Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume examines experiences of contemporary Latvian migrants, thereby focusing on reasons for emigration, processes of integration in their host countries, and – in the case of return migration - re-integration in their home country. In the context of European migration, the book describes the case of Latvia, which is interesting due to the multiple waves of excessive emigration, continuously high migration potential among European Union member states, and diverse migrant characteristics. It provides a fascinating insight into the social and psychological aspects linked to migration in a comparative context. The data in this volume is rich in providing individual level perspectives of contemporary Latvian migrants by addressing issues such as emigrants’ economic, social and cultural inclusion in the host country, ties with the home country and culture, interaction with public authorities both in the host and home country, political views, and perspectives on the permanent settlement in migration or return. Through topics such as assimilation of children, relationships between emigrants representing different emigration waves, the complex identities and attachments of minority emigrants, and the role of culture and media in identity formation and presentation, this book addresses topics that any contemporary emigrant community is faced with.

This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates how the United Nations, governments, and aid agencies mobilise and instrumentalise migration policies and programmes through a discourse of safe migration. Since the early 2000s, numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs), UN agencies, and governments have warmed to the concept of safe migration, often within a context of anti-trafficking interventions. Yet, both the policy-enthusiasm for safety, as well as how safe migration comes into being through policies and programs remain unexplored. Based on seven years of ethnographic fieldwork in the Mekong region, this is the first book that traces the emergence of safe migration, why certain aid actors gravitate towards the concept, as well as how safe migration policies and programmes unfold through aid agencies and government bodies. The book argues that safe migration is best understood as brokered safety. Although safe migration policy interventions attempt to formalize pre-emptive and protective measures to enhance labour migrants’ well-being, the book shows through vivid ethnographic details how formal migration assistance in itself depends on – and produces – informal asnd mediated practices. The book offers unprecedented insights into what safe migration policies look like in practice. It is an innovate contribution to contemporary theorizing of contemporary forms of migration governance and will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and human geographers working within the fields of Migration studies, Development Studies, as well as Southeast Asian and Global Studies. Book excerpt: Although our sample size was small and may not truly represent the population using the F.M.R.C., the results show that males from 35 to 44 years of age, who have been in Australia from 10 to 15 years are the most frequent users of the service. Our study also confirmed the findings of the Galbally Report, that the greatest needs of migrants are for information and practical assistance.

Book excerpt: Migration: Policies, Practices, Activism brings together a range of scholarly research papers to examine the place of international migration in the modern world, starting with the overview of migration and development by Alejandro Portes. There are many aspects to migration today which are treated in this collection, including new patterns of migration flows, asylum and the handling of refugees, multiculturalism, religious and cultural diversity, identity formation among immigrant communities, and the impact of migration upon social and economic development. Chapters in this book look at a variety of migration case studies, including aspects of international migration in Europe; movement from sub-Saharan Africa northwards; movement from Albania to Italy; a comparison of the USA and Germany; the entry of international brides to South Korea; and the concept of diversity and its use in the study of the outcomes of migration. This is a stimulating collection which looks at many facets of the phenomenon. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.
