Book excerpt: 1 March 2021 This book is intended as a primer with summary specifications for the various armored vehicles in the present-day Russian military. For more complete specifications of these vehicles, I recommend the TRADOC Worldwide Equipment Guide (WEG). Unfortunately, the WEG is only available online, so we downloaded (most) of the information and publish an extract of the Russian vehicles only (including tanks) as a separate title (search "russia ground combat vehicles"). That book is available on Amazon.com. Note that the pictures on the cover are a graphical Table of Contents. The page number is written before the vehicle name. If you have ideas for future titles, let me know and I will see how much info is out there and try and publish suggested titles. This book was released on 2021-01-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: January 2021 This is probably the toughest book I've attempted. Partly due to the lack of open-source information available and partly because of the Covid-19 lockdown. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and publish what I have since there are so few books on the subject out there. This is just the start as there are a lot of vehicles out there and I plan to add the ones I missed. Please let me know which I missed and I will add them. I would like to "crowd source" this book and ask that readers go to our web site (USGOVPUB.com) and send me comments to fill in the information gaps. Rather than writing a negative review, how about sending me the suggested changes and improvements and I then update the text as soon as I get your comments? I plan to upload updates on the last day of the month if I get input. In any event, I will continue to research the missing information myself and make corrections as I find them. Note that the pictures on the cover are a graphical Table of Contents. The page number is written before the vehicle name. Also, I hate to see blank pages, so I placed the cover page for a few suggested titles you may be interested in looking at. If you have ideas for future titles, let me know and I will see how much info is out there and try and publish suggested titles. Thank you for your continued support. 4th Watch publishing is a SDVOSB. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aug 18 2020 Printed in COLOR Electronic Warfare (EW) is considered a relatively inexpensive way to curb an opponent's ability to communicate and exercise control within a battlespace. By now, everyone is aware that the incident where a Su-24 bomber allegedly flew over the American destroyer 'Donald Cook' described in practically all Russian media, during which the Russian aircraft supposedly employed its newest 'Khibiny' system to disable the ship's electronics is RUMINT (RUMINT - RUmor INTelligence [military]). RUMINT can be described as single-source disinformation that obfuscates or "puffs up" an adversary's capabilities. The text in RED thruout the book is RUMINT. Russia's electronic warfare equipment specifications are a closely held SECRET so a lot is missing, but I was able to find quite a bit thru open sources. I will update as I find more. The systems included in this book typically have their own specialization. For example, the Divnomorye complex suppresses locators and other avionics of aircraft, helicopters and drones. The station also creates powerful interference for "flying radars" - E-3 AWACS, E-2 Hawkeye and E-8 JSTAR. It can hide objects within a radius of several hundred kilometers from radar detection. The Murmansk-BN complex suppresses communication and control channels within a radius of up to eight thousand kilometers. This technique is able to strip communications of warships, aircraft, drones and headquarters of the troops of a potential enemy. Electronic warfare systems "Moskva-1", "Krasukha-20" and "Krasukha-4" are often called "aircraft systems." They are designed to deal with aviation radars, as well as communications and information transfer technology. "Moskva-1" detects the enemy, determines the type and characteristics of its electronic warfare. Data is transferred to other systems. Krasukha-20 is responsible for the fight against early warning radar aircraft and "Kraukha-4" interferes with other types of aircraft. Thanks to experiences in conflicts in Georgia, Ukraine and Syria, Russia's EW systems and tactics are evolving. The systems are more mobile, intelligent, and automated with a transition from narrowly specialized equipment to multifunction complexes, for the disruption of many types of electronic systems-radars, radio communications, navigation and others. The tactics are changing as well. For instance, Russian forces in Ukraine have been using small unmanned aircraft with electro-optical cameras and electronic direction finders to specifically locate and then jam counter-battery radars ahead of mortar and other artillery strikes. According to Ukrainian General Kremenetskyi, Russian armed forces have developed their EW doctrines and they have been adept at learning lessons from recent conflicts and adapted their systems accordingly. "The speed with which the Russians have adapted their EW tactics has been very quick." Of course, Russian EW operators (occasionally) also simultaneously jam their own forces' equipment. Book excerpt: The Typhoon K (Тайфун K (Taifun K)) family of mine resistant ambush protected wheeled armoured vehicles began entering service with the ground forces of the Russian Federation in late 2013/early 2014. The Typhoon K series was developed as an integral element of the Russian Federation plans to modernise its armoured vehicle inventory in the period 2010-2020. There are four major variants of the Typhoon K - K-63968 & K-63969 built on a 6x6 chassis and K-53949 & K-4386 built on a 4x4 chassis. All variants can be armed with automatic combat modules, the 4x4 variants being outfitted with more diverse weapons options, ranging from medium/heavy machine guns and 30 mm automatic grenade launchers to 30 mm automatic gun armed uninhabited turrets for the K-4386. The K-53949 and K-4386 have been further developed as fire support vehicles armed with mortar complexes. The K-53949 has also been developed as a dedicated medical module (further developed into two distinct sub-variants) and for engineering (mine carrier) and command posts. The K-4386 has been further developed as the MTP-K tactical reconnaissance platform and as the Typhoon Air-Defence Vehicle for carriage of Igla-S surface to air missiles. This volume adopts a free flowing style rather than the traditional chapter format, due to the interrelated relationship between the variants and weapon systems. The volume sets out to detail the Typhoon