Book excerpt: This volume charts how the national strategic needs of the United States of America and Great Britain created a "parallel but not joint" relationship towards the Far East as the crisis in that region evolved from 1933-39. In short, it is a look at the relationship shared between the two nations with respect to accommodating one another on certain strategic and diplomatic issues so that they could become more confident of one another in any potential showdowns with Japan.

Book excerpt: This study of relations examines the close diplomatic association of Russia and the United States, both close and distant. The book deals particularly with the still vital and very timely question: the control of Manchuria. It describes in detail the struggle between Russia and America, checked and counterchecked by nearly all the other governments of Europe and Asia, for domination of this rich and strategic area. It is safe to say that the full, detailed story of this little-known chapter in our political history is told here for the first time as the author had access to official documents only recently opened to scrutiny by students of foreign affairs. The study begins with a historical sketch of the early friendship between the two countries, but subsequent chapters reveal how this cordiality deteriorated toward the end of the nineteenth century as political and economic interests in the Far East came into open conflict. With the acquisition of the Philippines following the Spanish-American War, America's eyes turned Eastward, and by the conclusion of the Boxer Rebellion her policy of the Open Door in China was firmly established. Under the cloak of this principle, however, American trading, industrial, and railway interests, with the encouragement of our diplomatic agents in the Far East, quickly made a bid for the economic expansion of eastern Asia, at the same time that Russia was attempting to annex Manchuria for herself. When the tinderbox of Far Eastern affairs flared into the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, Roosevelt's policy "balanced antagonism" during the conflict eventually had the result of strengthening Japan and of drawing that country closer to Russia. The outbreak of World War I found these two powers dominating Manchuria, with the United States in spite of its Dollar Diplomacy excluded from the competition. The account is given chiefly through the personalities who took part on both sides in the diplomatic maneuvers. The book is therefore of unusual human interest, as well as an important documentary contribution to an understanding of the present relations of two leading world power.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the strategic history of the past two centuries, showing how those 200 years were shaped and reshaped extensively by war. The book takes a broad view of what was relevant to the causes, courses and consequences of conflict. The volume provides students with a strong grounding in the contribution of war to the development of the modern world, from the pre-industrial era to the age of international terrorism and smart weapons. Covering all the major wars of the past two centuries, the third edition has been revised and updated and now includes: new introductory essays at the start of each section to help students recognize historical turning points and strategic themes; revised and updated material on the post-Cold War period, accommodating new developments and contemporary perspectives; new material on non-Western views on strategy, especially Sun Tzu; a new chapter on ‘The age of acceleration and great power competition’, starting with the death of Bin Laden and ending with the Ukraine crisis; a new Conclusion offering a synthesis between the message of earlier editions and the state of strategy today. This textbook will be essential reading for students of strategic studies, security studies, war studies, International Relations and international history.

Book excerpt: Much attention has been paid to the Japanese deployment of Koreans in their war efforts during WWII. Much less attention, however, has been given to the subject prior to 1910. This book will: 1) present the evidence which reveals the presence of Koreans in the Japanese military during the Russo-Japanese War, 1904–1905, as seen by an American novelist Jack London, before the formal annexation of Korea by Japan; 2) analyze the presence of Koreans on the Japanese and the Russian sides of the war; and 3) investigate why and how these Koreans became involved in someone else’s war. Arirang, a Korean folksong favored and sung by Koreans at home and in exile, has sustained the Korean people in a shared, collective spirit throughout their lives in transnational diasporas in the Russian Far East, Manchuria, and Japan as well as in Korea. This is a study of transnational Koreans as the Arirang people: Chapter 1: Introduction, Chapter 2: Koreans in the Russian Far East and Manchuria, Chapter 3: Koreans in the Russo-Japanese War, 1904–1905, Chapter 4: Korean Transnationals as Stateless People, 1906–1920, and the Conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to American-East Asian relations asks provocative questions and presents a thoughtful appraisal of the situation today. Using a wide range of sources-among them, recently declassified government documents-the authors examine U.S. relations with China, Japan, and Korea. Issues discussed include the"new policy" toward the People's Republic of China (Was there, in fact, a sudden shift in U.S. policy?); the attitudes of the American people and Congress toward the Republic ofChina; the friction between the United States and Japan and the implications of the existing imbalance in trade between the two countries; and the potential for continuing and increasing problems in U.S.-Korean relations. Throughout, the authors present an analysis of past and current conditions as a tool for use in formulating sound, effective policy for the future.
