Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title ‘THUMBS-UP FOR RUMA,’ is one of the most popular kindle titles. It's a tragedy, pitches upon the life a young lively girl who attracts us with her artless musings and innocent charm. Though it’s a heart-wrenching narrative, a tragedy to gnaw at the heart yet, the title stands justified to be toned in positive. It could very well be attributed to the eternal sprightly, playful and sober child who brings life to one’s memories of childhood. The title is also relevant in one more sense that which the girl lived through, faced straight the unseemly troubles, her courage and choices mark her above an ordinary child. At the centre of the novel is Ruma, a cheerful, little bubbly girl, though with a torn soul to steer through with a terrific cast of other characters chiefly, Nirupalli, a loving, considerate nurse who had been searching her, since they parted away. At first blush, the story seems to be a fount of humour and chugs along smoothly, it’s when Nirupalli and Ruma meet each other and remain at the loggerheads. Ruma is an epitome of childish innocence and playfulness, plays down the serious and calm attitude of the nurse leaving her defeated and embittered. Through a well-knit conspiracy of her twin elder brothers, in possession of great wealth and power, she is forcefully rushed to a far-off place of which she hardly bears a hint and captivated in a dark, lone room, from where she makes a successful escape with the aid of a by-passer, a random man. In the other link of the same chain, the nurse-maid who had been made to treat Ruma while she was ill, is late and lamenting to discover that she caught a deadly infection that anyway could have passed through her into little child’s, causing perhaps her death if not treated medically for that very rare condition. She accidentally chances upon to overhear the ill-designs of the sinister twins, and secretly hurries back, now direly firm and decided to find the girl and help her destiny. A kind manager, Mrs Ranga who curiously is Nirupalli’s friend helps her flee with Amit, the gardener’s son to his village, in case she should be suspected by the police and face the trial if the truth comes up. Nirupalli, who stays with her during her pursuit to find Ruma, is caught unawares about the possible fact that her friend and Ruma are in direct touch but comes to discover it only after it’s extremely late. And the prudence caused her greater sadness when she visits the village where Ruma was supposed to be with the gardener’s son and finds her no longer living. Towards the end of the story, one can figure that the hope being crushed when Ruma dies out in the flames of a merciless, untamed fire-break out. Well, that’s for the debate and undecided reality because some people held it too that Ruma saved her life and again the evidence that no one saw her burning first-hand even the remains of the ashes were not revealing. Ruma after escaping the place of captivity seeks shelter in a big mansion that belongs to a renowned Bengali family who was kind enough to have her. As luck would have it, the child steadily but sadly morphed into a servant to them. She had not spent many peaceful days when another debacle fell in her way, changing her course of life for always. Ruma by fault and accident, happened to kill an intruder who jumped off the boundary in dark, and rushed towards her, she found nothing less than a poker around to defend herself. Just while she was turning round of herself, the intruder thrust into the long, unkind neck of the poker, dripping with hot blood. Mr and Mrs Ranga tone down the nail-biting tension in the air around though all the narrative. The prime mover of the villainy receives a justified end with the younger brother killing the older one, following a heated argument, and landing himself up in jail.

Book excerpt: The unique story of a small community of escaped slaves who revolted against the British government yet still managed to maneuver and survive against all odds After being exiled from their native Jamaica in 1795, the Trelawney Town Maroons endured in Nova Scotia and then in Sierra Leone. In this gripping narrative, Ruma Chopra demonstrates how the unlikely survival of this community of escaped slaves reveals the contradictions of slavery and the complexities of the British antislavery era. While some Europeans sought to enlist the Maroons' help in securing the institution of slavery and others viewed them as junior partners in the global fight to abolish it, the Maroons deftly negotiated their position to avoid subjugation and take advantage of their limited opportunities. Drawing on a vast array of primary source material, Chopra traces their journey and eventual transformation into refugees, empire builders--and sometimes even slave catchers and slave owners. Chopra's compelling tale, encompassing three distinct regions of the British Atlantic, will be read by scholars across a range of fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most people think of Mother Teresa, they think of a saint—a spiritual hero of extraordinary humanitarian accomplishments, a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But Mother Teresa was also the leader of one of the world’s largest and most successful organizations: the Missionaries of Charity. Since founding it in 1948 she has raised millions of dollars and, with over a million volunteers in more than 100 countries, it remains one of the most recognized brands in the world. How did one nun who never received any formal education in business build such an impressive global organization? Frank, realistic, and firmly grounded in practicality, Mother Teresa’s leadership style helped to inspire and organize people across the world. This book shares ten essential leadership principles drawn from Mother Teresa’s example and applies them to today’s business world. Authors Ruma Bose, an entrepreneur who volun- teered with Mother Teresa, and Lou Faust, a leading business expert, are the first to examine her in this light—as a leader whose management style and dedication to a singular vision led to one of the world’s most unlikely success stories. Mother Teresa may have been a saint, but her spectacular success was not a product of divine providence. Her genius was the simplicity of her vision and her dedication to its implementation. It was in the way she treated her people, refusing to distance herself from the everyday work of a typical sister of the Missionaries of Charity. It was in how she handled tough choices—like accepting donations from brutal Haitian dictator François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. These were the principles that made her the great leader of a global organization, and they can be applied by anyone in any organization—no sainthood required.

