Book excerpt: Enthusiastic Hiker and Trail Runner Jerry has participated in trail running events for more than twenty years across the United States, Canada and Southeast Asia. He has a passion for trail running, approaching nature and exploring the world's mountains, forests and fields. He has journeyed from Hawaiian volcanoes to the American Rocky Mountains; from Canadian mountains to the jungles of Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian countries. He also led students from the Hawaii Pacific State University Mountaineering Society in volcanic and mountain in-depth trail running activities. Appreciating the beauty and majesty of nature and inviting my friends to explore it with me gave me the greatest sense of achievement. "The beauty of nature is like the sun in the mountains; because you can't absorb all the sun on your own, so share it with everyone!" Mother Nature is always there waiting for you. As long as you are willing to return to the mother's arms, she will provide endless positive energy. Why do I like climbing? 1. To get to know myself better, 2. To see the beauty of heaven and earth, 3. To meet friends who love nature and extend the spirit of adventure challenges to all corners of the world. This book mainly addresses my first-hand experience of exploring the mountains and waters of eight countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, through independent travel, trail exploration, national Hash trail running, foreign mountaineering trail competitions, as well as promoting and organizing Crazy Beer Trail running activities. I hope to introduce more friends to hiking, promote international cultural sports exchange and finally share the experience of years of trail nd mountain running. I draw on inner strength, experiencing the challenges of nature, to achieve the best balance of mind and body. Running from the inside out!!!

Book excerpt: Learn from the Engagement Masters Education is a battle for attention. Whether you are a teacher trying to reach a classroom full of students or a parent trying to prepare your child for the world to come, getting our audience to just listen can be a real challenge. When students have access to personalized entertainment sitting in their pockets, anything that doesn't jump out and grab their attention right away is easily drowned out. But there is a place where even today all those modern distractions melt away--Disneyland. When you're there, you're not only in a different world, you're in Walt Disney's world. Whether you are Peter Pan flying over London in Fantasyland or a rebel fighter struggling against the First Order in Galaxy's Edge, you are 100% engaged. Sights, sounds and even smells ensure that your brain is locked into the experience. If we can bring those techniques into our teaching, we can create engaging experiences for our students, grab their attention, and boost their learning. You'll improve your teaching and create a place students want to visit. In this book we'll learn from the world's greatest engagement masters--the Disney Imagineers. Through narrative visits to attractions throughout Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, you'll experience a visit to the park as we share memories and see how the Imagineers make it all work. We'll be guided by Imagineering icon Marty Sklar's Mickey's 10 Commandments of Theme Park Design as we turn our classrooms into the most engaging places on Earth!

For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Book excerpt: "Every Pixar movie is connected. I explain how and possibly why." These are the words that began the detailed essay now known as "The Pixar Theory," which came out way back in 2013. It collected over 10 million views on Jon's blog alone, and was syndicated on Buzzfeed, Mashable, Huffpost, Entertainment Weekly, and more - generating over 100 million impressions and now translated into a dozen languages. Now, these thoughts and ideas first written by Jon Negroni have been fully realized inside this book, aptly named The Pixar Theory. In this book, you'll find an analysis of every single Pixar movie to date and how it tells a hidden story lurking behind these classic movies. You'll learn about how the toys of Toy Story secretly owe their existence to the events of The Incredibles. You'll learn about what truly happened to the civilization of cars from Cars before the events of WALL-E. And of course, you'll find out the possible truth for why "Boo" of Monsters Inc. is the most important Pixar character yet. Welcome to the Pixar Theory. Don't forget to fasten your imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a right way to study how the brain works? Following the empiricist's tradition, the most common approach involves the study of neural reactions to stimuli presented by an experimenter. This 'outside-in' method fueled a generation of brain research and now must confront hidden assumptions about causation and concepts that may not hold neatly for systems that act and react. György Buzsáki's The Brain from Inside Out examines why the outside-in framework for understanding brain function has become stagnant and points to new directions for understanding neural function. Building upon the success of 2011's Rhythms of the Brain, Professor Buzsáki presents the brain as a foretelling device that interacts with its environment through action and the examination of action's consequence. Consider that our brains are initially filled with nonsense patterns, all of which are gibberish until grounded by action-based interactions. By matching these nonsense "words" to the outcomes of action, they acquire meaning. Once its circuits are "calibrated" by action and experience, the brain can disengage from its sensors and actuators, and examine "what happens if" scenarios by peeking into its own computation, a process that we refer to as cognition. The Brain from Inside Out explains why our brain is not an information-absorbing coding device, as it is often portrayed, but a venture-seeking explorer constantly controlling the body to test hypotheses. Our brain does not process information: it creates it.

