Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Poems of the Nineteenth Century As in my other collection, I could not in this volume have included SO many choice poems, if I had not been favoured by the permission Of Authors and Publishers to make extracts from their Copyright works, and the reader will perceive by the beauty of these extracts, how deeply I am indebted to them for this permission, which has given an excellence to the collection, which it otherwise could not have had. The book must be regarded as containing only cabinet specimens Of the writings of the difierent authors, for a fuller enjoyment of which I would refer the reader to their published works. Trusting it may go out as an angel of light, and accomplish an everlasting good in the way of teaching good morals, and fill the mind of its many readers with good thoughts. The deepest devotion in David's soul expressed its self in measured strains poetical, and "The Psalms" perpetuate his wisdom and devotion. Dr. Watts still lives in the pathos of his songs of love and grace. Poetry opens a wide field for the expressions of the soul, and he who has the gift of poesy need not fear to enter. These songs are flames of truth and love from a soul filled with holy zeal. May they kindle a sacred flame in other hearts For truth is light ad light is love, Come down to earth from heaven above. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sacred Poetry: Of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries A remembrance of our Worthies is not unneedful; the grey fathers of learning and imagination recede every day further from the eye. Science has a phrase - acoustic Shadow - which is significant and suggestive. In a great city you may hear the chime of bells in one street, and lose it in the next; the buildings bury the sound Application of the comparison is easy: our times do not favour the diffusion of solemn, thoughtful strains; frequent obstacles come between the music and the hearers. The chime is broken by the objects that intercept it. The old is scattered by the new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Poetry Mom of the following poems, as well as others which I have written but not here reprinted, have been long before the public, and many of them extensively circulated in selections of sacred poetry, both in this country and in America, but in a collected form they have for years been out of print. Believing that it is important for a writer to learn to blot, I have shortened some of them from what they were in the former editions, corrected others, and some which have been before printed I have altogether suppressed. There is much in the following pages fitted to promote and refine such a taste, and that they may essentially contribute to so desirable a result is the earnest hope of the editor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sacred Poetry of the Olden Time Little needs to be said as to the principles on which these Selections from the Sacred Feeley off/1.1: Olden Time are made. Most of the passages are placed here for their intrinsic merit. Their insertion requires neither explanation nor apology. The presence of a few, however, is due rather to the position and character of the writer than to the value of his poetry. A volume which aims to illustrate the religious literature of two centuries by means of extracts from its poetry, cannot consist exclusively of gems - as well might we attempt to delineate the physical aspects of a country by depicting only its high lands, leaving unnoticed its valleys and plains. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry occupied a complex position in the social life of nineteenth-century America. While some readers found in poems a resource for aesthetic pleasure and the enjoyment of linguistic complexity, many others turned to poems for spiritual and psychic wellbeing, adapted popular musical settings of poems to spread scandal and satire, or used poems as a medium for asserting personal and family memories as well as local and national affiliations. Poetry was not only read but memorized and quoted, rewritten and parodied, collected, anthologized, edited, and exchanged. Michael C. Cohen here explores the multiplicity of imaginative relationships forged between poems and those who made use of them from the post-Revolutionary era to the turn of the twentieth century. Organized along a careful genealogy of ballads in the Atlantic world, The Social Lives of Poems in Nineteenth-Century America demonstrates how the circulation of texts in songs, broadsides, letters, and newsprint as well as in books, anthologies, and critical essays enabled poetry to perform its many different tasks. Considering the media and modes of reading through which people encountered and made sense of poems, Cohen traces the lines of critical interpretations and tracks the emergence and disappearance of poetic genres in American literary culture. Examining well-known works by John Greenleaf Whittier and Walt Whitman as well as popular ballads, minstrel songs, and spirituals, Cohen shows how discourses on poetry served as sites for debates over history, literary culture, citizenship, and racial identity.