Download or read book Choosing Sides written by Ruma Chopra and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though scores of texts, films and stories have been told about the American Revolution from the perspectives of our Founding Fathers and their followers, comparatively little is known about those colonists who resisted the revolutionary movement, and tried desperately to preserve their nation’s ties to the British Empire. Choosing Sides: Loyalists in Revolutionary America shows us that America’s original colonies were not nearly as united behind the concept of forming free, independent states as our society’s collective memory would have us believe. There were, in fact, numerous colonists, slaves, and Native Americans who counted themselves among the Loyalists: those who never wanted to sever ties with the English crown and who viewed revolution as an unnatural and unlawful mistake. Too often overlooked, these men and women made valid and valuable arguments against the formation of the United States—both weighing the costs of revolution and the perilousness of existing without the Empire’s command— arguments that even hundreds of years into America’s existence were echoed and championed both within and beyond our borders. Colonists from commoners to clergymen had nuanced and complex reasons for wanting to remain under British control, and an awareness of these reasons and their origins paints a more historically accurate portrait of the American populous around the time of our country’s founding. This volume not only showcases Dr. Chopra’s comprehensive analysis of Loyalism and its arguments, but includes letters, legislation and even poems written by Loyalists during and after the Revolutionary War. Choosing Sides lays a detailed foundation of facts for its readers and provides them entry points to the debate surrounding the genesis of the United States. It is both a primary source and a touchstone for original interpretations and discussions.

Book Synopsis Unnatural Rebellion by : Ruma Chopra
Download or read book Unnatural Rebellion written by Ruma Chopra and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2011-05-29 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of British American mainland colonists rejected the War for American Independence. Shunning rebel violence as unnecessary, unlawful, and unnatural, they emphasized the natural ties of blood, kinship, language, and religion that united the colonies to Britain. They hoped that British military strength would crush the minority rebellion and free the colonies to renegotiate their return to the empire. Of course the loyalists were too American to be of one mind. This is a story of how a cross-section of colonists flocked to the British headquarters of New York City to support their ideal of reunion. Despised by the rebels as enemies or as British appendages, New York’s refugees hoped to partner with the British to restore peaceful government in the colonies. The British confounded their expectations by instituting martial law in the city and marginalizing loyalist leaders. Still, the loyal Americans did not surrender their vision but creatively adapted their rhetoric and accommodated military governance to protect their long-standing bond with the mother country. They never imagined that allegiance to Britain would mean a permanent exile from their homes.

Download or read book The Vigil written by Sarah Joseph and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretations of Valmiki's poem about the epic battle between Raman and his nemesis, Ravanan, tend to focus on the glory and virtues of the hero. But in the Malayalam modern classic Oorukaaval - translated here as The Vigil - Sarah Joseph tells a turbulent tale: that of Angadan, who believes that Raman killed his father Vali against all principles of dharma. Unlike the celebrated central characters who are blind to or choose to ignore that which is inconvenient, Angadan is acutely aware of the silent sufferings of the weak and disempowered. Over and over, the tormented young vanara prince sees Raman act against justice and fair play, not the least of which is his consent to Sita's fire ordeal. Ultimately, though, it is the person most wronged by Raman - Sita - who provides him redemption from his searing quest for revenge. In The Vigil, the familiar rhythm of the original poem is stirred up by Angadan's ascetic touch. Sarah Joseph provides a new spin to the grand old story, bringing in contemporary concerns such as the environment, peace and women's empowerment, and provides a new path, a fresh way of understanding it.
