Chi Marathon is the first book to focus not on building stamina first (though that is covered here) but on how to run all those miles without harming your body. A staggering 80 to 90 percent of marathoners face injuries during their training. This book debunks the myth that marathoners need to push through and beyond pain, and presents a technique-based plan for pain- and injury-free, high-performance half and full marathons. Chi Marathon also shows how to improve your performance by developing your own race-specific training plan tailored to your event, and will help you cross the finish line feeling strong no matter your age, body type, or running ability. -Run a marathon or half marathon free of pain and injury -Transform your racing with the training triad: form, conditioning, and mastery -Tap into your chi, an energy source more powerful and enduring than muscles -Teach your mind and body to work together as a team and master your event This is the book that distance runners have been waiting for. With Chi Marathon you can enjoy the run and feel confident no matter the distance.

Beverly collects the habits and mindsets of more than 50 runners including Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Deena Kastor, Benji Durden, Colleen De Reuck, Dave Dunham, Kathrine Switzer, and Roger Robinson. Run Strong, Stay Hungry shares 9 keys from these veteran racers that let them keep running strong and staying hungry for competition. Are they biomechanically gifted? Stubborn? Simply lucky to have avoided injury? Turns out, there’s a lot more to it. In his comprehensive research, Beverly discovers that these runners all share specific perspectives and habits that allow them to adapt to changing life circumstances, accept declining abilities, and rebound from setbacks. These keys not only keep them on their feet, but also allow them to continue to draw the same enjoyment from the sport whether they are winning championships or finishing in the middle of the pack, cranking out 100-mile weeks and doing blazing speed work on the track, or squeezing in just enough miles into a busy schedule to simply feel fit and fast and occasionally test that fitness in a race. Beverly interviews over 50 runners including Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Deena Kastor, Benji Durden, Colleen De Reuck, Dave Dunham, Kathrine Switzer, and Roger Robinson. From training methods to mental attitudes to finding community among their fellow runners, there are specific keys that help these masters runners to adapt, accept, and rebound from the hurdles that life and aging put in their path. By adopting the practices of these lifetime competitors, you too can enjoy a lifelong, healthy running career as well as boost your enjoyment of running and your racing performance.

Book excerpt: Here is a stunning and provocative guide to the future of international relations—a system for managing global problems beyond the stalemates of business versus government, East versus West, rich versus poor, democracy versus authoritarianism, free markets versus state capitalism. Written by the most esteemed and innovative adventurer-scholar of his generation, Parag Khanna’s How to Run the World posits a chaotic modern era that resembles the Middle Ages, with Asian empires, Western militaries, Middle Eastern sheikhdoms, magnetic city-states, wealthy multinational corporations, elite clans, religious zealots, tribal hordes, and potent media seething in an ever more unpredictable and dangerous storm. But just as that initial “dark age” ended with the Renaissance, Khanna believes that our time can become a great and enlightened age as well—only, though, if we harness our technology and connectedness to forge new networks among governments, businesses, and civic interest groups to tackle the crises of today and avert those of tomorrow. With his trademark energy, intellect, and wit, Khanna reveals how a new “mega-diplomacy” consisting of coalitions among motivated technocrats, influential executives, super-philanthropists, cause-mopolitan activists, and everyday churchgoers can assemble the talent, pool the money, and deploy the resources to make the global economy fairer, rebuild failed states, combat terrorism, promote good governance, deliver food, water, health care, and education to those in need, and prevent environmental collapse. With examples taken from the smartest capital cities, most progressive boardrooms, and frontline NGOs, Khanna shows how mega-diplomacy is more than an ad hoc approach to running a world where no one is in charge—it is the playbook for creating a stable and self-correcting world for future generations. How to Run the World is the cutting-edge manifesto for diplomacy in a borderless world.

Book excerpt: Learn to live with God instead of for God. In this candid and achingly authentic book, Fil Anderson shares the healing insights that restored his spiritual compass and guided him back to God--the God who specializes in filling empty souls. Fil Anderson had accomplished more for God than most of his contemporaries, but his worn-out body housed an empty soul. His frenetic pace of ministry had earned him just one thing: greater pressure to do even more. He had fallen for the soul-killing lie that doing more for God would give his life meaning. Then the godly admonition of a spiritual director set this burned-out believer on a life-saving spiritual path. Sometimes the only way to get a new life is by running your old one completely into the ground. This powerful story of a reawakened soul can be the story of every person who has pursued spiritual productivity over intimacy with God and come up empty. It’s the story of reclaiming your soul and finding a home in the center of God’s relentless love. It’s the journey from self-importance to God-importance. “To the harried and the unharried, I pray that this book will minister to your heart in the profound way that it has blessed mine.” —Brennan Manning

This fear emphasized the fact that even during the best times of life—like a trip to Paris—we need God by our side. In this series of devotions, the reader travels through Paris with the author on her vacation and her journey of faith. Six days are spent exploring some of the city’s lesser known sites in anticipation of meeting up with her daughter for another three days of sightseeing. Together reader and author become familiar with the fascinating history and culture of the city of Paris. Certain moments stand out above all others from the vacation. They are more intense, or more amusing, sometimes more embarrassing, or even more fearful. Kim has written about these moments, developed them around the sights and history of Paris, wrapped them in Scripture turned them into The French Collection.

Book excerpt: Mario Muscella is a fictional character. His lifestyle is taken from many different experiences of the author and many others whom he has encountered over the years. In this story, Mario feels that he has to be accepted by his peers by doing everything that satisfies them even though he usually hates doing those things. Throughout most of his life, he is a follower, although he wants to break loose and become a leader. Mario is a child from the beginning, who never really grows up. He just gets older, weaker, and beaten down by the many pitfalls of his sorry life. He is a second generation Italian American growing up in an ethnic neighborhood in South Philadelphia. He has some success along the way, and at times, he accumulates some wealth and good fortune. Those components only seem to last for a few brief moments. Each time, he gets hit over the head with a large mallet, which brings him back to reality. He decides to go far away to school, and he finally meets a girl who he seems to love. As soon as he hits the high point of this romance, she does a complete 180 and breaks his heart. He never recovers from that dismal moment, which takes him down another rocky road. He is pushed into an unhappy marriage by his own hand. All during this time, he longs for his lost sweetheart, but he never cheats on his wife. Later on, his wife decides to betray him. None of this ends very well. His story is about cheating, heartaches, murder, crime, and other misfortunes that seem to plague him wherever he goes. He never seems to catch a break even when he works his tail off. He gets slammed in Eau Claire, Washington, DC, and back at home. Mario seems to be snake-bitten. Mario hits rock bottom. He runs away, but he can never run away from himself. He gets another chance with his lost love, but he gets hit with another surprise. He is always on the doorstep of some type of calamity. Mario is about to throw in the towel when something mysterious happens. He finds out that his luck is godsend. His life is about to change forever. He also may have found a new love that will also last forever.