Book excerpt: My unstructured upbringing, and cares to the wind attitude, led to my frequent incarceration, from childhood to adulthood, it’s a disturbing story, which is primarily aimed at the adult reading audience, who enjoy reading about reality situations and crime. I have always been a reader, and to a large extent, that helped me become a self taught person. Born on the banks of the Colorado River in Arizona, and raised up in the Marcos De Niza barrio projects in South Phoenix, I experienced the injustices of the cotton fields, Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Home, and Arizona State Industrial School at Fort Grant, Arizona. I wandered the desperate streets of Los Angeles, and the forlorn railroad tracks, alone, like a lost person without a purpose in life. I was locked up in the jails of Phoenix, and Los Angeles, before winding up in the California State penitentiary system. Upon my release, I struggled to stay out of the pen, and took the jobs that society at large would never want to take. Through numerous personal tragedies, incarcerations, and unfortunate circumstances, I lost control of my life. No one was ever able to change my destructive behavior. The changes when they occurred came from within me, when I could no longer cope, with the situations I had cast my self into. Looking back, I can now see what I couldn’t see, during those hopeless time periods. I was very fortunate, to finally be able to leave that life behind me, through relationships that believed in me, and successfully worked, and built myself a civil service work career, from which I retired. I now spend my days enjoying life’s simple pleasures, after all my previous tragic missteps. My objective in life now, is to become an accomplished writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last decade, China and India have grown at an amazing rate—particularly considering the greatest downturn in the U.S. and Europe since the Great Depression. As a result, both countries are forecast to have larger economies than the U.S. or EU in the years ahead. Still, in the last year, signs of a slowdown have hit these two giants. Which way will these giants go? And how will that affect the global economy? Any Western corporation, investor, or entrepreneur serious about competing internationally must understand what makes them tick. Unfortunately, many in the West still look at the two Asian giants as monoliths, closely controlled mainly by their national governments. Inside Out, India and China makes clear how and why this notion is outdated. William Antholis—a former White House and State Department official, and the managing director at Brookings—spent five months in India and China, travelling to over 20 states and provinces in both countries. He explored the enormously diversity in business, governance, and culture of these nations, temporarily relocating his entire family to Asia. His travels, research, and interviews with key stakeholders make the unmistakable point that these nations are not the immobile, centrally directed economies and structures of the past. More and more, key policy decisions in India and China are formulated and implemented by local governments—states, provinces, and fast-growing cities. Both economies have promoted entrepreneurship, both by private sector and also local government officials. Some strategies work. Others are fatally flawed. Antholis’s detailed narratives of local innovation in governance and business—as well as local failures—prove the point that simply maintaining a presence in Beijing and New Delhi – or even Shanghai and Mumbai —is not enough to ensure success in China or India, just as one cannot expect to succeed in America simply by setting up in Washington or New York. Each nation is as large, vibrant, innovative, diverse, and increasingly decentralized as are the United States, Europe and all of Latin America … combined. China and India each have their own agricultural heartlands, high-tech corridors, resource-rich areas, and powerhouse manufacturing regions. They also have major economic, social, environmental challenges facing them. But few people outside these countries can name those places, or have a mental map of how the local parts of these countries are shaping their global futures. Organizations, businesses, and other governments that do not recognize and plan for this evolution may miss that the most important changes in these emerging giants are coming from the inside out. “This book is for people who wonder about the inside of China and India, and how different local perspectives inside those countries shape actions outside their borders. Though my family and I spent five months traveling in both countries to do research, this book is not a travelogue. Rather, it is an attempt to sketch how a few of China’s and India’s many component parts are being shaped by global forces—and in turn are shaping those forces—and what that means for Americans and Europeans conducting diplomacy and doing business there.”—from the Introduction
