Book Synopsis Love and Russian Literature by : Ira B. Nadel
Download or read book Love and Russian Literature written by Ira B. Nadel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia haunted the British cultural imagination throughout the 20th century – whether as a romantic source of literary and political inspiration or as a warning of creeping totalitarianism. In this new book, Ira Nadel, charts the story of that influence through the work of some of the key figures in British literature across the century, including Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Jane Harrison, Virginia Woolf, and H.G. Wells. Framed by the story of two romantic encounters, between Walter Benjamin and the actress Asja Lacis in Moscow in 1926 and between Isaiah Berlin and Anna Akhmatova in 1945, Love and Russian Literature casts a vivid new light on the ways in which responses to Russia shaped the history of British modernism.

Book Synopsis Marie, A Story of Russian Love by : Aleksandr Pushkin
Download or read book Marie, A Story of Russian Love written by Aleksandr Pushkin and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Pushkin, the most distinguished poet of Russia, was born at Saint Petersburg, 1799. When only twenty-one years of age he entered the civil service in the department of foreign affairs. Lord Byron’s writings and efforts for Greek independence exercised great influence over Pushkin, whose “Ode to Liberty” cost him his freedom. He was exiled to Bessarabia [A region of Moldova and western Ukraine] from 1820 to 1825, whence he returned at the accession of the new emperor, Nicholas, who made him historiographer of Peter the Great. Pushkin’s friends now looked upon him as a traitor to the cause of liberty. It is not improbable that an enforced residence at the mouth of the Danube somewhat cooled his patriotic enthusiasm. Every Autumn, his favorite season for literary production, he usually passed at his country seat in the province Pekoff. Here from 1825 to 1829 he published “Pultowa,” “Boris Godunoff,” “Eugene Onegin,” and “Ruslaw and Ludmila,” a tale in verse, after the Manner of Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso.” This is considered as the first great poetical work in the Russian language, though the critics of the day attacked it, because it was beyond their grasp; but the public devoured it.

Book Synopsis The Tsar of Love and Techno by : Anthony Marra
Download or read book The Tsar of Love and Techno written by Anthony Marra and published by Hogarth. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena—dazzling, poignant, and lyrical interwoven stories about family, sacrifice, the legacy of war, and the redemptive power of art. This stunning, exquisitely written collection introduces a cast of remarkable characters whose lives intersect in ways both life-affirming and heartbreaking. A 1930s Soviet censor painstakingly corrects offending photographs, deep underneath Leningrad, bewitched by the image of a disgraced prima ballerina. A chorus of women recount their stories and those of their grandmothers, former gulag prisoners who settled their Siberian mining town. Two pairs of brothers share a fierce, protective love. Young men across the former USSR face violence at home and in the military. And great sacrifices are made in the name of an oil landscape unremarkable except for the almost incomprehensibly peaceful past it depicts. In stunning prose, with rich character portraits and a sense of history reverberating into the present, The Tsar of Love and Techno is a captivating work from one of our greatest new talents.

Book Synopsis Russian Love Stories by : Nadezhda L. Peterson
Download or read book Russian Love Stories written by Nadezhda L. Peterson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Love Stories offers a broad range of narrative styles, philosophical agendas, and points of view from writers who insist on making love (be it familial love or between strangers, carnal or platonic, real or imagined) central in the lives of their characters. Although all the authors represented were born in the Soviet period, each was molded by a particular set of shared practices and beliefs, and all offer a distinctive perspective on their experience. The selections are evenly divided between men and women writers and those working in Russia or abroad. This anthology is anchored in the period from the middle of the twentieth century to the present, offering the reader an insider's view of Soviet and post-Soviet life. Yet the writer's position - sometimes from within that time, sometimes from the perspective of a backward glance at the past - is emphatically that of an outsider.

Download or read book Love for Sale written by Colleen Lucey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love for Sale is the first study to examine the ubiquity of commercial sex in Russian literary and artistic production from the nineteenth century through the fin de siècle. Colleen Lucey offers a compelling account of how the figure of the sex worker captivated the public's imagination through depictions in fiction and fine art, bringing to light how imperial Russians grappled with the issue of sexual commerce. Studying a wide range of media—from little-known engravings that circulated in newspapers to works of canonical fiction—Lucey shows how writers and artists used the topic of prostitution both to comment on women's shifting social roles at the end of tsarist rule and to express anxieties about the incursion of capitalist transactions in relations of the heart. Each of the book's chapters focus on a type of commercial sex, looking at how the street walker, brothel worker, demimondaine, kept woman, impoverished bride, and madam traded in sex as a means to acquire capital. Lucey argues that prostitution became a focal point for imperial Russians because it signaled both the promises of modernity and the anxieties associated with Westernization. Love for Sale integrates historical analysis, literary criticism, and feminist theory and conveys how nineteenth-century beliefs about the "fallen woman" drew from medical, judicial, and religious discourse on female sexuality. Lucey invites readers to draw a connection between rhetoric of the nineteenth century and today's debate on sex workers' rights, highlighting recent controversies concerning Russian sex workers to show how imperial discourse is recycled in the twenty-first century.
