Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of an Award of Merit in the Christianity Today Book Awards, History/Biography category On January 17, 1776, one week after Thomas Paine published his incendiary pamphlet Common Sense, Connecticut minister Samuel Sherwood preached an equally patriotic sermon. God Almighty, with all the powers of heaven, are on our side, Sherwood said, voicing a sacred justification for war that Americans would invoke repeatedly throughout the struggle for independence. In Sacred Scripture, Sacred War, James Byrd offers the first comprehensive analysis of how American revolutionaries defended their patriotic convictions through scripture. Byrd shows that the Bible was a key text of the American Revolution. Indeed, many colonists saw the Bible as primarily a book about war. They viewed God as not merely sanctioning violence but actively participating in combat, playing a decisive role on the battlefield. When war came, preachers and patriots alike turned to scripture not only for solace but for exhortations to fight. Such scripture helped amateur soldiers overcome their natural aversion to killing, conferred on those who died for the Revolution the halo of martyrdom, and gave Americans a sense of the divine providence of their cause. Many histories of the Revolution have noted the connection between religion and war, but Sacred Scripture, Sacred War is the first to provide a detailed analysis of specific biblical texts and how they were used, especially in making the patriotic case for war. Combing through more than 500 wartime sources, which include more than 17,000 biblical citations, Byrd shows precisely how the Bible shaped American war, and how war in turn shaped Americans' view of the Bible. Brilliantly researched and cogently argued, Sacred Scripture, Sacred War sheds new light on the American Revolution.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking collection of sacred Christian writings of American origin from Mormons, Shakers, Christian Scientists, and others. "Scripture" is any work in which the authors, translators, editors, or discoverers all claim to have received wisdom from a source outside themselves, be it revelation, enlightened philosophy, or ancient archive. For the first time in a single volume, American Scriptures gathers fifteen of these texts from religious movements with origins in the United States. Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp's concise single volume will enlighten not only readers interested in the historical and religious aspects of the scriptural texts, but also those whose interest has been piqued by such bestsellers as Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Book excerpt: This is the second of four volumes of Sacred Verses. The entire work is an approximate modern adaptation of Dantes Divine Comedy. In the first volume a young man suffers a great loss in his life and in addition, the loss of innocence and certitude that is characteristic of youth. This leads him to seek meaning in the world and in his life, first by exploration of the nature of the physical world. In this volume he will travel through the philosophy of the centuries and the universe of ideas. In volumes three and four (yet to come) he will explore the entire history of the spiritual world. In each of these journeys he will have a mentor (for Dante these were Virgil and Beatrice). In this volume the mentors are Will and Ariel Durant, historians of human civilization. In this and future volumes the young man ages as he seeks (and eventually finds) a resolution of his quest. This second part, being concerned with the world of ideas, lies between the first (or physical) universe (equivalent to Dantes Inferno) and the final quest for spiritual understanding (equal to Dantes Paradisio). Therefore this volume may be considered comparable to the Purgatorio of Dante.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth and concluding volume of the quartet of SACRED VERSES. The entire work is an approximate modern adaptation of Dante's DIVINE COMEDY. In the PROLOGUE, a young man suffers a great loss in his life, and in addition, the loss of innocence and certitude that are characteristic of youth. This leads him to seek the meaning of the world and of his life. In Parts I, II, and III he explores the physical world, the philosophy or human thought throughout the centuries (the universe of ideas), and finally the spiritual meaning of life, as revealed by many scientists, philosophers and prophets. In each of these endeavors, he has a mentor (for Dante these were Virgil and Beatrice). In this, the final quest, it is Mother Teresa, who has said, "In the End, we all are One." Throughout these journeys, the young man ages and matures as he seeks (and eventually finds) a resolution of his quest. At the beginning and at the end of his search, he is counseled by the great Greek playwright, Sophocles. Eventually in the Epilogue, he is reunited with his loss and achieves a final resolution of his search and his journey.

Book excerpt: The objective of “The Sacred Scriptures” by John Biermanski, 29th edition - “Special Edition,” also written in German, is to revoke all falsifications in today's Bibles known so far (the New Testament), and to restore the original state of the verses as far as possible. In the present work, you will find the holy and true name of the living Elohim/G-d “YAHWEH” (the Elohim/G-d of Abraham, the Elohim/G-d of Isaac and the Elohim/G-d of Jacob), of the children of Israel (Exodus 3:15), to his glory in this edition, and “The New Covenant ~ The New Testament”, “The Book of Psalms” and “The Book of Daniel”, in which all verses are written in German and English with “Appendix” in English (see the “Table of Contents”). In this part is: "THE BOOK OF REVELATION" and also the very important "APPENDIX" for example "Note about Daniel, Chapter 7, Verses 21-28" and the work of the English Reformers, etc. The author was born in 1963 in North Rhine-Westphalia and completed a traineeship for wholesale and foreign trade in a pharmaceutical wholesale company. In the course of his professional development, he used to be a freelancer but was also officially employed; he has experienced a lot rises and falls throughout his life. While studying the Scriptures, he was led by the Spirit of the only God, the Almighty and the only Holy Father in heaven, whereas, by grace, he could recognize many things that are now presented as heresies to the world. In recent years he has been active in the proclamation of the Word of God in Europe, particularly in Brazil (South America), and has enlightened many people by his message, so that they get to know the true God, His holy name and His will and only obey Him - and start to think about all this, i. e. "so that they finally decide themselves in favour of the living God, instead of against Him, and their names are not erased from the divine 'Book of Life' forever."

Book excerpt: Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, written by Paul from prison in the middle of the first century, were addressed to specific Christian communities facing concrete challenges. What did these letters mean at the time, and what do they mean for us today? In this addition to the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, seasoned New Testament scholar Dennis Hamm explores the significance of these letters and their enduring relevance to the life and mission of the church. Based on solid scholarship yet readily accessible, the book is enriched with pastoral reflections and applications and includes sidebars on the living tradition and biblical background.

Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
