Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Electrification After the War There are still many untapped or inadequately utilized natural resources in rural areas. There is also need of rural processing industries close to the source of production. And after the war there may again be a seasonal, if not year-round, oversupply of manpower in many rural areas. The welfare of the Nation demands that these rural resources and needs be not neglected. Electricity provides a key to their development. Therefore, the development of every type of suitable rural industry in every electrified rural area should be considered part of a Nation wide rural electrification program. To be of maxi mum service to farm people, such developments should be cooperatively owned and controlled, wherever possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now almost impossible to conceive of life in western Europe, either in the towns or the countryside, without a reliable mains electricity supply. By 1938, two-thirds of rural dwellings had been connected to a centrally generated supply, but the majority of farms in Britain were not linked to the mains until sometime between 1950 and 1970. Given the significance of electricity for modern life, the difficulties of supplying it to isolated communities, and the parallels with current discussions over the provision of high-speed broadband connections, it is surprising that until now there has been little academic discussion of this vast and protracted undertaking. This book fills that gap. It is divided into three parts. The first, on the progress of electrification, explores the timing and extent of electrification in rural England, Wales and Scotland; the second examines the effects of electrification on rural life and the rural landscape; and the third makes comparisons over space and time, looking at electrification in Canada and Sweden and comparing electrification with the current problems of rural broadband.

Download or read book The Welfare Impact of Rural Electrification written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural electrification can have many benefits-not only bringing lighting, but improving the quality of health care, spreading information and supporting productive enterprises. The extent of these benefits has been questioned, arguing that they may be insufficient to justify the investment costs. This book quantifies these benefits. It finds that the benefits can indeed be high, substantially outweighing the costs, and that consumer willingness to pay is generally sufficient to achieve financial sustainability. However, benefits could be increased further by providing smart subsidies to assist connections for poorer households, promote productive uses and further consumer education.
