Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of J. Henry Rushton, a native of northern New York State who became world famous as a builder of canoes. He and his craft were at the center of notable events in canoeing history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rushton was born in 1843 in a small settlement on the edge of the Adirondack wilderness. In his thirties, seeking to cure himself of "consumption" in the mountain air, he built a boat for a trip into the woods. Tradition has it friends asked Rushton to build boats for them, too, and his career was started. Rushton was fortunate in his patrons. In 1880 he was approached by the outdoor writer, George Washington Sears, better known by his pen name 11Nessmuk.'' A frail man, Nessmuk asked Rushton to build him an exceptionally lightweight canoe. Nessmuk's solitary tours of Adirondack waterways in the 10 3⁄4-pound Sairy Gamp set a new trend in sports life. His letters in the journal Forest and Stream did much to popularize unguided travel through the wilderness and to spread Rushton's fame. Many illustrations, including two previously unpublished sketches by Frederic Remington, help tell the story here. Five appendixes include Rushton's catalog descriptions of his construction methods; a reprint of an article by Nessmuk, an account of the Rushton canoes extant today, drawings and specifications of seven of these extant canoes, and a lengthy discussion by Harry Rushton of his father's methods of craftsmanship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edition brings together the known writings in poetry and prose of Edward Rushton (1756--1814). Blinded by trachoma after an outbreak on the slaving ship in which he was a young officer, Rushton returned to Liverpool to scratch a living as a publican, newspaper editor, and finally bookseller and publisher. In his day Rushton was a well-known Liverpool poet and reformer, with an impressively wide range of causes (the Liverpool Blind School, the Liverpool Marine Society, and many radical political groups). Many of his songs, particularly the marine ballads, were very familiar in Britain and America. In the later Victorian period, as a particular version of romanticism began to dominate literary sensibilities, Rushton’s overt politics fell from favour and he became rather obscure, at least by comparison with his like-minded (but much better off) friend William Roscoe. As the history of slavery abolition and other radical causes has come to be re-examined, the bicentenary of Rushton’s death, falling in November 2014, has suggested an opportunity to take a new look at his remarkable career and impressive body of work. There has never been a critical edition of Rushton’s poems. His own 1806 edition omits much, including what is his best-known work in modern times, the anti-slavery West-Indian Eclogues of 1787; the posthumous 1824 edition omits much from the 1806 collection while drawing in other work. The present edition works from the earliest datable sources, in newspapers, chapbooks, periodicals, and broadsides, providing a clean text with significant revisions and variants noted in the commentary. Unfamiliar words are glossed, and brief introductions and contextual commentaries, informed by the latest scholarship, are given for each piece of writing.

Published after Tressell's death from tuberculosis in the Liverpool Royal Infirmary in 1911, the novel follows a house painter's efforts to find work in the fictional English town of Mugsborough (based on the coastal town of Hastings) to stave off the workhouse for himself, his wife and his son.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would our understanding of museums change if we used the Vintage Wireless Museum or the Museum of Witchcraft as examples – rather than the British Museum or the Louvre? Although there are thousands of small, independent, single-subject museums in the UK, Europe and North America, the field of museum studies remains focused almost exclusively on major institutions. In this ground-breaking new book, Fiona Candlin reveals how micromuseums challenge preconceived ideas about what museums are and how they operate. Based on extensive fieldwork and analysis of more than fifty micromuseums, she shows how they offer dramatically different models of curation, interpretation and visitor experience, and how their analysis generates new perspectives on subjects such as display, objects, collections, architecture, and the public sphere. The first-ever book dedicated to the subject, Micromuseology provides a platform for radically rethinking key debates within museum studies. Destined to transform the field, it is essential reading for students and researchers in museum studies, anthropology, material culture studies, and visual culture.
