Book excerpt: Presents records of stabilization activities at Lowry Ruin. Although initial excavation was done in the 1930s, no formal ruin stabilization was accomplished until 1966-67. In 1974-75 extensive maintenance stabilization was done, and the deeply buried, painted kiva (Kiva B) was reexcavated, stabilized, and roofed for public access. Available tree-ring dates verify the earliest building activity began in A.D. 1090 for a period of 30 years. A relationship of Lowry Ruin to the northern expansion of Chaco influence in the late 1000's is suggested.
Book Synopsis Sins of the Shovel by : Rachel Morgan
Download or read book Sins of the Shovel written by Rachel Morgan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rachel Morgan's frank and incisive history begins with Richard Wetherill's "discovery" of Mesa Verde in Colorado in 1888. Subsequent expeditions by amateurs, looters, and budding professional archaeologists abetted the devastation of Indigenous sites throughout the Southwest. These expeditions became the proving grounds for different conceptions of what archaeology should be and how it should be practiced. Ultimately, revulsion at the work of nineteenth-century explorers led to more rigorous and ethical norms, as well as federal regulation, but the core issues of how we ought best to engage with the evidence and people of the past remain live ones today. Morgan, an archaeologist, knows well the field's history of racism and unethical behavior, and she is both unsparing and even-handed in assessing what happened in the Southwest and how it informs relations among people-and with the planet-today"--

Book Synopsis The Conservation of Decorated Surfaces on Earthen Architecture by : Leslie Rainer
Download or read book The Conservation of Decorated Surfaces on Earthen Architecture written by Leslie Rainer and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, people of all cultures have decorated the surfaces of their domestic, religious, and public buildings. Earthen architecture in particular has been, and continues to be, a common ground for surface decoration such as paintings, sculpted bas-relief, and ornamental plasterwork. This volume explores the complex issues associated with preserving these surfaces. Case studies from Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas are presented. The publication is the result of a colloquium held in 2004 at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, co-organized by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) and the National Park Service (NPS). The meeting brought together fifty-five conservators, cultural resource managers, materials scientists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, anthropologists, and artists from eleven countries. Divided into four themes--Archaeological Sites, Museum Practice, Historic Buildings, and Living Traditions--the papers examine the conservation of decorated surfaces on earthen architecture within these different contexts.
