Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "Contraceptives are unique for their ability to stir up trouble between men and women, old and young, and members of different national identities. As yet, however, there has been no nuanced account of the waves of change triggered by 'modern' contraception in multiple domains of African social life. This book fills that gap, broadeiing our understanding of gender, generation, power, and resistance. Many Africans reacted hostilely to the colonial introduction of the pill and the Depo-Provery injection, seeing such technologies as part of the white colonial efforts to assert both control over African women's bodies and undercut patriarchal authority over fertility and childbearing. Simultaneously, some African women welcomed these technologies as ways to increase their own bodily autonomy from husbands and in-laws. The ambiguity of these technologies (Were they means of oppression or emancipation? Did they herald 'modernity' or immorality?) generated controversies within marriages, families, and the mascent Zimbabwean nation."
