Book excerpt: Conner Jerod loves his father but cannot think of him without shame. Josiah has just served eighteen months for sheep-stealing in 1890s Nevada. Conner's best friend, Dorsel, insists Josiah is innocent, but Conner still remembers his father telling him innocent men do not get sent to prison. He finds it hard to look at the pallid man getting off the train after his parole, let alone forgive him. This is especially so since, for months, he has meekly endured the taunts of Derek Gray, son of the man whose testimony convicted his father. Then, some things start happening that cause him to question the righteousness of his father's conviction. For starters, Hatch Morgan, Dorsel's alcoholic father, has a meeting with the Grays, then turns up knifed and near death. At the doctor's office, Hatch tells Dorsel his attacker was trying to stop him from disclosing evidence he found in the Emerald Mountains that proves Josiah did not steal the sheep. Convinced the Grays are involved and that the sheriff will not stand up to them, Conner and Dorsel set off on their own to find Hatch's evidence. What they find tests their courage and nearly costs their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years 1934 and 1935 I made a close study of O. Henry’s Texas contacts. The newspapers of Texas during the time of O. Henry’s residence in the state furnished one of the sources which I investigated; and it was during my research in the files of the Houston Post, 1895–1896, that I discovered the stories and illustrations which make up this book. In reprinting this material, I have followed the original version meticulously except for the correction of obvious typographical errors and certain slight aberrations in punctuation that seemed to demand revision for the sake of consistency or to comply with modern standards of usage. Even so, I have allowed many typographical and even grammatical conventions to remain as they were printed forty years ago. The companion volume to O. Henry Encore, namely, O. Henry in Texas, embodies the results of my investigation into the Texas period of O. Henry’s life, and contains a much more complete account of his work on the Houston Post than I have been able to give in the short introduction to the present volume. Permission for reprinting the material here was arranged for me by former Governor W. P. Hobby of Texas, now President of the Houston Post, and Mr. A. E. Clarkson, Business Manager of the Post. I am happy to express my gratitude to them. My thanks are due also to Dr. Leonidas Warren Payne, Jr., of The University of Texas, Dr. Vernon Loggins, of Columbia University, and the late Dr. Dorothy Scarborough, of Columbia University, for helping in the identification of the material. He often used to do original research for his books and settings. Excerpt: "So John Mackenzie had put his foot upon the road. This after he had reasoned it out as a mathematical problem, considering it as a matter of quantities alone. There was nothing in school-teaching at sixty dollars a month when men who had to carry a rubber stamp to sign their names to their checks were making fortunes all around him in sheep. That was the way it looked to John Mackenzie the morning he set out for Poison Creek to hunt up Tim Sullivan and strike him for a job. Against the conventions of the country, he had struck out on foot. That also had been reasoned out in a cool and calculative way. A sheepherder had no use for a horse, in the first place. Secondly and finally, the money a horse would represent would buy at least twelve head of ewes. With questioning eyes upon him when he left Jasper, and contemptuous eyes upon him when he met riders in his dusty journey, John Mackenzie had pushed on, his pack on his back..."

Book excerpt: Brown’s Hole was like no other outlaw hideout in the Wild West! It earned its reputation as the “Worst Hellhole in the West” the easy way: It was the safe haven for the notorious Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch during their heyday. As the cornerstone for the infamous “Outlaw Trail,” the Hole had no equal, yet honest ranchers like Beemis Markham and his two orphaned nieces proved they could co-exist with Cassidy and the murderous cattlemen’s detective, Tom Horn (with his “system that never fails”), if they were willing to pay the price. Josie and Ann Barnett grew up, loved and lost in an epic about the two prettiest, most eligible women the Hole ever had. Two terrific love stories are wrapped around Cassidy and Horn’s time in the Hole along with a great inside look at how the Outlaw Trail operated. Brown’s Hole is the only place where the Wild West stayed young!

Book excerpt: Claim Number One is a western novel by George W. Ogden. Ogden was a prolific author of western novels. He often used to do original research for his books and settings. Excerpt: "Coming to Comanche, you stopped, for Comanche was the end of the world. Unless, of course, you were one of those who wished to push the boundary-line of the world farther, to make homes in the wilderness where there had been no homes, to plant green fields in the desert where none had been before. In that case you merely paused at Comanche, like the railroad, to wait the turn of events. Beyond Comanche was the river, and beyond the river, dim-lined in the west, the mountains. Between the river and the mountains lay the reservation from which the government had pushed the Indians, and which it had cut into parcels to be drawn by lot."
