of the South African of the South African military is an element in the building of mutual trust. The implications of such defensive restructuring to a non-offensive defence are described in detail. In addition to the analytical contribution, the work also contains central documents and a bibliography.
Book Synopsis South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation by : James J. Hentz
Download or read book South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation written by James J. Hentz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation, James J. Hentz addresses changes in South Africa's strategies for regional cooperation and economic development since its transition from apartheid to democracy. Hentz focuses on why the new South African government continues to make regional cooperation a priority and what methods this dominant state uses to pursue its neighborly goals. While providing a synthetic overview of the history of regional cooperation in southern Africa, Hentz considers the logic of cooperation more generally. An extensive discussion of South African politics provides the context for Hentz's exploration of the more widely felt effects of domestic change. Readers interested in the international organization of the politics and economy of southern Africa will find thought-provoking material in this important book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an examination of the diplomatic and economic regional power structures in Africa and their relationships with each other, Dawn Nagar discusses the potential and future of pan-Africanism. The three primary regional economic communities (RECs) that are recognised by the African Union as the key building blocks of a united Africa are examined - these are the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). These RECS include Africa's major economies – Egypt, South Africa, and Kenya but are also home to Africa's most conflict prone and volatile states – the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia and Lesotho. Providing a detailed overview of the current relationship between these power blocs, this book provides insight into the current state of diplomatic and economic relations within Africa and shows how far there is to go for a future of Pan-Africanism.