K genesis, design and initial entry into service with the ground forces of the Russian Federation. All technical data relating to the respective Typhoon K platforms, weapon systems and components have been furnished by the respective design bureaus, as has much of the imagery/graphics, with additional impute from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Book excerpt: "They Will Have to Die Now is the story of what happened after most Americans stopped paying attention to Iraq…It will take its place among the very best war writing of the past two decades." —George Packer, author of Our Man and The Assassins’ Gate James Verini arrived in Iraq in the summer of 2016 to write about life in the Islamic State. He stayed to cover the jihadis’ last great stand, the Battle of Mosul, not knowing it would go on for nearly a year, nor that it would become, in the words of the Pentagon, "the most significant urban combat since WWII." They Will Have to Die Now takes the reader into the heart of the conflict against the most lethal insurgency of our time. We see unspeakable violence, improbable humanity, and occasional humor. We meet an Iraqi major fighting his way through the city with a bad leg; a general who taunts snipers; an American sergeant who removes his glass eye to unnerve his troops; a pair of Moslawi brothers who welcomed the Islamic State, believing, as so many Moslawis did, that it might improve their shattered lives. Verini also relates the rich history of Iraq, and of Mosul, one of the most beguiling cities in the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated study of both the combat vehicles of Russia's legendary Spetsnaz special forces and the whole range of unique and modified vehicles that Russia's elite units use, from combat snowmobiles to the world's biggest water-cannon. Elite forces need elite vehicles. As Vladimir Putin has devoted effort and funds into modernising Russia's armed forces and turning them into an instrument geared not just for defending the Motherland but also projecting power beyond its borders, Russia has seen a growing emphasis on special and specialist forces. Traditionally, the elite Spetsnaz commandos had to make do with regular vehicles or civilian-based 'technicals', not least to conceal their presence (or, indeed, very existence). Now, increasingly at the forefront of Russian power projection, the Spetsnaz are acquiring more capable, versatile vehicles, such as the paratroopers' BTR-D personnel carrier, and also experimenting with exotic, specialist new acquisitions, such as the Chaborz M-3 buggy and Yamaha Grizzly all-terrain vehicle. The other elite branches of Russia's forces, such as the Arctic-warfare troops of the 200th Independent Motor Rifle Brigade, the paratroopers of the Air Assault Troops (VDV), the Naval Infantry, and the elite units of the security forces are also developing and fielding new vehicles for their specialist roles, from combat snowmobiles to urban-warfare vehicles. From highly-mobile LMVs able to operate in the deserts of Syria or the streets of Ukraine, through dedicated fire-support vehicles such as the air-droppable Sprut-SD or the massive BMPT 'Terminator', to amphibious tanks and drone-equipped security trucks, these are the workhorses of Russia's special forces. This study explores all these combat vehicles in detail, combining expert analysis from Russia expert Mark Galeotti with highly accurate full-colour illustrations and photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable mechanized campaigns of recent years pitted the brutal and heavily armed jihadis of Islamic State against an improvised force belonging to the Kurdish YPG (later the SDF). While some Kurdish vehicles were originally from Syrian Army stocks or captured from ISIS, many others were extraordinary homemade AFVs based on truck or digger mechanicals, or duskas, the Kurds' version of the technical. Before US air power was sent to Syria, these were the Kurds' most powerful and mobile weapons. Co-written by a British volunteer who fought with the Kurds and an academic expert on armoured warfare, this study explains how the Kurds built and used their AFVs in the war against 'Daesh', and identifies as far as possible which vehicles took part in major battles, such as Kobane, Manbij and Raqqa. With detailed new artwork depicting the Kurds' range of armour and many previously unpublished photos, this is an original and fascinating look at modern improvised mechanized warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle is the newest land warfare system in the United States Army and Marine Corps inventory. Designed to meet the challenges of operating in a counterinsurgency environment, the MRAP has taken survivability to a new level. MRAPs are currently manufactured by three companies: BAE Systems, Navistar International Military Group, and Force Protection Inc. Each company manufactures an MRAP according to one of three classifications set by the US Department of Defense: Category I, Category II, or Category III. The Category I MRAPs are designed for urban combat. Category II covers the MRAPs designed for convoy security, medical evacuation, and explosive ordnance disposal. The Category III MRAP performs the same function as Category II but is designed to carry more personnel. Since their introduction in 2007, MRAPs have performed remarkably in the asymmetric warfare environment. Their unique design and survivability characteristics have saved the lives hundreds of soldiers who otherwise would have been lost to landmines or IED attacks. As with any combat system, however, the MRAP is not without its drawbacks.

Book excerpt: Major Hal Skaarup has woven together an informative and detailed synopsis of the carefully preserved and restored armoured fighting vehicles on display in Canada. He highlights the importance of these upon key turning points in history when these AFVs were in use as tools of war at home and overseas. We often associate the evolution of military prowess with the advancement of sophisticated technology. Major Skaarup's descriptions of Canadian armour as it evolved to the level it has today reveals that military planners have had to be continuously creative in adapting to the changes in modern combat. They had to devise many intricate techniques, tactics and procedures to overcome the insurgents and opposition forces faced in Afghanistan and future overseas missions where Canadian armour will be brought into play. This guide book will show the interested reader where to find examples of the historical armour preserved in Canada, and perhaps serve as a window on how Canadas military contribution to safety and security in the world has evolved.
